From the President
Dear Alumni & Friends,
In his book Good to Great, Jim Collins illustrates why some
institutions stay content with mediocrity and never move to a
higher level of productivity or excellence. Collins also illustrates
ways in which successful companies continue to rise above the
rest and adapt to changes and challenges. As I write my 12th
Annual Report letter, it is clear that our school has embraced
Collins’ model of greatness.
Most of you are aware of the many schools which were slated
to close this past year. All of us were made aware of the many
challenges facing Catholic education in our city by the Blue
Ribbon Commission’s Report. Amidst all of the crises and
challenges, our school continued to do what we have done for
the last 12 years which is to improve in all areas: academically,
financially, enrollment management, and technology; and our
campus continues to grow with more programs and facilities.
Our Board of Advisors and my staff understood at the beginning of this year that we needed to set
our goals high. During the 2011-2012 school year we saw the completion of our new Construction
Sciences Center, our new Robotics Center, and the new Ramp Playground - featuring the Krajewski
Baseball Field and Clark Family Multi-Purpose Field. We also saw the ongoing improvements in
technology where all of our classrooms now have Smart Boards.
With all of the above mentioned improvements totaling more than $5 million dollars, we again
gave more financial aid to our students than any other school in the Archdiocese. Last year 72% of
our students received financial aid. This is simply amazing considering the state of our economy.
Our greatness lies in what we are about, and who we are. You, our Alumni and Friends, are an
integral part of our greatness. The names in this book are the reason we continue to educate, build
and prosper. Together we have illustrated what makes a school great. I believe we get the core
elements of our greatness from our patron saint, St. Francis de Sales. With your commitment and
generosity, Father Judge is not just a good school, we are a great school!
Our plans and goals for the 2012-2013 school year are even more challenging than last year. We
hope to see a 35% increase again in giving. This year Charlie Huckel’s annual Crusader Campaign
saw a huge increase in first-time donors and once again saw over a 35% increase from last year’s
dollar total. Along with Drexel University, we are beginning the process of building our new
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (S.T.E.M.) Center. We also want to increase funding
to our Education Committee and increase funding for technology improvements. Also, we want
to increase donations to grants, scholarships and the Educational Tax Credit Program. Last year I
initiated two new groups, the Leadership Group of Father Judge and the Young Leaders of Father Judge.
These two groups are comprised of CEOs, CFOs and Presidents of companies. Together with our
Board and subcommittees this new blood will be committed to helping us reach new heights in all
facets of our school’s progress.
We also want to begin upgrading our theater and auditorium. With the help of our Track Team,
“Catholic League Champs,” and track alumni, we want to upgrade our track. If you can help
us meet our goals and challenges for the 2012-2013 school year, please give us a call. I want to
personally thank my Board, Charlie Huckel, Brian King and my staff for helping us become great!
I thank you all for your sacrifices, belief in our vision, your generosity and support. I invite all of you
to come back to Judge during our Homecoming Weekend to see what you did to make our school
great. May the Spirit of our Patron, St. Francis de Sales continue to be with you and your family.
In Salesian Spirit & Crusader Pride,
Rev. Joseph Campellone, O.S.F.S.
“As long as we live we will have passions . . . . It is precisely in the struggle with these
passions and emotions that our victory and triumph lies.”
ith the successful completion of the Field Complex
Renovations at Ramp Playground, the Friends of Father
Judge High School (FOFJHS) and Father Judge,
President Rev. Joseph Campellone, OSFS continue
to take the school to new heights. Entering his 13th
year as school President, Fr.Campellone in conjunction
with his Board of Advisors and the FOFJHS have
pushed the envelope harder than any other school in
the diocese. By reinvesting in the school infrastructure,
upgrading technology and expanding upon
educational offerings, Father Judge is truly a private
education at a diocesan price tag that rivals any other
school in the Philadelphia Region. The list of accomplishments
below was achieved under Fr Campellone’s
current tenure:
William F. Mitchell Student Activity Center &
McGonigal Fitness & Weight Room – built 2004, this
$1.3 million, 16,000 sq.ft. building is a state-of-theart
complex where students attend Gym and Health
Class, weight training for both teams and individuals,
play numerous sports on the multi-purpose gym
floor, conduct hitting and pitching practice inside netted
locations, and hold numerous school functions.
Two Shuttle Vans for Student Activities – purchased
in 2005, these vans have saved countless
hours and money for transporting our students to
activities and athletic events.
Brisson Center – built in 2008, this newly converted
portion of the 2nd floor serves as a resource for
students with various learning challenges.
Capital Improvements to school in ’08, ’09, ’10 including
– new bleachers in the Fox Gym, new lighting
in the Fox Gym, new plumbing fixtures and electric
service for the Chemistry and Biology Labs.
Library Computer Lab – renovated
in 2009, the FJ Library
and Computer Lab allows our
students the ability to not only
search the stacks for information,
but access the web, work
on group projects, and take
learning to the next level.
Addition of Construction
Sciences to the Curriculum –
Also added in the summer of
2010, this class teaches students
the basics of carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and
concrete work. In addition, the FOFJ also paid for
a new room to be built to house this class as well as
the purchase of new tools and equipment necessary
to facilitate this class.
Addition of Wrestling to Athletics & Construction
of a new Wrestling Room – Added in the summer
of 2010, this new program, coupled with a new
work–out room consisting of 12 individual matted
areas for matches and training has already enabled
us to instantly compete.
“We need to concentrate on the now,” stated Fr.
Campellone in a recent Board Meeting, “We need to
continually look in the mirror and ensure that the
“The Friends”
Creating A
Campus
Judge product is not only
top notch, but that it is effectively
preparing our boys
for the world of tomorrow,
where they will be looked
upon to make an impact in
society as Salesian Gentlemen, as well as leaders in
our ever changing global economy.”
That approach of building , investing, and strategic
planning has transformed Father Judge High
School from a building into a campus environment,
where day and night continuous activity can be seen
and enjoyed by students, parents, siblings, guardians,
and the Judge Community.
Campellone has surrounded himself with others
who share his passion for Judge including alums: Fr.
James Dalton OSFS ’62, Principal, Charlie “Huck”
Huckel ’66, Tom Coyle ’87, Director of Admissions,
and Brian Patrick King ’97, all who work hand in
hand on a daily basis with the Office of the President
to ensure that the quality of education is top notch,
the classrooms are full of students, and that the financial
resources are there to make these undertakings
a reality.
I wake up every morning with the understanding
that my mission as President is to continue the “Tradition
of Success” that so many alumni and Friends
of Father Judge have built and I hope my impact on
this school has both an immediate and long term effect
for decades to come.
2011-2012 Report 3
n June 22, 2010, I began my first
day at Father Judge High School
as the Director of Advancement,
and at the end of the day, Father
Campellone gave me a red folder
marked RAMP. He told me to review
the information inside and we would
discuss it in the morning, and the rest
is history. On November 23, 2011 we
held the Ground Breaking Ceremony,
and it was there that I learned that God
was a fan of sports and Father Judge
High School as we were blessed with
a rare winter, that was both warm and
dry, and allowed for construction to
continue uninterrupted to the spring.
On May 22, 2012 we held the Grand
Opening Ceremony and Councilwoman
Joan L. Krajewski cut the ribbon to
re-open the Field Complex at Ramp
Playground and with it, we ushered
in a new era in Father Judge athletics.
I am proud to tell you that this job was
completed using 100% union labor. It
was completed on time, and within the
allotted budget of $2.8 million. This
Ramp fields completed
by Brian P. King, Director of Advancement
project created jobs, breathed new life
into our coaches and student athletes,
and created a campus environment
for the students and families of Father
Judge.
This first-of-its-kind public/private
partnership between the City of Philadelphia
and the Friends of Father Judge
HS, Inc., converted the former Dust
Bowl into a Pro-Bowl facility for baseball,
lacrosse, rugby, soccer and football.
The new Ramp Field Complex
boasts two synthetic Sprinturf Fields.
The Krajewski Family Baseball Field is
an AAA Style Ballpark, complete with
dugouts, bullpens, an on-deck circle,
and bleachers. The home run wall
measures 310 ft. to the corners and 380
ft. at center field. The scoreboard donated
by Pat McGonigal ’81 finishes off
the state of the art field.
The second field at the Ramp Complex,
dedicated as the Clark Family
Multi-Purpose Field, will see a tremendous
amount of action as it hosts
games and practices for soccer, foot-
ball, rugby, and lacrosse. The field is
lined to host all (4) sports and the end
zones are equipped with a GoalPak
System to allow for quick inter-change
of the football and soccer goals/nets.
To enlarge the field size a retaining
wall was added to the Crispin Street
side of the property along with safety
nets on both sides of the field to ensure
balls remain on the property and out of
the street. Eight sets of bleachers allow
both students and parents the opportunity
to watch games. Bill St. Clair ’75,
Chairman of the Friends of Father Judge
HS, Inc., donated the scoreboard for
this field.
In addition to the synthetic turf
fields, the site was upgraded with a
Musco Lighting System. This one of a
kind American made lighting system
is computer based, eco-friendly, and
comes with a 25 year warranty. From
an iPad, SmartPhone, or via a 1-800
#, the coaching staff and DOPR staff
will be able to control the system on
a per light, and per field, basis, sav-
ing thousands of dollars each year.
When I spoke at the Grand Opening
I expressed one simple point, “Judge
guys get things done and this project
is just another example!” There is not
one facet of this project that was not
handled by a Judge guy. The marketing
materials were designed and produced
by Cooke Publishing/ Louis
Guarrieri ’71; O’Donnell & Naccarato/
Peter Naccarato ’60, oversaw the Planning
and Engineering phases; Seravalli
Inc./Charles Seravalli ’66, completed
the construction and the renovations.
The City partnership, which was the
most critical aspect of the entire project,
was negotiated between The Friends,
Chris Creelman ’86, Chief of Staff for
Councilwoman Krajewski, and Leo
Dignam ’77, Deputy Commissioner for
the city Department of Parks and Recreation.
The Friends Building, and Finance
Committees deserve a great deal of
credit for this accomplishment. The
Building Committee is comprised of
Joe Ashdale ’74, Seamus Boyle ’61,
and Peter Naccarato ’60. The Finance
Committee is comprised of John Krol
’73, Patrick McGonigal ’81, Thomas
McGowan ’70, and Bill St. Clair ’75.
Throughout the process these guys
were always just a phone call away to
handle questions, concerns, guidance,
and direction for this project. Additional
credit goes to Father Campellone
and Development Committee members
Kevin Kilkenny ’70, Lou Guarrieri
’71, Frank McGarvey ’77, and Charlie
Huckel ’66 who coordinated fundraising
to complete the project.
Leadership and financial support
began with former football great, Mike
McCloskey ‘79, chairing the campaign.
The energy continued at a special reception
for donors, hosted by Dan Fitzpatrick
’81, at Citizens Bank Park, and
then many former athletes, graduates
and friends, saw this project through
from beginning to end. The Friends
chairman, Bill St. Clair ’75, provided
both, as he pushed this project from
dream to reality, and contributed a
leadership gift to show how important
it was to him and to the school. Former
quarterback standout, Eddie Clark ’78,
Board member Patrick McGonigal ’81,
The Greg Hennigar ’02 Foundation,
and Mark Dignam ’78 Foundation, all
provided substantial gifts for the field
renovations. Yet, there is little doubt
that our biggest supporter on this project
was FJHS Hall of Fame member,
City Councilwoman Joan L. Krajewski
(emeritus). Without her financial commitment,
and passion for all things
Judge, this project would never have
gotten off the ground.
Along with the substantial contributions
from those mentioned, many
graduates and friends answered our
appeals. They responded at special receptions,
face-to-face requests, direct
mail to former athletes, and website/
email blasts to all grads. You can see
their names on page 31.
4 Father Judge High School 2011-2012 Report 5
2012 was an emotional rollercoaster
for the Father Judge Cheerleaders. In
January, it was announced that St. Hubert
was closing. This left the cheerleaders
unsure of their team’s future
status. Four weeks later, the girls were
off to Orlando, FL to compete in the
National HS Cheerleading Championship.
There were thirty four teams
in the Large Varsity Division and
there were three rounds of competition.
Father Judge placed first in their
preliminary bracket which allowed
them to bypass the semi-final round.
The final round of competition took
place in the HP Field House at Disney’s
Wide World of Sports complex.
The cheerleaders hit a good routine
but were unsure of how they would
place because they made a mistake in
the stunt sequence. When it was time
for the award ceremony everyone was
extremely nervous. They announced
all of the thirteen finalist teams and
when they said that Centennial HS
from Tennessee was the runner up,
the Judge girls knew they had just
won Nationals. It was an unforgettable
moment for the cheerleaders,
coaches, and parents.
The good news continued as the
cheerleaders came back to Philadelphia.
Ten days after winning Nationals,
they found out that their school
was going to stay open. The Judge
girls celebrated with an ESPN viewing
party at Chickie’s and Pete’s for
the team, parents, and former cheer-
ed Mooney, founder of the event, with
Father Dalton, principal, and Pat hasher,
president of the Student Council.
leaders. The cheerleaders were invited
to Harrisburg by State Representative
Mike McGeehan ’79 where they were
presented with an award on the floor
of general assembly and received a
tour of the Capitol. Councilman Bobby
Henon invited the girls to City Hall in
May and their victory was recognized
at a City Council meeting.
The cheerleaders and coaches were
thrilled to see all of their hard work
pay off. The team practices three
nights per week at Judge and then
attends gymnastics lessons one day
per week. They also attend a four day
camp in the Poconos each year where
they learn the latest skills and compete
with other nationally ranked teams.
The season lasts for ten months and
Leukemia Lock-in
the girls must be in excellent shape
in order to perform elite stunting and
tumbling skills. In addition to cheering
at the football and basketball games,
the cheerleaders compete in several
local competitions to help them prepare
for Nationals. They usually end
their season with the All Catholic competition.
This year the competition
was held at Archbishop Ryan and the
Father Judge girls placed 1st in their
division. The JV team had a successful
year placing seventh at Nationals and
first at All Catholic.
The Judge cheerleaders are grateful
for their supportive parents including
eleven Judge alumni fathers. The girls
are looking forward to football season
and can’t wait to cheer on the Crusaders.
March 8-9, 2012 marked the 40th anniversary of the Father Judge Annual Leukemia
Marathon. For the first time in over a decade the marathon included an overnight
lock-in component. The event kicked off at 3 p.m. on March 8, with a three-onthree
competition which raised $250. The event was seen on news stations, such as
FOX and CBS, with FOX 29 being at Father Judge all day long. They covered all of the
action, from the event’s time line and noble causes to the games themselves.
Also making an appearance at the marathon was the Philly
Phanatic, spreading cheer and joy to everyone in attendance with his
antics and jovial attitude. Honored last Thursday at the marathon
with the position of Honorary Chairperson of the Committee for the
Basketball Marathon was Mr. Ed Mooney, a man who has been part
of the Leukemia Marathon since its inception forty years ago. The
40th Annual Leukemia Marathon was a great success, raising over
$12,000 in total for Leukemia research.
2012 hall of fame induction
We thought that it couldn’t get better…
but, it did.
Father Judge High School inducted the
Hall of Fame Class of 2012 on Thursday,
May 10, 2012. This was a special year, one
in which we applauded businessmen and
educators, coaches and athletes, an Oblate
Priest, and even a North Catholic grad –
seven new members in all. The honorees
spanned four decades of graduation years,
and with them, we now have 106 members
in this prestigious group.
The evening began with cocktails, Hors
d’oeuvres, and welcoming conversation at
the Vie Ballroom on North Broad Street.
Although the location had changed, our
host had not. Joe Volpe, class of 1987, and
owner of Cescaphe’s as well, welcomed us
at his new venue. It was dressed out spectacularly,
with Father Judge logos and colors
complementing his own decorations.
You could recognize the new members
instantly by their corsages, and you could
identify their family members as the ones
with beaming smiles of pride. Anthony A.
Addario, class of 1964, had come in from
California, edward A. Clark, class of 1978,
traveled from Texas, and rev. thomas J.
Anthony A. Addario was admitted
to the Hall in the Humanitarian category.
His work as Chairman of the Board/CEO
of the Addario Lung Cancer Medical Institute
has brought recognition and acclaim
to Father Judge High School. Tony
has long supported Father Judge causes
while residing on the West Coast. He is
a Senior Support Engineer and member
of several NASA programs. He served as
Sergeant and “Aircraft Control and Warning
Electronics Specialist” while in the US
Air Force. Just a few years ago, Tony and
his wife hosted a reception at the Union
League, to orient the Judge family to the
lung cancer effects to non-smokers.
eddie Clark was inducted to the Hall
in the Athletic category. Ed is one of five
brothers to attend Father Judge, and he
was an All-Catholic quarterback in 1978.
After high school he continued to play
football and was quarterback at Texas
Christian University. Higher education in
the field prepared Ed to become Owner/
CEO of Professional Turf Products, the distributorship
for The Toro Company that
serves the south central United States.
Bill Connors, Sr. was inducted to the
Hall in the Service to FJ Athletics category.
Bill’s full time career was as a journeyman
for Ironworkers, Local 401. He retired after
43 years, but overlapping that career, Bill
coached the Judge Varsity Hockey team
for 28 years. He led teams to many championships,
including the Flyers Cup Championship,
pitting statewide teams in competition.
Many former players and friends
were on hand to congratulate Bill.
Chris Creelman was inducted to the
Hall in the Public Service category. While
active on committees and the Advisory
Board at Judge, he was also involved in
community relations as assistant to former
Councilwoman Joan Krajewski. Chris
worked tirelessly and effectively on behalf
of the school during the negotiations and
management of the RAMP field improvements.
His singular involvement, and
protective oversight to everything Father
Judge during those renovations, secured
new and improved competition and practice
facilities for our athletes. He successfully
transitioned our requests and needs
to new Councilman, Bobby Henon. Chris
already had a reputation for getting things
done, having served the Major Artery
rev. tom hagan, OSFS was inducted
to the Hall in the Religion category. Father
Tom is a legend amongst the Oblates. He
has served as Director of Human Relations
for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia; and
served as Chaplain at University of Pennsylvania,
Lafayette College, and Princ-
digs, but, with his assignment to Haiti,
he founded an organization called Hands
Together, which is a Catholic Mission outreach
that helps the poorest of the poor
people of Haiti. Good thing that dinner
was over, because the powerful video that
showed the poverty of that country, along
with the impact that Father Tom has had
on the Haitian people, brought tears (and
checkbooks) instantly. Everyone in the audience
was grateful and impressed by the
herculean efforts of this diminutive priest,
and proud to call him one of our own. He
followed the video with remarks about the
generosity of Father Judge grads, and the
prayers that he counts on from us. It was
truly a special moment.
George hanlon, neChS, was inducted
to the Hall in the Education category. It’s not
the first time, and it won’t be the last time
that our selection committee will recognize
a non-grad for service and accomplishments
that honor our school. George was
a faculty member, educator, mentor, and
former department chair for forty years.
Although a North grad, George quickly
became a student favorite, for his knowl-
10
edge of his subjects and for his happy and
friendly personality. It wasn’t just forty
years that we recognized, George was
chosen “Teacher of the Year from the Pennsylvania
Council on Economics in 1988,
and served the City of Philadelphia for
eighteen years in the Department of Recreation.
His service to others brought pride
to our school for almost four decades.
John Krol was inducted to the Hall,
and presented the Crusader Award, highest
honor that the school bestows. John’s
remarks were like a sales presentation.
Although he respectfully thanked his
wife and family for their inspiration and
support, he quickly went on to extol the
accomplishments, and the needs for improving
Father Judge High School. John
serves on the Advisory Board, and chairs
the Finance Committee. He is treasurer of
the Friends of Father Judge High School,
Inc., and all the meetings and titles that go
along with these pale in comparison to his
pride and compassion for Father Judge.
John noted that all graduates benefit today
by a strong and successful Father Judge,
and that their generosity and participation
motivate him to continue to volunteer his
12
business acumen and time. As partner at
Legacy Advisors LLC, he applies his management
skills for our benefit. He complements
his work for FJHS with services to
Aid for Friends, and NHS Human Services.
The energy during his remarks was
infectious, and it was easy to see that he
deserved the school’s highest honor.
The evening was complete when Kevin
Kilkenny offered final remarks. Kevin paid
the obligatory respects to contributors and
volunteers, and closed the evening with
congratulations to the honorees and their
families.
From the Principal
Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year.
Being away from Philadelphia for thirteen years, I missed
the construction of the “Irish Memorial” in Penn’s Landing
at the corner of Front and Chestnut Streets. I came
upon it by chance in mid-July. One does not need to be of
Irish descent to be impressed with it. Before reading the
descriptive plaques, one is drawn to the hull of a ship and
passengers coming ashore. A quick walk around the monument
brings one to a scene of starvation and misery. The
transition from ship to country side captures the journey
taken out of desperation. It illustrates the flow of many immigrants
of varying nationalities coming to Philadelphia
to begin the struggle for a new life. The whole scene is far
from the elegant Irish step dancers of the St. Patrick’s Day
Parade and the food courts of non-Irish cultural gatherings.
To preserve their faith, one immigrant group after the other built and maintained the
Catholic Schools. America became a melting pot and subsequent Catholic Schools were
filled with children from the various ethnic strains. The faith was handed on to one
generation to another generation in the crucible of Catholic Schools. Father Judge High
School has inherited the rich tradition built by the many groups, who disembarked on
the shores of the eastern seaboard: Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore. Each
diocese is proud of its own school system and the support of its people. Perhaps, we take
our Catholic Schools for granted, thinking they would always be there for us and our
children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The threats of a poor economy, demographic
decline and the movement away from urban centers have caused the student
population to decline. The schools remain, however, for the same reason they were built,
namely to pass on the faith to the next generation.
In Why Stay Catholic (Loyola Press, 2011), Michael Leach writes to “cradle” Catholics,
“recovering” Catholics, weary Catholics, ex-Catholics and non-Catholics. His purpose
“is to bring the smile back to Catholicism, the kind that comes from deep in your heart,
and to remind you of the embrace, the one you don’t always see but is closer to you than
breathing and nearer than hands and feet.” Indeed, this is a noble goal. In Part 3, he tells
us that people and places “reveal the presence of God,” then begins to list them chapter
by chapter. Before too long, he identifies Catholic Schools as one of those places filled
with people of belief. He mentions specific schools and school systems, for it is only in
the specific that we can understand the general. Our schools are mission driven; it is in
this way that we can preserve our Catholic Identity. To be taken seriously, we aspire to
be academically excellent and inclusive of all ethnic backgrounds. We would have it no
other way. Sacraments are celebrated and religion classes are held to cement our beliefs.
Codes of Conduct are written to make the forming of character possible, and to promote
order. Indeed, these are the characteristics of our schools.
We start another school year by asking God’s blessing being aware of the sacrifices and
achievements of those who have gone before us. We look to the future, because the past
is our heritage. God Bless.
The mission of the Edward A. Peters Memorial Scholarship is to recognize a
high school sophomore who exhibits outstanding behavior in his academic, athletic,
faith and community life.
OriGin
The Memorial Scholarship was established in 2012 by the family of Edward
A. Peters, Sr. and by a generous donation from the Drumcliff Foundation and
more specifically, Daniel F. Gordon. The purpose is to honor the memory of our
Father, Husband, Uncle and Friend.
ABOut eDWArD A. PeterS
Edward A. Peters, Sr. was a proud graduate of St. John Neumann High
School in 1957. He was married to Moira Maloney for over 30 years and had
five children. His three sons were in the Father Judge graduating classes of ’82,
’88 & ’93 and his daughters graduated from St. Hubert’s in 1983 and 1986.
Edward believed in the strong teachings of St. Francis De Sales which are
exhibited throughout Father Judge on a daily basis. He felt that being dedicated
to hard work, being able to get back up when you stumble, aiming higher if
you should fall short of an accomplishment, always finishing what you started,
never quitting, and being proud of all that you’ve accomplished -- were all
part of building your character during your formidable high school years and
would prepare you for life beyond your days at Father Judge.
the SChOlArShiP
This scholarship is for the student-athlete who demonstrates the characteristics
that our Father and Mother instilled in us at a very young age -- strong faith, dedication
to hard work and commitment to family -- will lead you in the right direction.
MEMORIAL DAY
Mike Dufner, class of 1970, and his wife Denise once again hosted a Memorial
Day service at their Ocean City, NJ home this year. This fifth event at the
shore saw more than a hundred graduates, family members and friends listen
to prayers and “taps”, along with short biographical remarks about “Our 27”
who died in the Viet Nam War. Mike kindly invited Bill Crean of Cardinal
Dougherty HS to lay a wreath in memory beside the Father Judge wreath, to
honor their own 27 who died in the same war.
science center
For several years, the Board has been
discussing building a Science Center.
Father Campellone has requested for an
engineering study to be completed for
the building and placement of such a
center. The goals of the center would be
to engage the students in Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics
(STEM) utilizing state of the art interactive
tools. The school currently has
partnerships with National AeroSpace
Training And Research Center (NAS-
TAR) and the Drexel University School
of Biomedical Engineering, Science and
Health Systems. These partnerships
provide a 2 week summer enrichment
program as well as tutoring throughout
the school year provided by the Drexel
weServe Program. Our goal moving
forward is to be known as the premier
school for Engineering & Science in the
Philadelphia Region.
This year, the funding generated
from the 6th Annual President’s Challenge
to the school campus, and to fund the academic programs that complement the traditional curriculum.
“The Friends” endeavor to fulfill the operational requests of the the school President and Administration,
and rely on the President’s Advisory Board for careful evaluations and recommendations for action. “The
Friends” proudly identify the following achievements in support of Father Judge High School:
the basics of carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and concrete
Each fall the FJ Office of the President
in conjunction with the Office of Develop-
ment & Advancement hosts the Taste of
Northeast Philly. This event is one of the
biggest events of the year with over 700
people in attendance.
Local shops, taverns, bars, pubs, grills,
and bakeries participate in the event providing
samples of signature dishes on their
menus. This is a great way for local businesses
to promote their facility as well as
network with other local establishments.
This year attendees where entertained on
stage with performances by SIR ROD and
the sounds of DJ Brian Rickus ‘08. Special
Thanks to all those businesses who donated
gift certificates, sports apparel, local
professional sports tickets, wine & spirits,
and gift baskets used for our Chinese Auction.
A key component for the success of
the event was the help of alum Chris Klos
‘97, a sales representative from Muller Inc.
Chris was instrumental in having Miller
Lite support the event, and through his
assistance the event received discounted
beer pricing, items for the Chinese Auction,
cups, portable bars, and assistance with
refrigeration and draft systems.
Special Thanks to all those who helped
make this night a great success especially:
Kevin Kilkenny, Charlie Huckel, Cathy
Jelencovich, Linda Vivino, Mike Bannon,
Jerry Kelly, The Fathers Association, FJ
Mother’s Association, Mrs. Sheryl Perzel,
Mrs. Marie Smith, Maintenance Staff, FJ
Faculty, and Student Council Members.
This year Huck-N-Duck moved their outing
to Philmont Country Club but Mother
Nature still managed to rain on their parade.
She forced the golf outing to be cancelled
due to rain until the following Monday,
April 30, 2012 when over 160 golfers
who participated in the Huck-N-Duck were
greeted with sunshine and blue skies and
played a round of golf on both the North
& South Course of Philmont Country Club.
Each year the Office of Development &
Advancement led by the inseparable duo
of Charlie “Huck” Huckel & Jim “Duck”
McDonald, put together this great event
to raise money for the Crusader Campaign
and provide tuition assistance to many of
our deserving students.
Recreation, former City Councilwoman
Joan Krajewski and her successor Bobby
a legitimate competitive arena. With new
turf, illuminated scoreboards, lights for
evening play, netting, retaining walls, new
drainage construction, and the obligatory
framework to entertain competition for
football, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, and
rugby, the fields complete our athletic facilities
