Also included in the Mass are offertory chants that reflect the Gallican tradition, using texts in the traditional florid style of Gallican rhetoric. These chants establish Aredius as a saint who was made powerful by his holiness and devotion to the Lord. This is a fitting stance and allegory for St. Yrieix in its transition from a monastery to a chapter of canons, reflecting its newly returned and growing wealth, programs of expansion, and favor with Aredius and the powerful Lords of Limoges. This study of the Aredius Mass has identified and contextualized some of the leading characteristics of the neo-Gregorian elements in Pa903. Given the nearly five- hundred years of monastic tradition at St. Yrieix, it is fitting that the liturgy of this Mass publically reflect the continuing support of saint Aredius and the continued loyalty to him celebrated at St. Yrieix in its transition exclusively to a chapter of canons. The next Section describes the neo-Gregorian Masses from the temporal and the ritual sections of Pa903. D. MASSES FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT AND FOR THE DEAD Two Masses for special days appear in Pa903 with neo-Gregorian chants in all genres of the formularies: the Mass for the second Sunday of Lent, which appears in AMS sources with Gregorian chants, and the neo-Gregorian Mass for the Dead. The formularies for these two Masses are given in Table 5-9, accompanied by the concordances with the Aquitanian graduals for these chants. Additional neo-Gregorian chants from two other Masses for the Dead are also included in the Table. 130
