The fire erupted on the river side of state Highway 38, then quickly jumped the road and spread uphill, blocking holiday traffic for hours. The fire started around 7 p.m. near Highway 241, said John Flannigan, a spokesman for the Coos Forest Protective Association, which responded to the blaze. The fire’s cause is under investigation. Fire crews should remain on the scene until about 6 p.m. today to mop up hot spots. The highway is open, but Flannigan warns drivers to be cautious in the area, and to limit unnecessary trips. Firefighters are working from the road. Also, the area where the fire burned is steep, presenting an increased danger of falling debris. Flannigan said the fire spread to aboiut two acres on private land before it was contained. No one was injured, and no homes were threatened. The association brought a bulldozer, a helicopter, three engines, a tender and 22 firefighters to battle the blaze. He originally designed a oneterm class, but students encouraged him to offer additional classes. Now, Hartman offers three terms of the class with different content. Students can take the classes in any order. No credit is offered for spread uphill. The fire was contained inside about 1 1 ⁄2 acres, the association said. Crews remained on scene through the night, mopping up hot spots and checking containment lines. Firefighters will remain at the scene today to ensure the fire does not restart. Coos Forest Protective Association, Elkton Fire Department, Scottsburg Fire Department and the Oregon Department of Transportation responded to the scene. Traffic was interrupted until about 10 p.m., according to the Douglas association. Anyone with information about the brown pickup and boat trailer that may be responsible for the fire should call the Douglas Forest Protective Association at 541-672-6507. The gravel-hauling truck was turning onto 101 from Ingersoll Avenue around 8 a.m. when the trailer came off, blocking the two right lanes of traffic, according to police officers directing traffic at the scene. The Oregon Department of Transportation brought in equipment to remove the trailer.
