yUvAL ShAUL
I’m the hairiest artist in the world. Hair, fur, skin, shield, sense. Total male, animal, repulsive and attractive at the same time. Men are hunters,
it’s our instinct. Identification with the victim - that’s culture. The repression of the instinct - that’s culture. You can’t define it - that’s art
Born in Israel, 1961
Lives and works in Tel-Aviv, Israel
By RAyA zOMMER, MUSEUM dIRECTOR, EIN hOd,
SUMMER 1999
Yuval Shaul’s new series of works, currently exhibited at the Janco
Dada Museum, addresses a moral problem. All the works are made of
animal hides, animals which not only provide man with meat, but those
whose hides, muscles and fur benefit man. Since the dawn of civilization
man used to his advantage, and even today, on the threshold of the
millennium, the exploitation continues.
Yuval Shaul uses the skins as a kind of ready made. He buys them after
they have been treated, and are ready for their next function (upholstering
material? garment? rug?), but he does not treat them any further and
does not change them in any way. What he does is introduce man’s
greatest creation-culture: words put together to produce an idea.
Yuval Shaul juxtaposes two principal essences constituting his works:
matter versus spirit. The matter is the base, and the spirit is the verbal
expression of the fur.
He culls his sayings from all sorts of sources, but most of them have
their origins in popular catch phrases. He has found some in newspaper
articles or in books, and some are classical aphorisms, which he quotes
in his works in Hebrew and in English. Although they originally referred
to every-day occurrences, most of them are full of pathos. “Hope always
dies last” is an overstated title of a news story about the failure of a football
team, which he stamped on a cow skin. “Happiness is an achievement
without refinement” is a sentence he found in article dealing with poverty
and with every man’s right for happiness. And what about animals? Is
“Purgatory is fellowman” the answer?
In the majority of works the association between animal and text is only
implied and exists on the philosophical level, but in some of them Shaul
presents the problem directly: “Many foals died whose hides became
saddles on their dam’s backs”. Every word in this gruesome sentence is
printed separately on the skin of a cow and is elegantly framed. “To live
they do not wish, to die they don’t know how” is stamped in a circle on a
stretched round -framed cattle skin.
40
Shaul prints the sayings in large, distinct and well-marked letters, as
befits a civilized person. The skins, on the other hand, hang loosely in
most of the cases. Man’s strong point in his spirituality; the animal only
supplies the base. The writing is sometimes applied obliquely, as if on
delivery boxes, apparently to suggest that men treats cattle as goods.
The artist thinks that the work bearing the inscription “Emotions are the
natural substitute to intelligence” presents the problem in the most blatant
way. Even though opinions vary as to whether animals have feelings,
man indisputably differs from them in his superior intelligence, thanks to
which he has become the most powerful creature on earth, while using
and abusing the animals to his advantage. If man had assimilated this
saying, he might have treated animal as creatures with equal rights to
his own.
Shaul also uses humor, in sentences like “ The one who has no salt in
his tears has no sugar in his laughs”, or “Silence is the beloved food of
sorrow”. But his humor is mostly apparent in the series of maps, in which,
using the titles “Asia”, Europe”, etc. he associates the natural spots and
splashes on the cattle’s skin with the geographical division of the world
by man. However, the use of humor, the elegance and the meticulous
writing do not obscure the principal message of the exhibition. The
artist’s gentle handling of the cattle’s hide is rather unlike man’s rough
handling of animals.
Yuval Shaul juxtaposes in his works culture and sophistication with
beastliness and wildness. The works are minimalist, but the conjunction
between the words and the material gives rise to a charged, thought
provoking and irritating effect. Ultimately we are left with a question
whether a work of art made of the skin of animals is not in itself an act
of exploitation. The artist has chosen to express himself and present
the problem by using the genuine material, and thus radicalizing his
message. It is a sort of protest and a way to bring up the issue for public
debate. The question itself remains open.

hAGAI ARGOv
Born in Israel. A graduate of Hamidrasha art academy.
Hagai Argov’s painting summons the viewer to a discussion about live,
about the essence of the action of art, about history and object. His
act of art is complicated. Its starts outside by acceding to a discarded
object. an object that has been removed from its original goal. Argov’s
works hold turbid colorfulness which starts with light and color and ends
up differently. The shape starts as landscape and continues its way into
loosing shape, or on to another discussion about abstract.
jACK jANO
Born in Fez, Morocco, immigrated to Israel at early age and settled in
Shlomi. In his works, Jano creates models of tombs and synagogues
made of rusty and disintegrating iron, worn-out books, melted wax,
yahrzeit candles, and other materials. All these are fused into a
sculptural design that revives the various elements and gives them both
a religious and artistic validity.
The auctioneer is bound by the indications in the catalogue, modified only by eventual annoucements made at the time of the sale noted into
the legal records there of. An exhibition prior to the sale permits buyers to establish the condition of the works offered for sale and therefore
no claims will be accepted after the hammer has fallen. Catalogue photographs are not contractually binding
ENCHÈRES. //. BIDS
Biddin g will be in accordance with the lot numbers listed in the catalogue or as announced by Pierre Bergé & associés, and will be in increments
determinated by the auctioneer. The highest and last bidder will be the purchaser. Should Pierre Bergé & associés recognise two simultaneous
bids on an object, the lot will be put up for sale again and all those present in the saleroom may participate in this second opportunity
to bid.
RETRAIT DES ACHATS. //. REMOVAL OF PURCHASES
From the moment the hammer falls, sold items will be in the exclusive responsability of the buyer. Transportation and storage will be invalided to
the buyer. The buyer will be solely responsible for insurance, and Pierre Bergé & associés assume no fiability for any damage items may incur from
the time the hammer falls. All transportation arrangements are the sole responsability of the buyer.
PRÉEMPTION. //.
In certain cases, the French State is entitled to use its right of pre - emption on works of art or private documents. This means that the state
substitutes itself for the last bidder and becomes the buyer. In such a case, a representative of the French State announces the exercise of the
pre - emption right durin g the auction and immediately after the lot has been sold, and this declaration will be recorded in the official sale
record. The French State will have then fifteen (15) days to confirm the pre - emption decision. Pierre Bergé & associés will not be held
responsible for any administrative decisions of the French State regardin g the use of its right of pre - emption.
FOLLE ENCHÈRE. //. DEFAULT OF THE BUYER
Any lot unpaid by the buyer within 3 months since the day of the auction will be re-ordered for sale by Pierre Bergé & associés, after the legal
former notice, the possible difference of price remaining to the buyer in default. As a result, the owner mandates PBA to decide and carry out
the procedure legally applied in the case of default of the buyer.
