RUNDOWN II W/ TRULA CHRUCHILL
HORSE: A Streak of Rita “Worm”
FEEDING PROGRAM: Omolene 200, Race Ready, Alfalfa Hay
and grass hay, free choice, Sta-Sound, Platinum CJ
TACK: Old Circle Y Sports Saddle, Gordy Alderson Handmade
Twisted Wire Gag bit
WHAT IS YOUR ROUTINE LEADING UP TO A RODEO RUN? I try to
keep Worm on a consistent routine, he gets fed at the same time
morning and night. I try to feed between 4:30 to 5:30 before most
rodeos. Because he is young I try to get on a little earlier, especially
where it is cool. I let him dictate how much time he needs before
we run, I just go by feel if needs more time I take more time, if he
doesn’t I don’t. I try to be on at least 30-40 minutes before I run. I
like to walk a lot before I lope him to make sure he is all loosened
up. It just depends on the day how much we lope. I just kind of
make sure he is paying attention to me, fl exing both ways and
such. He knows his job, knows when it is his turn, and so at that
point I just try to stay out of his way, help him when he needs it
and leave him alone when he doesn’t.
DO YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC CONDITIONING PROGRAM FOR YOUR
HORSE WHILE YOU ARE ON THE ROAD? I try to ride him
everyday. Somedays that doesn’t work due to the weather or
travel. He is young and in good shape and feels so good so it
is important to keep him ridden each day. I walk, long trot and
lope depending on how frisky he is that specifi c day. I just try
to keep him as mentally level as I can while we are on the road.
Just like an athlete in heavy training, he needs to train some
everyday.
WHAT LEAD YOU TO BECOME A BARREL RACER? It was bred
into me. My grandfather was the 3rd person sign the petitions
the Cowboys’ Turtle Association (the forerunner to the RCA
and later the PRCA). What way of living is better than being
with your horse everyday and traveling around and seeing all
the sites?
IF YOU WERE TO SHARE A TRAINING OR RODEOING TIP, WHAT
WOULD IT BE? Set yourself some goals, make a plan, and go
do what you need to do for yourself. Don’t worry about what
everyone else is doing, take of yourself and your horse and do
what you need to. There are going to be good days and bad
days and take them all in stride. If you have a bad day don’t
beat yourself up just go on to the next day. On the other hand
don’t be to high on yourself after a good day either. It is easy
to see someone else out there working their horse and think
you better work your horse, but maybe your horse doesn’t need
it. Don’t stress over things you don’t need to stress about. You
have done the training, you have done the preparation, have
confi dence in yourself. Go make your run and don’t worry
about what everyone else is doing. My goal is to go make a
nice smooth run each time and not worry about anyone else’s
deal.
