It is interesting how a 10 to 15 year period can
drastically change the demographics of Central
Valley Corvettes. When Pam and I joined in 1997
there were over 100 members and as I recall only
two retired people: Jim and Dorothy Gregerson.
While the rest of us toiled at a career or
entrepreneurship, the Gregersons alternated time
between homes in Ahwahnee and Lake Havasu.
Remember how they came all the way home early
from Arizona just to attend our monthly meetings?
Now it is 16 years later. We have gone from 2% of
the membership retired to 60.5%. Of our current
roster of 78, that means 47 have retired and just 31
continue to work for a living. At this rate, the
numbers will rise even more dramatically in the
coming years. That’s because only 18 members are
under the age of 60. In fact we have just three
members in their 40’s, with 15 in their 50’s. A
staggering 41 people (53% of the entire club) are in
their 60’s, while 18 people (the same number of 40
and 50 year olds combined) are in their 70’s. At the
top of the list is Ed Kroeker who will be 82 in late
March.
As to those 31 still working (39.5%), all of the 18
people under 60 still have jobs, 12 of the 41 in their
60’s are still employed and one of the 18 people
70+ still goes to the office. When you throw us all
into one bag, the average age of Central Valley
Corvettes has increased to 64.87 years.
In 1997, we only had a handful of people in their
mid 60’s as our oldest members. Today the mid
60’s is the clubs average age. Partly as a result, our
membership rolls have been trimmed by 27% and
the number of activities is down by 40%. Recalling
2000, CVC had 45 runs that year. It was rare to go
more than two weeks without an event. Now we
are lucky to have 25 to 30 runs and some months go
completely devoid of excursions.
There is not a lot we can do about turning back our
biological clock, but it is not too late to rejuvenate
our mental state of mine; start thinking about
planning a run or an activity. Get the Corvette out
when the occasion presents itself. Think of ways to
recruit younger members. If we don’t, I’m afraid
we will end up becoming nothing more than a knife
and fork club.
VOTE TO MOVE MONTHLY MEETINGS TO 6:30pm
During our February meeting, Central Valley Corvettes discussed moving our
monthly meetings from 7:00pm to 6:30pm. Several of our members live out of
Fresno and the change will allow them to return home at a more reasonable time.
CVC membership will vote on this proposal on March 19. Should this pass, then
our meetings will begin at 6:30pm beginning with the April 16 th monthly get
together. Be sure to attend this meeting in order to vote on this change.
I’m Back!! I’m filling in for Jan Pfelpsen this
month while she and Gary take a well-deserved
vacation cruising the Western Caribbean. While
cruising they’ll see Roatan Island, visit the
country of Belize and Cozumel, Mexico. Hope
they have a great time and will give us a report
on their adventures next month
Missed Joyce and Ed Kroeker at the meeting,
Ed is recovering from a fall he took earlier in
the month. He had a severe urinary tract
infection causing him to be weak and dizzy and
fall head first in the bathroom. He was treated
for the infection but is still tired and had to use a
wheelchair and a walker for a few days. Joyce
said she always talks about making memories
but Ed’s Illness brought back a few bad ones.
While this was all going on, Joyce had the
stomach flu; glad to report that they’re both on
the mend. They are hoping to be well by the end
of March so they can attend the National
Demolition Association’s 40 th Annual
Convention in San Diego. The whole family is
scheduled to attend to see Jeff, Ed and Joyce’s
son, installed as President. There will be a
special dinner held on the Aircraft Carrier USS
Midway. The grandchildren are excited about
the trip as they like to look at all the big
equipment; but hard to say which they are
looking forward to more the big equipment or
day at Lego Land.
Keith and I also had the flu earlier this month
and I have to say this was the first time in all my
working years that I have ever missed more than
two days in a row being sick. So glad that that’s
behind us!
Sad news for Lupe Dawson, she lost the last of
her 9 brothers this month. This is the brother
that lost his son to cancer earlier this year; he
also had cancer and just never recovered from
the loss of his son and his health just
deteriorated. Lupe and her sister from Michigan
are all that’s left of her siblings; our
condolences to Lupe, her sister and rest of their
family.
Don and Sharon Condley lost one their beloved
dogs last month, their Hannah was only 10 but
she developed heart disease and poor little girl
couldn’t breathe so they had to put her to sleep.
We are so sorry for the loss of your cherished
pet.
I heard from Jill Kroeker-Rosen and she had
good news for us. Steve received a good report
from his doctors and the growth appears to be
shrinking. Great news since there has only been
a couple of cases of anyone else developing this
inflammation around an aortic stent sight. He’ll
continue on his medication and hopefully will
soon be able to have the stent removed from his
bladder. So send your prayers and good wishes
his way.
Sue Comer sent me a note to let know that
Sweetie of hers Dale, gave her a Maine Coon
kitty for their anniversary. She’s small version
of Toby, their cat that passed away last year.
They have named her Heidi because she hides
under the bed. Sue is spending some time at the
Coast but Dale was rear-ended on the way home
last Sunday. He was seeing the doctor this week
and getting an estimate on the damage to his
truck. Said the truck fared better than him;
nothing too serious, but he does have some
lower back pain and some neck pain.
Charlotte Renna reports her daughter and
roomie has moved into her own dream house.
She moved in 6 months after Joe passed away
and has been there for almost 3 years now.
Charlotte says she will miss Kathy and her two
grand pups and Sally the big fat cat (which we
never saw) and it was a good time for both of
them; now it’s now time for both of them to
grow up and be on their own. We wish Kathy
much happiness in her new home.
Chuck and Linda are proud Grandparents. Their
granddaughter Megan got married last month to
her Marine boyfriend and granddaughter
Amanda’s basketball team took championship
in their league and now they’ll being playing in
Division Playoffs. Good Luck to both of the
girls.
Chuck and Linda have also been doing a little
remodeling. They had wood flooring installed in
their entry and in the kitchen and it looks great.
Freida and Herbert are also finishing up some
remodeling; they did their master bathroom last
year and have had the guest bathroom
remodeled and now their updating their kitchen.
They have had new appliances installed, granite
countertops and the new flooring in the kitchen
floor is almost done; can’t wait to see it.
I sent Mary Ann Whitson a note asking if their
bathroom remodeling was finally done and she
said yes and it only took 17 weeks and 1 day!!
They were told it would take about 40 days to
complete and granted there were holidays
involved; Thanksgiving, Christmas and New
Year’s but they didn’t realize that meant 40
working days! They had planned to have the
other bathroom done but now think they are
going to wait for a while …. maybe forever. But
when they do have it redone they will use a
different contractor and will find out how many
real days it really should take.
If anyone is going to be in the Palm Springs area
before June be sure to check out the giant statue
of Marilyn Monroe in her iconic pose in the
white dress. Pat Garrahan had the opportunity to
see it when she was in Palm Springs for
Patrick’s cousin’s memorial service last month.
Don & Sylvia Johnson have sold their home in
Kingsburg, packed up everything and spent their
last evening in this area with us at the General
Meeting. By the time you read this they will be
back in Sequim, Washington. I’m sure you join
me in wishing them happiness and good luck.
We’ll miss you.
Well that’s it for me this month; I’ve enjoyed
filling in for Jan, thank you all for sending your
happenings. Please remember to send all your
Sunshine & Clouds to Jan; life is more fun when
you’re sharing it with your friends.
Your “Old” Gossip Girl,
Debbie Garrison
The ingredients:
1/2 lb butter
2 1/3 cups granulated sugar (superfine works best if you have it handy)
4 eggs
9 rounded tablespoons grated chocolate (approximately 3 standard
squares of baking chocolate, / 3 1/2 ounces of other chocolate)
5 rounded tablespoons / 1 3/4 ounces ground almonds
1 cup / 5 ounces of cold, sieved or riced cooked potato (see below for
specific directions about the potato)
2 1/2 cups / 10 ounces (plain flour is fine, but cake flour is better if you
have it)
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 rounded teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup milk
2 medium or 3 small potatoes
For preparing the pan you'll bake in:
1 1/2 tablespoons flour
1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa
First prepare your cake pan. A tube pan like a Bundt pan works best for this
recipe. Butter it well inside, paying particular attention to any flutings or
crevices in the pan. Then mix the flour and cocoa together and use this
mixture to flour the inside of the pan.
Now prepare your cooked potato by one of these two methods:
Boil in unsalted water 2 medium-sized potatoes or 3 small potatoes in
their jackets, then drain, cool completely, peel, and rice or sieve.
An important note about the potatoes: Do not add them to the batter if
they are even slightly warm. If you do, the result will be a heavy cake that
may fail to rise, or only rise partway. Also: We have never tried this cake
with instant mashed potatoes. Better to play it safe and use the real thing.
1. Grate the chocolate on a fine grater, or pulse in a food processor.
2. Sift the flour once by itself. Then sift it a second time with the cinnamon,
baking powder and salt.
3. Cream the butter with the sugar until light and fluffy.
4. Separate the eggs. Add the yolks, one at a time, to the creamed
mixture, beating well after each one.
5. Stir in the grated chocolate and ground almonds. Add the tthoroughly
cooled and sieved potato and stir again.
6. Add the flour alternately with the milk, beating gently until smooth after
each addition.
7. Whip the egg whites until stiff but not dry. Fold the whipped egg whites
carefully into the cake mixture.
8. Spoon into the prepared Bundt pan / tube pan: tap gently once on the
counter to settle. Bake for 1 3/4 hours. Test for doneness with a
toothpick or skewer at the end of this time: bake for another 15 minutes
if needed.
9. Remove from the oven and allow to rest in the pan for at least twenty
minutes before removing from the pan: then cool on a rack.
To finish, frost the chocolate cake with a chocolate-based icing, or (if you
prefer the simple approach) dust it with powdered sugar.
Last used to identify regular-production
Corvettes in 1976, the “Stingray” label will
again help define Chevrolet’s legendary
two-seater when the long-running breed’s
all-new C7 rendition goes on sale later this
year.
“Stingray is one of the hallowed names in
automotive history,” said GM global design
vice president Ed Welburn during the C7’s
celebrated introduction last month at
Detroit’s North American International Auto
Show. “We knew we couldn’t use [it] unless
the new car truly lived up to the legacy.” No
problem. With an estimated 450
horsepower, the 2014 Stingray will rank as
the most powerful standard Corvette ever,
not to mention the stingiest on gas, thanks in
part to a long list of weight-saving
components, including a new aluminum
frame. All-time best braking and cornering
are promised as well.
That Chevy officials opted to unveil their
latest “best ’Vette yet” in January 2013 was
only right considering the event coincided
with the car’s 60th birthday.
Know anyone who was there in New York
in January 1953 when the first Corvette
debuted, in concept car form, onstage at
General Motors’ annual Motorama
extravaganza? It’s probably even harder
these days to find one of the “preferred”
first-year buyers. Only 300 1953 Corvettes
were built — all featuring white exteriors
and red interiors — on a makeshift assembly
line in Flint, Mich.
All also featured a Powerglide-backed
“Stovebolt” six-cylinder beneath their
forward-hinged fiberglass hoods, and this
limiting combination, which remained in
effect after production moved to St. Louis in
1954, almost killed off the Corvette before it
had a real chance to roll. Chevy’s new-for-
1955 small-block V-8 (and a three-speed
manual transmission) surely helped save the
day, as did the emergence of Zora Arkus-
Duntov, the Corvette’s first chief engineer.
A new, better-received body appeared in
1956, followed by optional fuel injection
and an optional four-speed stick in 1957,
and the hits just kept coming from there.
Some 1.5 million Corvettes later,
Chevrolet’s proud legacy will, as the C7
name implies, evolve into its seventh
generation this fall. The first, the so-called
“solid-axle” run (consisting exclusively of
convertibles) ended in 1962. Expressed in
two words the first time around, the original
Sting Ray debuted in 1963 along with a new
coupe body and independent rear
suspension. These second-generation
Corvettes, built through 1967, are
commonly called “mid-year” models today.
Some enthusiasts call third-generation
models “Sharks” in honor of the 1965 Mako
Shark II showcar that predicted the
Corvette’s 1968 restyle. Still the longest of
the seven model runs, this generation
remained on the market up through 1982,
with Corvette production moving east from
Missouri to its present location in Bowling
Green, Ky., the previous year. Chevrolet
officials then opted to skip the 1983 model
designation due to delays encountered
during development of the fourth-generation
Corvette, which debuted as a 1984 model
then retired in 1996.
The radically redesigned fifth generation
was initially slated to make the scene in
August 1992, just in time to help mark the
Corvette’s 40th birthday. But stumbling
blocks again took their toll, pushing the big
date back to 1997.
It was during this protracted crawl to market
that the Corvette’s generational “code
names” came into vogue, and once “C5”
became popularized it logically followed to
retroactively identify the preceding groups
accordingly. The C6 then appeared in 2005
to do its predecessor one better.
Now we await the C7 Sting Ray. If only we
humans could look even half as good in our
60s.
Irish Blessings and Sayings
With Ireland being famous for its Saints and Scholars, it comes as no surprise that it’s also a
country famous for its blessings.
Some blessing may be hundreds of years old when others could have been created last week by
some bloke sitting in Papua New Guinea, so what is an Irish blessing?
For one thing, an Irish Blessing is about welcoming, warmth and turning a negative situation into
a positive one. It’s no wonder the people in Ireland tried to stay positive with its long history of
misery.
Here are some examples of Irish Blessings you may see:
May the roads rise up to meet you,
May the wind be ever at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rain fall softly upon your fields,
And, until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hallow of His hand.
May you be poor in misfortunes,
and rich in blessings,
May you know nothing but happiness,
from this day forward,
May good luck be your friend,
In whatever you do,
And may trouble be always,
A stranger to you.
May you always have work for your hands to do,
May your pockets hold always a coin or two,
May the sun shine bright on your windowpane,
May the rainbow be certain to follow each rain,
May the hand of a friend always be near you,
And may God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.
May flowers always line your path and sunshine light your day.
May songbirds serenade you every step along the way.
May a rainbow run beside you in a sky that’s always blue,
And may happiness fill your heart each day your whole life through.
May the sun shine all day long,
Everything go right and nothing wrong.
May those you love bring love back to you,
And may all the wishes you wish come true.
May the friendships you make be those which endure
And all of your grey clouds be small ones for sure.
And trusting in Him to Whom we all pray,
May a song fill your heart every step of the way.
“May God grant you always...A sunbeam to warm you, a moonbeam to charm you,
A sheltering Angel so nothing can harm you.
Laughter to cheer you, faithful friends near you,
And, whenever you pray, Heaven to hear you.”
May you have the hindsight to know where you've been,
The foresight to know where you are going,
And the insight to know when you have gone too far”
“May God give you...For every storm a rainbow, for every tear a smile,
For every care a promise and a blessing in each trial,
For every problem life sends, a faithful friend to share,
For every sigh a sweet song and an answer for each prayer.”
May you never forget what is worth remembering,
Nor ever remember what is best forgotten”
“ “May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live”
Wherever you go and whatever you do, May the luck of the Irish be there with you.
I wish healing upon you,
The healing of Mary with me,
Mary, Michael and Brighid,
Be with me all three.
