The success of Cersaie 2005 in
terms of attendance figures
confirms the show’s unchallenged
status as the most important world
event for the ceramic tile and
bathroom furnishing sectors. The
international stance and central role
that the show has assumed over the
years testifies to the will to look to
the future, to take on new
challenges and to focus on
ever new goals. Cersaie is
now also becoming a vital
appointment for
professionals working on
large projects in the urban,
office and commercial
segments as ceramic tiles
are increasingly used for
major works such as
ventilated facades, public
buildings and squares,
shops and offices, as well as the
customary interior and exterior
residential applications.
In a tradition that began in 2000,
each year an internationally
acclaimed architect or interior
designer is commissioned to design
the show’s poster. This year’s image
has been created by Antonio
Citterio, an eclectic professional
who works in both fields and in
1999 set up the Antonio Citterio
and Partners multidisciplinary
architecture, industrial design and
graphic design firm, based in Milan
and Hamburg. He is rationalist in
approach, as evidenced by his most
significant works, and has a
preference for simple shapes that
are clean and elegant in their
linearity, shorn of all decorative or
functional elements. This
preference clearly emerges in the
poster created for the next Cersaie.
The image – abstract with indistinct
edges and a rigorous proportion –
depicts a rectangle divided
according to the golden proportion,
an evident expression of the
importance of geometry and the
laws of mathematics as the
foundations of architectural
structures.
The principle of universal harmony
or “golden proportion” (the ratio
whereby the sum of two parts of a
segment is to the larger part as the
larger part is to the smaller part)
lends balance and perfection to any
composition. Recognised by the
ancients as a tool for unifying
multiplicity and harmonising
discordance, even today the golden
section – as demonstrated by
Citterio in his representation – is
used “to express the complete
internal cohesion of shape”.
This sense of proportion and
perfection are the hallmarks of
Cersaie, where each year over 1,000
exhibitors from more than 30
countries display the very best of
world production in the field of
ceramic tiles and bathroom
furniture. The event is attended by
about 90,000 visitors, including
30% from abroad, a figure
unmatched by any other
international tradeshow. Another
outstanding figure is that of
accredited journalists: last year there
were 580, including 259 from
abroad.
Cersaie, to be held from 26 to 30
September 2006 in Bologna, is a
crucial appointment for
professionals in the fields of
architecture, interior design, real
estate, distribution and installation,
as well as members of the public
with an appreciation for elegance
and sophistication. ∏

PANARIAGROUP ACQUIRES
FLORIDA TILE
Panariagroup has announced an
acquisition in the United States: at
the end of February the Italian
ceramic company acquired the fundamental
assets of Florida Tile from
the Milestone Capital Fund for 22.5
million dollars. These assets comprise
Assopiastrelle and the Italian Trade Commission are
pleased to announce the winners of the 2006 Ceramic Tiles
of Italy Design Competition. This year, the competition
received a record-breaking number of submissions with 50
exquisitely designed projects. The projects were a showcase
of innovative applications and installations of Italian
ceramic tile.
RESIDENTIAL WINNER: HUFFT:PROJECTS LLC
The Line House (Springfield, Missouri), utilizes over 3,000
sq. ft. of Italian ceramic tile on its interior and exterior
floors. The home is divided into 3 parts - the main house,
the library, and the workshop - with elegant, versatile Italian
tiles from Casalgrande Padana’s Granitogres series installed
throughout the different sections. Tile selection was key for
Matthew Hufft, principal architect of hufft:projects llc. “I
choose Italian ceramic tile for its beauty, durability and its
capability to be used both outdoors and indoors; which
allowed me to connect the various pieces of the residence
with a uniform material,” states Hufft. Sustainability also
factored into the design of the project. The tiles and
masonry act as solar collector during winter - providing
solar warmth to the house. The materials also offer a nice
contrast to the recycled and scrap wood used for cabinetry.
Additionally the orientation of the home provides natural
light all year long and the natural cross ventilation reduces
air conditioner use.
The Line House is only one of Hufft’s residential projects to
feature Italian ceramic tile. The architect is currently
installing Italian tile in a contemporary space that is under
construction and also planning to use it in another home,
still in design. “In fact, I have used it in all of my residential
projects,” says Hufft.
INSTITUTIONAL WINNER: SAN DIEGO COUNTY
REGIONAL AIRPORT AUTHORITY
The San Diego International Airport restoration presented a
unique challenge to architect Bob Bolton of the Facility
Development department of the airport. Gensler Architects
was responsible for the original renovation design, yet after
a short 18 months, the concourses of the nation’s busiest
single runway commercial airport needed repair. Due to
high foot traffic (over 16 million travelers a year), the recently
installed limestone and granite floors were cracking.
Bolton was charged with the task of replacing the floors
without closing the busy airport for the renovation. Other
constraints included: cleanliness, time and limited work
areas each day. Bolton turned to Mapei to produce a custom
grout mix that would satisfy these requirements. The next
hurdle was choosing a porcelain tile for the new floor that
could withstand the heavy traffic, and match the color of the
existing limestone wall. Italian tile manufacturer Ceramiche
Caesar was just the solution. Bolton and the Architectural
Alliance, a team of Minneapolis-based architectural consultants,
worked directly with Caesar and their US distributor
Specs Ceramics in Anaheim, CA to complete the renovation.
18”x18” tiles from Caesar’s Tecnolito collection were
selected for the flooring with a custom-made color created
to fit the exact specifications of the project. According to
Bolton, “It really was a tremendous team effort to put it all
together. And Caesar provided exactly what we wanted with
the porcelain tile, which matches the limestone on the wall
so closely it’s hard to tell them apart.”
COMMERCIAL WINNER: RUSCIO STUDIO INC.
The jury was particularly impressed with the number of
different Italian tile manufacturers used in the renovation of
“The Bay” section of the Place Fleur De Lys Shopping
Centre (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada). A few Italian tile
manufacturers were selected by Ruscio Studio Inc to
complete the expansion of the mall corridor. “The Bay”
section was divided into 2 mall corridors of 20+ feet wide.
The renovation called for one single corridor of 40+ feet in
width. The previous installation had a 3-foot border of
Pastorelli’s “Technostone Karnark” tile starting from the
tenant’s lease line. Ruscio Studio decided to replicate this
design and use the same tile on the new side. “Temblum”
beige 12”x18” and 6”x18” from Pastorelli were installed in
the sections adjacent to the centre pattern. Different shades
from Refin’s “Avant Garde” collection decorate the floor
beneath the seating areas. The 16 foot wide middle portion
is composed of a variety of formats and collections from
Piemmegres, and Imola Ceramica, forming an 8’ by 8’6”
pattern. “We started with one tile - then added different
sizes, then different manufacturers to give the design a
cobblestone look,” stated Robert Ruscio principal of Ruscio
Studio Inc. “Durability and quality were important factors to
consider when choosing the tile. The Italians are leaders in
the production of porcelain tile plus Italy is the fashion
capital of the world - making Italian tile the perfect choice
for a shopping mall,” added Ruscio.
SPECIAL MOSAIC RECOGNITION:
RENE GONZALEZ ARCHITECT, INC
This year, the jury awarded a special recognition to Rene
Gonzalez Architect for their stunning design of the
Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation in Miami, Florida.
Using over 1 million Bisazza tiles, the firm created a 125’x35’
image of a jungle on the façade of the building. Rene
Gonzalez Architect designed the image then Bisazza used
their software to match each individual color pixel from the
design to one of their 20x20mm tiles. One hundred and
seven colors from 3 different series: Le Gemme, Smalto and
Vetricolor. Bisazza donated over one million tiles and
devised a new exterior paneling system to bring the project
to life. The façade was produced by hand in 12”x12” sections
which were then applied and grouted onto 4’x4’ aluminum
panels. The panels were then anchored to an aluminum
structure attached to the exterior of the warehouse.
According to the firm’s principal, Rene Gonzalez, “The
design of the façade is a contradiction to the expected white
and concrete clad exteriors of most art institutions. The
gallery space and garden below are meant to foster
exchanges between the Miami and global art community.” ∏
and use of Italian ceramic tiles in
the North American marketplace.
Wayne Tile was a stand out in each
of the rigorous standards set by
the Italian ceramic tile industry.
Established in 1950, Wayne Tile,
like many other tile companies,
had its very humble beginnings in
the tile installation business. A family-owned
and operated business,
led by brothers Robert, Harry and
Donald Westra, Wayne Tile opened
their first showroom in Wayne, New
Jersey in the late 1950s and quickly
established itself as one of the
largest tile contractors in the state.
During the 1960s, as the business
continued to flourish, the brothers
ended the tile installation business
and focused their efforts on retail
and wholesale to builders and contractors.
A second showroom was
opened in Sussex County, New
Jersey in 1974 and a third in 1987
in Rockaway, New Jersey. With the
opening of these two spaces, the
emphasis shifted to importing tiles,
primarily from Italy. This focus has
continued to the present day as the
company currently carries a num-
“In the past two years, there has
been a dramatic shift in our purchases
with most of our Italian purchases
growing substantially, and
our Spanish purchases dropping
dramatically. The main reason for
our increase in purchasing more
Italian tiles is simply the superior
style and design of Italian tile. Italy
has become the premier source
for today’s leading styles and most
technologically advanced tiles. It
should be no surprise that a culture
with such a long tradition of
artistic expression would product
the world’s most fashionable tiles,”
said Tim Westra, Sales Manager
and part-owner of Wayne Tile.
Today Wayne Tile has three showrooms
located throughout the state
as well as administrative offices, a
distribution center and a designer
showroom in Wayne, New Jersey.
The three founding members can
still be found helping out at the
serving on the board of directors,
yet they have passed the torch
onto the second generation of
Westras to continue servicing the
Market
Growth in US building industry
continues in spite of higher
interest rates.
by Donald Deangelis
The 2005 was an extraordinary
year for the US real property market,
marking the culmination of a
period of steady expansion that
began in 2000. This growth was
driven by numerous factors,
including population growth, economic
stability and, most of all,
low interest rates. Large numbers
of families have taken advantage of
the favourable situation to remodel
their homes or to buy properties,
thereby pushing up prices throughout
the country, most significantly
in New York and California. This in
turn has encouraged speculation
and further invigorated the market.
According to all the analysts, the
slowdown that began in the last
four months of 2005 marks a natural
return to normality after a fiveyear
period characterised by
extremely rapid growth in both volume
and prices.
In 2005 construction expenditure
in the United States exceeded
$1,146 billion, 7.8% more than the
$1,063 billion in the previous year.
The private construction accounted
for $892 billion, a 7.8% increase
over 2004 and public construction
rose to $254 billion.
The seg-
ment that has
done most to
drive building
growth is private
residential,
which comprises
54% of the US
building market
at $642 billion
(9.7% increase
from 2004).
Construction of
new single-family
houses was
the largest and
most dynamic
segment of the real estate market,
with a total of 1,245,000 units sold
in 2005, an increase of 6% from
the previous year. Growth was
higher in the southern states
(10.1%) and in the Northeast
(9.4%), while levels of construction
Effective mortgage rate and the ten-year treasury yeld
In 2005 construction
expenditure
States exceeded $
7,8% more than
the $ 1,063 billion
in the previous
year
remained stable in the other
regions: +0,6% in the West and no
change in the Mid-West. There
were 1,577,000
single-family
housing starts in
2005, which
when added to
the figure for
multi-family
housing makes a
total number of
housing starts of
2,064,000units.
This included
about a million
in the South,
half a million in
the West,
350,000 in the
Mid-West and
200,000 in the North-East, with
total growth of 5.6% compared to
the 1,955,000 of 2004.
Although 2005 was a positive year
for residential building and for the
construction industry in general,
the last four months of the year
showed clear signs of a slowdown.
In November, new house purchases
dropped by 11.3% and the average
price of a house fell to
$216,000 compared to $225,000
in October (-4.1%). The drop in
demand for new housing was particularly
evident in the West, where
the largest fall in the past ten years
was recorded in November, -22.1%.
There was a decrease of 18.3% in
the Midwest and 5.5% in the South,
whereas the Northeast showed
13.4% growth.
There are a number of factors
behind this trend, including the
increase in interest rates by the
Federal Reserve Bank; the rise in
home building costs, partly due to
higher fuel costs; the higher cost of
land, building materials (6.1% on average in 2005)
and labour, due to the lack of specialist workers and
lower unemployment rates.
In spite of all these factors, the forecasts for 2006 are
far from alarming and most sector experts expect to
see only a small slowdown with respect to 2005.
David Lereah, chief economist at the National
Association of Realtors, predicts sales of 6.8 million
existing residential buildings in 2006, down 4.4%
from the 7.1 million of 2005, and a 6% fall in new
home sales over 2005. The NAR leadership does not
appear overly alarmed by these forecasts, stressing
that the slowdown is simply a return to normality
after an exceptional year. David Seiders from the
National Association of Home Builders predicts that
the number of housing starts will fall by 6-7% in
2006 compared to 2005. Seiders sees little likelihood
of the speculative bubble bursting and believes that
the property market is simply cooling off after becoming
incandescent in recent years. This optimism is
shared by the numerous industry professionals interviewed
by the Wall Street Journal in mid January, who
believe that the residential building market, buoyed by
the steady population growth, will remain profitable in
2006. Although interest rates have risen in recent
months, they are still at relatively low. With regard to
building material, the analysis of the National
Association of Home Builders predicts an overall 5-
6% increase, slightly lower than that of 2005. The
remodelling market also saw considerable growth in
2005, slackening only during the last few months of
the year. According to figures from the Joint Center
for Housing Studies of Harvard University, Americans
spent almost $150 billion on remodelling their homes
in 2005 (4.3% more than in 2004, a year that saw an
extraordinary 20% growth over 2003). However,
remodelling expenditures were lower in November
than in October (-4.1%).
Another market linked to remodelling is that of retail
sales of building materials and garden equipment.
According to Department of Commerce figures, retail
sales of these products totalled $332.6 billion in 2005.
In December, this sector suffered a 0.6% downturn,
whereas the year as a whole saw 9.7% growth over
2004. Although many remodelling market professionals
consider it unlikely that the growth figures of 2005
can be sustained in 2006, the outlook for the new
year is definitely positive for this sector. ∏
A new year, a new beginning. At the
Gardenia Orchidea plants in
Spezzano, 2006 was ushered in with
the introduction of an innovative
graphic application method in three
production lines. “It’s about
integrating four-colour decoration
machinery directly into the
production line,” explains General
Director Massimo Bonezzi, “in order
to create floor and wall coverings,
and special trims with graphic
characteristics that are completely
new in mass production”. A long
series of tests has led to the
determination of the various types of
bodies, firing methods, glazes, inks
to be employed, and their related
colorimetric development. A new
path that is yet to be explored, with a
Studies from Lea
Ceramiche Diego
Grandi explores the
potential of ceramic
tile in search of new
surface textures and
languages
Lea Ceramiche is presenting Studies, a material
and cultural exploration by Diego Grandi based on
two of the company’s most important collections,
Midtown and Stonehenge, enhancing them with
plays of light and textural and sensorial contrasts.
Blending Ceramiche Lea’s distinctive research
with the creativity of Diego Grandi, Studies
embodies an evolution of ceramic material, the
creative arena for experimentation with new
combinations of materials.
In Studies the more matt nature of Midtown
porcelain tile meets a luminous glass powder,
creating a texture which emerges from the
ceramic body with the energy of colour and the
dynamic effects of light.
The Studies Stonehenge version features grittier
geometries and shapes, in which bright, rigorous
lines run through the ceramic body, intersecting
to create sharp edges that contrast with the matt
nature of the ceramic body.
The sanding processes, the precision of the wire
cuts and a capacity to mix together different
bodies are just a few of the characteristics of this
new project, which demonstrates Lea Ceramiche’s
technological capability and desire to experiment
and constantly renew itself.
Studies is the latest project in a product
development strategy that the company has been
pursuing for the last few years. Progetto L14, for
example, has been a major innovation for Lea
Ceramiche, a wall tile that is not just a surface
covering but a genuine furnishing accessory with
its combination of form and colour, animated
surfaces and plays of light, creating a
heterogeneous and constantly evolving new
language.
