I think it’s probably about me. That’s what

I mean, one question that I was coming
back with was how are we using this time,
and clearly I was wondering how it was
for you.
Heidi
I’m not really here. I don’t know why, I’d
rather be at the gym with my mates having
a good time. And that’s how I felt last
week.

an immediate impact of what Paula says,
in that it somehow pinpoints and confirms
Heidi’s experience and enables her to
express it, in contrast to Bill and Judi’s as
yet unsuccessful attempts to do this.
Judi raises very directly a key question,
naming the group, indicated, I believe, by
the intensity of Heidi’s expression, and the
discontinuity around her making it.
This response is in sharp contrast to
Heidi’s rapid acceptance of Paula’s
intervention, and effectively represents a
disavowal of Judi and Bill’s attempts to
reach out to her.
This is clumsy and dysfluent, probably a
result of anxiety in a staff member, but the
concern still gets conveyed, for the
experience of the student making the
expression, also naming the participation
of the group in these events.

Having detailed this episode with some analytic comments, it remains to put it in the
context of the whole session. As noted above, the transcribed sequence comes after the
return from the break in the middle of the session. Looking at the whole session, this
can be seen as a series of episodes, as follows.
