Tusc<strong>an</strong>, that w<strong>an</strong>derest through <strong>the</strong> realms <strong>of</strong> gloom,<br />

With thoughtful face, <strong>an</strong>d sad, majestic eyes,<br />

Stern thoughts <strong>an</strong>d awful from thy soul arise,<br />

Like Farinata from his fiery tomb.<br />

Thy sacred song is like <strong>the</strong> trump <strong>of</strong> doom ;<br />

Yet in thy heart what hum<strong>an</strong> sympathies,<br />

What s<strong>of</strong>t compassion glows, as in <strong>the</strong> skies<br />

The tender stars <strong>the</strong>ir clouded lamps relume !<br />

Methinks 1 see <strong>the</strong>e st<strong>an</strong>d, with pallid cheeks,<br />

The ascending sunbeams mark <strong>the</strong> day's decrease ;<br />

And, as he asks what <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong> str<strong>an</strong>ger seeks<br />

Thy voice along <strong>the</strong> cloister whispers, " Peace !<br />

PREFATORY NOTE.<br />

HPHE <strong>exhibition</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>work</strong>s <strong>of</strong> D<strong>an</strong>te Alighieri, <strong>of</strong> which<br />

a descriptive <strong>catalogue</strong> will be found on pages 1-44,<br />

has been arr<strong>an</strong>ged, primarily, in connection with <strong>the</strong> visit to<br />

<strong>the</strong> library <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> M<strong>an</strong>chester D<strong>an</strong>te Society,<br />

m<strong>an</strong>y <strong>of</strong> whom may<br />

be still unaware <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wealth <strong>of</strong> material<br />

which is available to <strong>the</strong>m here, for <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> poet in<br />

whose honour <strong>the</strong> society was founded.<br />

The purpose for which <strong>exhibition</strong>s <strong>of</strong> this character are<br />

undertaken from time to time, is to reveal to students, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

to <strong>the</strong> public generally, something <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> riches <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> col-<br />

lections which have made <strong>the</strong> library famous in <strong>the</strong> world<br />

<strong>of</strong> letters, <strong>an</strong>d which, at <strong>the</strong> same time, have helped to make<br />

M<strong>an</strong>chester a centre <strong>of</strong> attraction to scholars from all parts <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> world.<br />

It is hoped, <strong>the</strong>refore, that <strong>the</strong> present <strong>exhibition</strong> may<br />

be <strong>of</strong><br />

service, not merely to those in whose interest it was ostensibly<br />

arr<strong>an</strong>ged,<br />

but also to a much wider circle <strong>of</strong> students <strong>of</strong> litera-<br />

ture in general. To that end, it will remain on view until <strong>the</strong><br />

month <strong>of</strong> October.<br />

It is impossible within <strong>the</strong> limits <strong>of</strong> a short prefatory note<br />

to convey <strong>an</strong>ything like <strong>an</strong> adequate idea <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> r<strong>an</strong>ge<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

collection from which <strong>the</strong> exhibits are selected, but it seems<br />

desirable to indicate, in a few words, something <strong>of</strong> its scope<br />

<strong>an</strong>d character.<br />

The library contains five m<strong>an</strong>uscripts <strong>an</strong>d nearly 6,000<br />

printed volumes <strong>an</strong>d pamphlets relating to D<strong>an</strong>te. The<br />

PREFATORY NOTE.<br />

nucleus <strong>of</strong> this collection, including<br />

<strong>the</strong> rarest <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> most<br />

import<strong>an</strong>t <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early editions, formed part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Althorp<br />

Library, which was purchased by Mrs. Ryl<strong>an</strong>ds in 1892,<br />

from Earl Spencer. These have been added to from time to<br />

time, by <strong>the</strong> purchase <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r groups <strong>of</strong> copies, toge<strong>the</strong>r with<br />

a considerable collection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> modern literature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> subject.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most recent purchases was <strong>the</strong> dated m<strong>an</strong>uscript <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> " Divina Commedia " which is shown in <strong>the</strong> first case.<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> five m<strong>an</strong>uscripts <strong>the</strong> three most import<strong>an</strong>t are ex-<br />

hibited. The first is a copy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " C<strong>an</strong>zoni" written in <strong>the</strong><br />

latter part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fourteenth century for Lorenzo degli Strozzi.<br />

It is ornamented with large initial letters <strong>an</strong>d illuminated borders,<br />

containing portraits<br />

<strong>of</strong> D<strong>an</strong>te <strong>an</strong>d <strong>of</strong> his inamorata. The<br />

second is a copy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " Divina Commedia "<br />

number <strong>of</strong> vari<strong>an</strong>ts from <strong>the</strong> common text, made by<br />

containing a<br />

B. L<strong>an</strong>di<br />

de L<strong>an</strong>dis, <strong>of</strong> Prato, <strong>of</strong> whom nothing is known. The third<br />

is a sixteenth-century copy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " Divina Commedia,"<br />

with <strong>the</strong>" Credo " <strong>an</strong>d o<strong>the</strong>r poems at <strong>the</strong> end, which at one<br />

time was in <strong>the</strong> possession <strong>of</strong> Cavaliere S. Kirkup.<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> printed editions <strong>the</strong> three earliest folios <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

" Divina Commedia " are exhibited, printed in <strong>the</strong> same year<br />

(1472) at Foligno, M<strong>an</strong>tua, <strong>an</strong>d Jesi respectively. The only<br />

serious gap in <strong>the</strong> collection is <strong>the</strong> fourth folio, undated, but<br />

which issued from <strong>the</strong> press <strong>of</strong> Fr<strong>an</strong>cesco del Tuppo at Naples<br />

between <strong>the</strong> years 1473 <strong>an</strong>d 1475. Of this edition not more<br />

th<strong>an</strong> three or four copies are known to have survived, three <strong>of</strong><br />

which are already locked up in national or public libraries.<br />

With this exception, <strong>the</strong> entire r<strong>an</strong>ge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early <strong>an</strong>d principal<br />

critical editions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text <strong>of</strong> D<strong>an</strong>te's great poem is represented.<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> first illustrated edition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " Divina Commedia,"<br />

which has also <strong>the</strong> distinction <strong>of</strong> being <strong>the</strong> only one printed in<br />

Florence during <strong>the</strong> fifteenth century, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two copies<br />

exhibited is believed to be <strong>the</strong> only copy containing twenty

PREFATORY NOTE.<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> engravings, said to have been executed by Baccio<br />

Baldini.<br />

The entries in <strong>the</strong> <strong>catalogue</strong> are fully <strong>an</strong>notated, so that<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r reference to <strong>the</strong> interesting features <strong>an</strong>d peculiarities <strong>of</strong><br />

m<strong>an</strong>y <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> editions shown seems to be unnecessary.<br />

The descriptions as printed, are, as far as <strong>the</strong>y are given,<br />

carefully exact tr<strong>an</strong>scripts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> opening lines, colophons, or<br />

title-pages <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> respective volumes. The upright<br />

bars are<br />

intended to indicate <strong>the</strong> actual arr<strong>an</strong>gement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lines in <strong>the</strong><br />

originals.<br />

Prefixed to <strong>the</strong> <strong>catalogue</strong> will be found a hurriedly pre-<br />

pared diary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> principal<br />

events connected with <strong>the</strong> life <strong>an</strong>d<br />

writings <strong>of</strong> D<strong>an</strong>te, whilst in <strong>an</strong> appendix will be found a list<br />

<strong>of</strong> a selection <strong>of</strong> <strong>work</strong>s on <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> D<strong>an</strong>te, which may be<br />

consulted in <strong>the</strong> John Ryl<strong>an</strong>ds Library.<br />

It remains only for me to say that I am indebted to my<br />

colleagues, Mr. Guthrie Vine, Mr. Peacock, <strong>an</strong>d Mr. Nuttall<br />

for much help in <strong>the</strong> arr<strong>an</strong>gement<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>exhibition</strong> <strong>an</strong>d in<br />

<strong>the</strong> preparation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>catalogue</strong>. But for <strong>the</strong>ir ready help it<br />

could scarcely have been accomplished.<br />

CASE I.<br />

spectively, but this edition, printed at Foligno, is<br />

now generally regarded by bibliographers as <strong>the</strong><br />

earliest.<br />

The difficulty arose from <strong>the</strong> different methods <strong>of</strong> computing<br />

<strong>the</strong> year, which were in vogue in various Itali<strong>an</strong> cities<br />

during <strong>the</strong> fifteenth century. The question is : which<br />

was <strong>the</strong> quarto mese ? At Rome, Mil<strong>an</strong>, <strong>an</strong>d else-<br />

where <strong>the</strong> year beg<strong>an</strong> at Christmas, while at Venice<br />

<strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year corresponded with <strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong><br />

March. Certain authorities believe that at Foligno<br />

<strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year was reckoned from <strong>the</strong> 25th<br />

<strong>of</strong> December. In which case <strong>the</strong> publication <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Foligno edition may be placed<br />

in <strong>the</strong> month <strong>of</strong><br />

April.<br />

That <strong>the</strong>re were at least two impressions <strong>of</strong> this edition is<br />

revealed by Sir A. P<strong>an</strong>izzi in Lord Vernon's " Le<br />

prime quattro edizioni della Divina Commedia," 1 858,<br />

where reproductions are given, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first page <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> two copies in <strong>the</strong> British Museum, described as<br />

" <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> " George iii. copy ".<br />

<strong>the</strong> " Grenville copy<br />

A comparison <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two copies shows a number <strong>of</strong><br />

vari<strong>an</strong>ts. The present copy follows <strong>the</strong> " Grenville<br />

copy "<br />

readings <strong>an</strong>d belongs without question<br />

to <strong>the</strong><br />

first impression.<br />

The opening lines <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> poem show a vari<strong>an</strong>t. The<br />

" " " "<br />

Grenville copy <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> John Ryl<strong>an</strong>ds copy<br />

read :<br />

" [N] El mezo declamin dinra uita mi trouai puna selua<br />

oscura<br />

che la diricta uia era smarrita."<br />

The George iii. copy reads :<br />

" [N] El mezo declamin dinra uita mi ritrouai p una<br />

selua oscura che la diricta uia era smarrita."<br />

Two passages : Paradise XX, 49-54 <strong>an</strong>d XXI, 46-48 are<br />

omitted in this edition. The same passages are<br />

omitted in <strong>the</strong> Naples edition <strong>of</strong> 1473 or 1474.

The commentary attributed in <strong>the</strong> colophon to Benvenuto<br />

da Imola is now regarded by scholars as <strong>the</strong> <strong>work</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Jacopo della L<strong>an</strong>a.<br />

According to Scartazzini <strong>the</strong> comments ascribed to Jacopo<br />

della L<strong>an</strong>a, " The Anonymous Florentine " <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

" Ottimo comento," are in reality but one commentary,<br />

which was copied by later commentators, with <strong>the</strong><br />

addition <strong>of</strong> little fresh matter.<br />

The epi<strong>the</strong>t " Divina " as applied to <strong>the</strong> " commedia " does

CASE 2.<br />

not occur in <strong>an</strong>y <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early editions. The first<br />

edition to appear as " La divina commedia " was<br />

that issued at Venice in 1 555. In <strong>the</strong> colophon given<br />

above one finds <strong>the</strong> expression " inclito et divo d<strong>an</strong>te<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " divino poeta Fiorentino," long before <strong>the</strong>y<br />

begin to apply <strong>the</strong> epi<strong>the</strong>t "divina" to <strong>the</strong> poem<br />

itself.<br />

%* The first Florentine edition, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> only one printed<br />

in <strong>the</strong> fifteenth century in that city. This edition is<br />

celebrated for <strong>the</strong> copper engravings accomp<strong>an</strong>ying<br />

it. These are probably adaptations <strong>of</strong> a series <strong>of</strong><br />

drawings by Botticelli preserved<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Berlin Mus-<br />

eums, whi<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y passed in 1 882 on <strong>the</strong> sale <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Duke <strong>of</strong> Hamilton's collection, <strong>an</strong>d in <strong>the</strong> Vatic<strong>an</strong>.<br />

Although<br />

Botticelli was known to have executed<br />

designs for <strong>the</strong> Divina Commedia, <strong>the</strong>se drawings<br />

were not recognised as his <strong>work</strong> until <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

acquired by <strong>the</strong> Berlin Museums. The comparison,<br />

which was thus rendered possible between <strong>the</strong> de-<br />

signs <strong>of</strong> Botticelli <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> engravings<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Floren-<br />

tine edition, showed that <strong>the</strong> latter were not direct<br />

copies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> drawings, as formerly supposed, but<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r free versions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. The common identifica-<br />

tion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> engraver with Baccio Baldini, a Floren-<br />

tine who, according to Vasari's statement, habitually<br />

<strong>work</strong>ed after <strong>the</strong> designs <strong>of</strong> Botticelli, c<strong>an</strong> only be<br />

regarded as conjectural.<br />

This copy is believed to be <strong>the</strong> only one containing as<br />

m<strong>an</strong>y as 20 illustrations, being one more th<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>y<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r copy possesses. This particular engraving is<br />

found on Sig. c. ii. in <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> c<strong>an</strong>to 3, at<br />

which <strong>the</strong> volume is opened.<br />

In this copy all <strong>the</strong> plates with <strong>the</strong> exception <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> one<br />

prefixed to <strong>the</strong> second c<strong>an</strong>to have been printed separ-<br />

ately.<br />

A number <strong>of</strong> small omissions occur in <strong>the</strong> text <strong>of</strong> this<br />

edition.<br />

This is <strong>the</strong> first appear<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> L<strong>an</strong>dino's commentary.

*** With 68 full-page woodcuts. These are coarsely<br />

Inferno <strong>an</strong>d Purgatorio is preceded by <strong>an</strong> illustration ;<br />

on <strong>the</strong> engravings in <strong>the</strong> Florentine edition <strong>of</strong> 1481.<br />

In <strong>the</strong>ir turn <strong>the</strong>y seem to hare been studied by <strong>the</strong><br />

more skilful artists who designed <strong>the</strong> woodcuts for <strong>the</strong><br />

two Veneti<strong>an</strong> editions <strong>of</strong> 1 49 1 .<br />

At this period <strong>the</strong> customary way <strong>of</strong> representing travellers<br />

on a journey was to show <strong>the</strong>m in several different<br />

<strong>the</strong> printer caused <strong>the</strong> three lines to be added by<br />
