Variety of issues, preferences and answers
Car is the best way t o
hit the my office in
quick time
2
People want more road
space for their cars and two
wheelers, is it worth taking
up road space for bus or
cycle lanes?!
The new Metro is
NICE! But its so
painful once you
are off the station
No information on
Buses, that is why I
prefer my own
vehicle
This Study
Objective
Construct
4
• Commuter Issues, preference and perceptions
• 50% PT users, Rest other modes (own vehicle, auto, walking
etc)
• 260 Respondents, sampled from 8 different areas of
Bangalore (30x8 + few extra)
• Done during a mix of peak (8-10am, 5-7pm) and non-peak
(1-3pm) commute hours
Outcome
• PT users: Top issue, wish list for improvement
• Non PT users: Why not PT? What would it take to
use PT?
• All: Perception on cycling and walking
Praja RAAG
Questionnaire
10 minute long survey, designed to
separate perception (hasn’t used but
has opinion) from feedback (is a user,
has a feedback from experience).
5
Praja Mobility
Survey
Plan to redesign and rerun the survey
based on output of first run.
Will most likely convert this to a half
yearly track
All details will be made available in
public domain
Snippets
Some interesting outcomes from the survey
Preferred mode for commute
7
Praja RAAG
4/17/2013
Two wheeler on
top, BMTC/Car
next, then Metro

PT Reasons
8
Praja RAAG
4/17/2013
Bengaluru doesn’t
want to drive, and
spend that money
on petrol/diesel!

Reason for using own vehicle
9
Praja RAAG
4/17/2013
Its mostly about
time!

PT Top Problems
10
Praja RAAG
4/17/2013
PT options
(mainly BMTC
right now) are
slow and crowded

PT Factors
11
Praja RAAG
4/17/2013
Same thing asked a
different way, no
surprises. Time
and crowding
come on top

Last mile for Metro?
12
Praja RAAG
4/17/2013
Walking first, but
parking next.

Cycling for commutes?
13
Praja RAAG
4/17/2013
Not so good
perception

Push for cycling?
14
Praja RAAG
4/17/2013
Top Ask -
Separate lanes

What next on the study?
One more iteration – redesign parts and flow based on first
run, and rerun. Things like:
Better coverage of satellite areas (Commuter Rail catchment)
Kannada translation as option
Grow this to a track
Run it every six months
Seek out some partners to share costs
More money = Can then do large sample sizes, Can do multiple
focused tracks (Bus focused, Mode share checks, Car user
perceptions etc)
