A. OVERVIEW III. The Usage of St. Yrieix This chapter briefly introduces manuscript Pa903 and focuses primarily on the liturgical usage of St. Yrieix as a principal means of presenting itself in the Limousin community. The description of the manuscript and its provenance (Section B) includes a review of the overall structure of Pa903, compares its hierarchical decorative style to that of the other four eleventh-century Aquitanian graduals, and reviews the literature regarding the provenance of the manuscript. 1 The principal focus of this chapter is the description of the usage of St. Yrieix (Section C), as defined by the selection of feasts and celebrations included in Pa903. The St. Yrieix usage is also compared to that of the other contemporary Aquitanian graduals and to contemporary sacramentaries of the region that underlie the gradual. Finally, Section D discusses the usage of St. Yrieix in the context of its position in eleventh-century Aquitaine. B. PA903 MANUSCRIPT AND PROVENANCE 1. Description Pa903 consists of a gradual that also contains separate sections of antiphons, tropes, prosulas, and prosas. 2 Table 3-1 lists the contents of Pa903 divided into four sections. 3 1 The surviving eleventh-century Aquitanian graduals in addition to Pa903 are Pa776 (St. Michel de Gaillac), Pa780 (Narbonne), Pa1132 (St. Martial of Limoges), and Harley 4951 (Toulouse).
