COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER 

AND HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT 

Susan Ford Bales 

Growing up in the public eye did not deter Susan Ford 

Bales from a lifetime of extraordinary public service. 

The daughter of President Gerald R. Ford and 

Mrs. Betty Ford, Bales has tirelessly blazed a path of 

distinguished public service. 

Bales is a Trustee of the Gerald R. Ford Historical Legacy 

Trust and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation. 

Her work with the trust and foundation centers on promotion of the ideals of public service 

and integrity that were the hallmarks of President Ford’s life. She continues her significant 

efforts as the ship's sponsor for the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, which she will 

proudly christen in 2013. 

While living in the White House during her high school years, Bales embraced her 

mother’s candor and courage in speaking publicly about breast cancer. She has continued 

that remarkable legacy toward breast cancer awareness and was recently named global 

ambassador of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. As Trustee of the Elizabeth B. Ford 

Charitable Trust, Bales is an active supporter of the principles and ideals that led her mother 

to found the Betty Ford Center, where Bales served as chair of the center's board from 

2005–2010. Bales also is a board member of the Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental 

Health, Betty Ford Alpine Gardens Foundation, and the Bosque School in New Mexico. 

She attended Mount Vernon College and studied photojournalism. Bales subsequently 

worked as a photographer for the Associated Press and for several magazines and 

newspapers. She is the author of two novels set in the White House, Double Exposure: 

A First Daughter Mystery and its sequel, Sharp Focus. 

She lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with her husband, Vaden Bales. She has two daughters, 

three stepsons, and two grandchildren. 

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT 

Martin E. Marty 

Martin E. Marty is recognized for his rich contributions 

as an author and presenter on religion and culture. 

Marty is a frequent visitor to Grand Valley; in 2003 he 

spoke at a Fall Arts Celebration event. 

Marty is a distinguished professor emeritus at the 

University of Chicago, where he taught for 35 years. 

After his retirement, the university’s Divinity School 

renamed its Institute for the Advanced Study of Religion in his honor. The Martin Marty 

Center is a research center that focuses on public religion. 

An ordained Lutheran pastor, Marty is the author of more than 60 books, including the 

Righteous Empire, for which he won the National Book Award. His most recent book is 

World Christianity: A Global History, published in 2008. 

Marty was president of the American Academy of Religion, the American Society of 

Church History, and the American Catholic Historical Association. He has served on two 

U.S. Presidential Commissions and was director of both the Fundamentalism Project of 

the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Public Religion Project at the 

University of Chicago.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA AWARD 

Maryjean Schenk 

Maryjean Schenk is the vice dean for medical education at the Wayne 

State University School of Medicine. She has spent nearly three decades 

working in medicine and made notable achievements in the areas of family 

medicine and cancer epidemiology research. 

Schenk earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Grand Valley in 

1977. She earned a medical degree from Wayne State University (WSU). 

She joined the WSU School of Medicine faculty in 1991 and also served 

as a research scientist at the Karmanos Cancer Institute. By 1993, she 

had earned a master’s degree in public health and a master’s degree in 

industrial health. 

Schenk held various administrative positions at WSU, including serving as 

inaugural chair of the Department of Family Medicine in 2006 after the 

School of Medicine merged two departments. 

Schenk and her husband have two daughters, one of whom will graduate 

from Grand Valley in December. 

OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR AWARD 

Kathleen Underwood 

Kathleen Underwood serves as director of Grand Valley’s women and 

gender studies program and associate professor of history. She joined 

Grand Valley’s faculty in 1998. 

Many of her former students have called Underwood a mentor and said 

her belief in the importance of engaging learners has greatly impacted 

their professional lives. 

Underwood first taught at the University of Texas in Arlington. While 

there, she served numerous fellowships and led research projects in the 

fields of history and gender studies. She has promoted the importance 

of women in history to national organizations like the Coalition for 

Western Women’s History, National Women’s Studies Association, and 

Western History Association. 

She is a strong advocate for community improvement. Locally, she has 

been appointed to the Grand Rapids Historical Society, West Michigan 

Women’s Studies Council, and the Library Commission for East Grand 

Rapids. As chair for the Citizens of the EGR Community Complex, 

Underwood aided the successful campaign to revitalize the East Grand 

Rapids Library and City Hall, a $8.74 million project. 

Underwood earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado 

and a master’s and a doctoral degree from the University of California at 

Los Angeles.

GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY 

Grand Valley State University was chartered by the Michigan 

Legislature in 1960 in response to the need for a public, four-year 

college in the state’s second largest metropolitan region. Since the 

first year, when there were 226 students and 14 faculty members, 

Grand Valley has become a comprehensive university with more 

than 24,000 students and more than 800 faculty members. 

Grand Valley’s mission is to educate students to shape their lives, 

their professions, and their societies. The university contributes 

to the enrichment of society through excellent teaching, active 

scholarship, and public service. This mission attracts students 

from throughout Michigan, the nation, and many foreign countries 

because of Grand Valley’s commitment to personalized attention 

and research opportunities for students. 

In support of our mission, our liberal education focus emphasizes 

critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and cultural 

understanding, preparing students for life in a fast-changing world. 

Our liberal education also fosters a commitment to economic, social, 

and environmental sustainability and an inclusive campus that 

values diversity. Through this forward-thinking education, students 

are empowered to positively affect the global community now and

The average class size at Grand Valley is 27, which allows for more 

one-on-one interaction between professors and students. Grand 

Valley faculty members love to teach and believe that research 

mentoring is the greatest form of teaching. Through active, engaged 

scholarship in student-directed research projects, they inspire 

students' passion for learning, self-discovery, and incorporating 

academics with professional work. It's a core value that makes 

Grand Valley different — and creates a more personal, interactive, 

and meaningful learning experience for students. Plus, every class 

is taught by faculty members, not teaching assistants, assuring 

first-rate learning opportunities. 

The university offers degrees from its campuses in Allendale, 

Grand Rapids, and Holland, and regional centers in Muskegon 

and Traverse City. Students may choose from more than 200 areas 

of study, including 82 undergraduate programs and 30 graduate 

programs. The campuses offer state-of-the-art facilities, ranging 

from wireless academic buildings to modern living centers for more 

than 5,800 students, as well as performance and athletic facilities. 

The largely residential Allendale Campus is 1,304 acres of 

beautifully wooded grounds. It incorporates a complete college 

experience with numerous student organizations, an array of 

nationally ranked NCAA athletics, and many year-round arts and 

entertainment events. Construction on the new Mary Idema Pew 

Library Learning and Information Commons began in May 2011 

and will be completed in 2013. The innovative building will set 

a new national standard for 21st century learning. It will feature 

approximately 1,500 seats for student study, 20 group study rooms, 

and an automated storage/retrieval system. 

The Robert C. Pew Grand Rapids Campus, which includes 

the L.V. Eberhard Center and Richard M. DeVos Center as well 

as the Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences, Fred M. Keller 

Engineering Laboratories, and John C. Kennedy Hall of Engineering, 

provides an important link to the business, health, and cultural 

community of Michigan’s second largest city. The new L. William 

Seidman building will be completed in 2013 and will support the 

Seidman College of Business’ growing reputation as the premier 

business school in the Midwest. The Pew Campus serves more 

than 10,000 students and focuses primarily on graduate and 

professional studies. Grand Valley’s Meijer Campus in Holland 

gives students the opportunity to take a few classes or earn a 

complete degree. Full registration, advising, and library services 

complement its classrooms and laboratories. Grand Valley offers 

programs at university centers in partnership with colleges in 

Muskegon and Traverse City. In Muskegon, the university’s Lake 

Michigan Center is home to Grand Valley’s Robert B. Annis Water 

Resources Institute. Also located in Muskegon is Grand Valley’s 

Michigan Alternative and Renewable Energy Center — a business 

incubator and research and development center for alternative and 

renewable energy technologies. 

The university provides public services, art, entertainment, sports, 

and cultural programs for the region. Grand Valley’s School of 

Communications, Department of Music, and dance program offer 

regularly scheduled plays and concerts. The university athletic 

teams are consistent leaders in their conference. Grand Valley’s 

commitment to academic technology has been consistently 

recognized among the highest in the nation. Grand Valley is licensed 

to operate the region’s public television and radio stations, which 

are affiliated with PBS and NPR, respectively. The WGVU TV and 

AM and FM radio stations provide local and network broadcasts, 

and offer educational and hands-on instructional opportunities for 

Grand Valley students. 

Grand Valley has an endowment of nearly $75 million, due in 

large part to the support and activity of the Grand Valley University 

Foundation. Gifts to the foundation from friends, alumni, faculty 

members, and staff members help ensure the continuation of 

Grand Valley as a vital public education resource in West Michigan. 

The Grand Valley story is one of continued commitment to a 

high-quality, student-focused learning experience. It is the story 

of students, friends, alumni, faculty members, staff members, 

and donors who have positioned this institution to make a 

meaningful impact to shape the future within the state, the 

nation, and the world.

THE TRADITION OF THE CAP AND GOWN 

The distinctive and colorful gowns worn during academic ceremonies originated in medieval European universities. In the 14th century, their 

use had become so common that universities, including Oxford University in England, required their faculty to wear them in public places. 

Gowns may have been necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings used by medieval scholars, or they may reflect the strong ties that 

existed then between academic and religious institutions. 

In the late 19th century, American universities formed a commission that prepared a code for academic costumes. That code has been 

updated and is used today by most colleges and universities. Academic dress consists of a gown, cap, and hood, which indicate the degree 

held by the wearer and the college or university that awarded that degree. 

Gowns: The gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves and is worn closed in front. It may be black, but is often the color of the 

university. The gown for the master’s degree is typically black and has longer oblong sleeves, with a large section that hangs below the wrist. 

These are still used today to store a variety of useful objects. The doctor’s gown is very full and has large, full sleeves. The front is trimmed in 

velvet, and there are three bars of velvet on each sleeve. The velvet may be black or may be the color of the wearer’s degree. Although the 

standard doctor’s gown is black, many American universities have adopted gowns that have one or more of the school colors. Some of these 

gowns in the academic procession today could be from the University of Michigan (light blue with gold piping), Michigan State University 

(green), Harvard University (red), and Duke University (blue). 

Hoods: Master’s and doctor’s degree holders wear a hood draped over the shoulders and back. Both are trimmed in velvet of a color that 

signifies the wearer’s degree. Some common colors you might see in the procession are: 

• Agriculture – Maize 

• Arts, Letters, Humanities – White 

• Commerce, Accountancy, Business – Drab 

• Dentistry – Lilac 

• Economics – Copper 

• Education – Light Blue 

• Engineering – Orange 

• Fine Arts – Brown 

• Foreign Service – Blue 

• Forestry – Russet 

• Journalism – Crimson 

• Law – Purple 

• Library Science – Lemon 

A holder of the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree wears the dark blue of philosophy no matter what his or her specialty is. 

The satin lining of the hood represents the colors of the college or university that granted the degree. Look for the light blue and white 

of Grand Valley State University, the green and white of Michigan State University, the maize and blue of the University of Michigan, and 

the red and gray of The Ohio State University. 

Caps: Also known as mortarboards, caps complete the academic costume. The standard cap is flat and square with a tassel fastened to 

the center of the stiff top. Bachelor’s and master’s tassels are black or the color of the gown. Doctor’s tassels are shorter and gold. Once 

the bachelor’s degree is conferred, the tassel is worn on the left. In recent years, some American universities have adopted soft velvet caps 

for holders of their doctor’s degrees.

The role of mace bearer is ceremonial, deriving from medieval times in England when officials taking office or opening their courts felt 

the need for protection. Since the 16th century in England, and in America since colonial days, it has been a symbol of office only. 

In commencement ceremonies, it is carried by a distinguished member of the faculty who usually precedes the entire procession. 

Its placement in, and removal from, a designated place of honor signify the opening and closing of ceremonial sessions. 

The Grand Valley State University mace was used for the first time in the 1983 commencement ceremonies. The mace was designed 

by Beverly Seley, professor in the Art and Design Department at Grand Valley and executed by students in her metalsmithing class.

GRADUATION HONORS 

For the 2012 fall graduates who may qualify for the honors distinction 

once final grades are posted, the designation of “honors candidates” has been granted. 

• Phi Kappa Phi: The National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi was 

founded in 1897 to recognize and encourage superior scholarship 

in all academic disciplines. Senior undergraduate students selected 

for membership must be in the upper 10 percent of the class. The 

GVSU Chapter, #217, is one of 262 at colleges and universities 

throughout the United States. Members are distinguished by their 

cords of gold and blue, the colors of the society. 

• Graduates of the Frederik Meijer Honors College are distinguished 

by their white Meijer Honors College stole and medallion. 

• Members of Alpha Kappa Delta, the sociology honor society, 

are distinguished by their teal cords. 

• Members of Alpha Phi Sigma, the criminal justice honor society, 

are distinguished by their royal blue and gold cords. 

• Members of Alpha Psi Omega, the theatre honor society, 

are distinguished by their sky blue, yellow, and black cords. 

• Members of Beta Alpha Psi, the national honor society for
