Saturday, February 9, 2013 celebrating the schwartz center for performing arts and jazz at emory Jazz has been a part of the emory experience since the mid-1970s. beginning with a student-formed ensemble, jazz continued to quietly thrive as a novelty until the 1980s when atlanta jazz luminaries such as ojeda penn and paul mitchell began to share their expertise through courses in Emory Jazz Ensemble, circa 1980. jazz improvisation. with the arrival of dwight andrews, the emory jazz experience was further enhanced by his creation of courses in jazz history and evolution. the 1990s saw the organization of the emory big band by wind ensemble director John lynch and the arrival of pianist Gary motley, who expanded courses in jazz improvisation and formed student jazz combos. upon lynch’s departure, the emory big band was led by atlanta educator stutz wimmer into the early 2000s. Jazz at emory received its most significant national endorsement from dave brubeck in 2002. during a symposium and festival organized by professor stephen crist, students had an opportunity to learn from one of the icons of jazz. this experience was further enhanced with a series of concerts and masterclasses with brubeck. this would provide the foundation and philosophy for what would eventually become the annual emory Jazz festival. student interest in jazz experienced notable growth during the early 2000s–a trend that continues today. Gary motley was appointed director of jazz studies in 2004. while at emory, he has provided a formal platform for jazz, which includes the development of curriculum, ensembles, and technology. partnering with the emory center for interactive teaching, motley has developed the Jazz studio; a technology-based resource center designed to enhance the learning experience for the more than forty students participating in ensembles from the emory big band to the emory Jazz combos. course offerings include jazz improvisation, jazz theory, and jazz history, as well as private instruction on all instruments. the emory Jazz faculty Quintet and the emory Jazz saxophone Quintet were featured at the national 2013 Jazz education conference held in atlanta. the schwartz center for performing arts became the flagship for the performing arts at emory in 2003. under the direction of robert mckay, the center has presented nationally recognized jazz artists as part of its programming since its inception. in keeping with the philosophy of the jazz studies program, the artists share their knowledge through masterclasses and community outreach activities. Guest artists range from benny Golson to esperanza spalding and Jon hendricks. the 2013 annual emory Jazz festival celebrates the tenth anniversary of the schwartz center and more than thirty years of jazz as a part of the emory experience. please join us as we salute the efforts of the students, faculty, and community to support america’s most vibrant art form. 6
