A degree course is very different from A-level or other level 3 qualifications in
that you will be expected to take responsibility for yourself and your learning.
There are considerable sources of help at your disposal, however – and we say
more about these in the section on ‘References and finding your own sources’,
below (page 35) – but they cannot do the work for you. Teaching in higher
education tries to put the student at the centre of the experience and, considerably
aided by IT, the lecturer becomes ‘not a sage on the stage, but a guide by
your side’. However, lecturers vary in their approach to university teaching, so be
prepared for both sage and guide teaching models.
Filing
ORGANIZING INPUTS 29
Good filing is the key to coping well with the course, and you will probably end
up with both paper and electronic filing systems as information will arrive in
different formats from different sources. Decide how you are going to tackle your
filing and try to keep it up to date. Even rapidly scanning something in order to
file it correctly is a way of rehearsing it, which will help you to remember it.
One simple, if old-fashioned, paper-based way is to have different-coloured files
for each lecture course or subject area, and use dividers for different topics. Write
your notes on ready-punched paper pads and file them as soon as possible. This
is one situation where you should not skimp on paper – having to tear a sheet in
half because the contents need to go in two different places is far from ideal!

Hooray! Your file is uploaded and ready to be published.
