Georgetown After about six
months in business as a coffee
roaster and wholesaler operating
from a minimalist manufacturing
space, Cynthia Garcia is ready
to open a coffee and espresso bar
at the H-E-B at Hwy. 29 and IH
35 in May. From her first service
location, she will serve freshbrewed
coffee and sell 1-pound
bags of beans she roasts herself.
At Coyote Moon Coffee LLC,
Garcia roasts beans from all over
the world. The process, she said, is
80 percent science and 20 percent
artistic flare.
“I am the only roaster, and
even as the business grows, I
intend to be the only roaster so it
has the same profile,” she said.
To ensure each bean achieves
the ideal temperature and color
for Coyote Moon coffees, Garcia
Transportation Report
Central Austin In April, city
staff recommended that Rio
Grande and Nueces streets be
designated as the Downtown
Bicycle Boulevard, with trafficcalming
measures to be implemented
only on Rio Grande.
A bicycle boulevard is a street
where all types of vehicles are
allowed, but the road is modified
to enhance bicycle safety and
convenience. The draft recommendation,
following months of
stakeholders meetings, is pending
approval from city boards,
commissions and council members.
A study on the economic
impact of the boulevard was due
May 11, and City Council is set to
consider the plan June 10.
If approved, construction of the
$670,000 project would begin in
the fall or winter, starting with
Rio Grande elements, including
back-in angle parking, a new
traffic signal, speed cushions and
traffic circles. Nueces recommendations
from Third to Seventh
streets would be part of the ongoing
Great Streets project, and
features from Seventh to MLK
Jr. Boulevard would be installed
along with a major waterline project
set for spring 2012.
Staff also recommend that a
bicycle and pedestrian bridge be
built to connect Rio Grande to
the Lance Armstrong Bikeway/
Shoal Creek Trail at Fourth
Street. Staff are also exploring
the feasibility of a two-way
bicycle facility on Rio Grande
to continue the Downtown
Bicycle Boulevard through West
Campus.
Cathedral of Junk
threatened with code
violations and zoning
Southwest Austin The Cathedral
of Junk, a backyard structure
created as a spiritual retreat,
typifies the Keep Austin Weird
culture so much so the City of
Austin featured it on a postcard.
But the structure the city once
touted as an example of Austin’s
unique “weirdness” is now being
threatened by the city for code
compliance and zoning.
Responding to an anonymous
complaint, the City of Austin
issued cathedral owner and creator
Vince Hannemann a citation
for not having a building permit
and certificate of occupancy.
Hannemann immediately
Pflugerville A local information
management company founded
and headed by a Pflugerville
native is a business on the move.
Live Oak 360 CEO Andy
Meadows noticed late last year
half his staff was working remotely,
so he declared a 90-day trial in
which all employees would work
away from the company office
canceled all events and worked
to take care of the permit.
However, during a trip to the
city’s permitting department
April 9, Hannemann was told
that he would now also need a
zoning variance since the structure
is an entertainment venue.
on Burnet Road in north Austin
from October to December.
The trial has never ended. The
office provides a place to take
clients and to have a monthly
meeting. Otherwise, employees
are free to work from homes or
cars or their favorite coffee shops.
Meadows can often be found
at Star Co. Coffee & Café in
downtown Round Rock when not
at meetings.
The CEO, who began his love
affair with computers at age 12
when his parents bought him
his first Mac Plus, started Live
Oak 360 out of the bedroom of
his home in February 2002. The
technology bubble had burst and
he was laid off from Metadot, an
open-source portal and content
management software company.
No one was hiring.
