Special to the Journal
DUBLIN — In an on-going effort to
communicate the Bladen County Schools
vision, Superintendent Robert Taylor held
his fifth community forum on Thursday
evening.
The forum, held at West Bladen High
School, gave parents an opportunity to
come out and meet Taylor, receive updates
on the progress of Bladen County Schools
and ask questions.
Taylor shared with those in attendance
changes that North Carolina is making to
the curriculum and instruction standards
that are being taught in schools. The
new curriculum, Common Core, is being
adopted across the country. It will create
a more even and level way that students
learn, with each state adhereing to the
same curriculum standards.
He also shared information about the
new technology initiative being put in
place at both East Bladen and West Bladen
high schools. Through funding from the
Golden Leaf Foundation, both high schools
will be able to place digital devices in the
hands of their students. Rollout of the
digital technology to teachers will begin
in the spring of 2012. Student rollout will
start with the 2012-13 school year.
Taylor spoke about school safety within
the district and invited Sheriff Prentis
Benston to explain emergency drills that
take place within each school.
Benston discussed the importance of
having emergency drills to prepare students
and staff in the event a real emergency
occurs. Officer Powell gave an overview
of what takes place during emergency
drills.
Taylor shared data that compared incidents
reports for West Bladen during the
2010-2011 school year and the current
school year. Overall, data showed that
West Bladen did not have an increase in
this year’s incident reports than in previous
years.
The floor was opened up for questions
from attendees, and most of the questions
centered around an altercation that
occured Nov. 16 between two students.
Many felt that the school is a safe place
and want to increase positive support for
the school.
All agreed that cellphones being used
during the school day by students can
create unnecessary distractions. Taylor
emphasized the board of education policy
concerning cellphones which states that
cellphones are not to be out or be used
during the school day.
The next community forum will be held
sometime in January or February at an
elementary school. Parents and community
members are invited to attend.
