Annals of the AR S – Anniversary volume, 1 – 2006 7 FOREWARD The Academy of Romanian Scientists, ARS is the continuator and the unique heir of the Romanian Academy for Sciences (1936-1948) and of the Romanian Scientists Association – founded based on the Ministry’s Council Decision 1012/30.05.1956, which changed its name in 1996 into Academy of Romanian Scientists. During the meeting from 07.03.2006, the ARS Board has decided that 2006 to be the celebrating year for the 70 th anniversary of the Romanian Academy for Sciences; 50 th anniversary of the Romanian Scientists Association and 10 years of the existence of the Academy of Romanian Scientists. During 1935-1948 the Romanian Academy of Sciences has developed a valuable scientific activity (even though during July 1938 – November 1940 it worked under the name of the Romanian Institute of Sciences), which was concretized in 754 original scientific papers, published in 8 volumes of Comptes rendus de l’Académie des Sciences de Roumanie: Vol. I 1936-1937 6 issues 432 pages Vol. II 1937-1938 6 issues 716 pages Vol. III 1939 6 issues 716 pages Vol. IV 1940 6 issues 446 pages Vol. V 1941 6 issues 462 pages Vol. VI 1942 6 issues 362 pages Vol. VII 1943-1945 1 issue 392 pages Vol. VIII 1945-1946 1 issue 186 pages Copies of these volumes were obtained for the ARS’s Library. The Board meeting from 7th of March has also decided that starting with this celebrating year and based on the experience of the Washington Branch of the ARS (who published 7 yearly volumes of the “Proceedings of the Academy of Romanian Scientists”), to re-instate the practice of the Romanian Academy for Sciences to publish on a yearly basis a volume of scientific papers. In this respect, we kindly asked each one of the 12 scientific sections of the ARS to submit us 2-3 papers in the English and/or French languages, amounting to a total of 30-35 pages for each section. All received papers are published in the first volume of the new series of the Annals of the Academy of Romanian Scientists. We do hope this new series will assist us in making known the scientific work of our Academy members. The Editors
