Chamber of Commerce 

Community Service Center

The Community Service Center is the home of the Glenview Chamber 

of Commerce, Family Services of Glenview, Glenview Art League, 

Glenview Counseling Service and Korean Community Services. 

Not-for-profit Glenview organizations are welcome to make use of the 

building’s conference room to hold meetings. 

The Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1923, making it one of 

the earliest Glenview not-for-profit organizations. The Chamber was 

formed to foster community goodwill and to encourage “trade” in 

Glenview; 

this mission remains the same today. 

The Chamber offers many on going programs: The annual Summer 

Festival, Holiday in the Park and Parade to thank citizens for their 

year-long support, this directory, a new resident welcome service 

and support of many civic and business concerns. 

The Chamber is privately supported by business industry, 

manufacturing, and services. It’s 17 member elected board meets 

monthly.

Education 

Glenbrook South High School

Glenbrook South High School, part of District 225, offers extensive 

opportunities in academics, athletics and activities to meet the needs 

of 2,600 students. Over 200 faculty members, 85% of whom have 

Master’s Degrees or beyond, teach over 350 different course offerings. 

The impressive academic program offers classes at various levels 

in English, math, science, social studies, seven world languages, art, 

music, business education, radio/TV, driver education, family & 

consumer science, physical education and 24 AP offerings. Athletics 

and activities complement the curricular program, helping students 

develop their talents and potential, and further connecting them to 

their passions, the school and the community. 

Glenview is proud of the many achievements of Glenbrook South 

students, 98% of whom continue on to college. Their numerous honors 

include an ever-growing list of national academic awards, state 

championships and community service. This year GBS was the first 

public high school student body ever honored with the Outstanding 

Youth in Philanthropy Award. In 2009 the school was ranked as the top 

public school in debate, and in 2008 it won a Grammy Award as 

the top high school in music education. 

The majority of Glenview students attend District 225 Glenbrook 

South High School, pictured above, but small segments within the 

village of Glenview overlap with other districts. Some students may 

attend either Maine East or New Trier High School.

Education 

District 34

Glenview School District 34 educates approximately 4,600 students 

in eight schools in an educational setting that is student-focused and 

includes innovative programs. Student learning takes place in three 

primary schools (K-2), three intermediate schools (3-5) and two 

middle schools (6-8). Within these schools, students are provided a 

comprehensive core curriculum and a variety of fine arts offerings. 

Additionally, the District provides excellent programs in the area of 

special education and early intervention, as well as gifted and 

enrichment education. 

Four of the District’s eight schools have earned the National Blue 

Ribbon School award from the U.S. Department of Education. 

Additionally, the District and individual teachers have earned national, 

state and regional awards for excellence in education. 

Much like the community, District 34 students represent a multitude of 

ethnic backgrounds including white (72%), Asian (12%), Hispanic (11%), 

African American (2%) and multi-racial (3%). The District’s enrollment is 

growing steadily and the District is working toward solutions for that 

challenge to provide the best educational environment possible.

of Glenview’s kindergarten through 8th grade students, there are also 

other elementary school districts serving Glenview including Districts 30, 

31, 37, 39, 63 and 68. 


Health Care

2010 marks Glenbrook Hospital’s 33rd anniversary. Part of 

NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore), the hospital offers 

leading-edge medical care and an outstanding medical staff in a 

community hospital setting. Few hospitals of its size deliver such 

specialized services 

as cardiac care, Center for Breast Health, Eye and Vision Center, 

gastroenterology suite, total joint replacement and neurological 

services including a sleep center, a Parkinson’s disease clinic and a 

cognitive and memory disorder program. Children’s at Glenbrook 

provides outpatient pediatric services and ambulatory surgery in 

partnership with Children’s Memorial Hospital. Glenbrook Hospital 

is a Level II Trauma Center. 

NorthShore also offers services at Park Center including Integrative 

Medicine, Rheumatology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, wellness 

programs and a retail wellness shop. NorthShore has been named one 

of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by Thomson Reuters a record

History 

Glenview History Center Museum 

& Coach House Library

The century-old Ginaine door of heavy oak with an oval, beveled 

glass window bids you welcome to the museum and headquarters of 

the Glenview History Center. 

The old house, circa 1864, a gracious late 19th century farm home, 

was donated together with the beautifully-kept grounds, to the Center 

in 1967 by the Glenview Days Association. "Antique" benches beckon 

to passers-by, inviting them to enjoy the shady, tranquil yard for a 

quiet moment. The museum is furnished with turn-of-the-century 

furniture with many artifacts, utensils and fabrics reflecting Glenview 

life in the late Victorian and Edwardian Period, 1860-1920. 

The generosity of the business community and civic-minded citizens 

have combined to bring the Glenview History Center, its museum and 

its Hibbard Library, to a respected and enduring level. The Center’s 

headquarters at 1121 Waukegan Road in Glenview offers something 

for everyone: the young and the old; the antique "buff"; the serious 

antiquities scholar — and all in charming atmosphere. 

The museum is open Sundays from 1-4 p.m. The Hibbard Library 

is open Tuesday from 1-4 p.m. Both facilities are open to individuals

Public Library

Glenview’s first public library was established in December, 1930, in the former Village 

Hall building at 1930 Prairie Street. A new facility was constructed on the present site in 

1955, with additions in 1968 and 1986. The Library currently houses 285,926 print items 

and an additional 39,527 items in popular audio-visual formats. 

In 2010, the Library will move from its 50,908 square foot building to open the doors 

of a new 85,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility. Additionally, a parking lot will be 

constructed on the site of the old library building. With a completion date of Spring, 2011, 

parking capacity will be increased to 176 spaces. 

The Library is open 72 hours a week to provide information services, access to a variety 

of collections, including those dedicated business, health and genealogy. Extensive youth 

collections, story times for children, films, book discussions, enrichment programs for both 

adults and children and seasonal reading programs for all ages are also offered. The Library 

provides foreign language and literacy materials, as well as special devices and outreach 

services to help seniors and patrons with disabilities fully utilize library services. 

The Glenview Public Library is governed by the Library Board Trustees who are elected 

by Glenview residents for four-year terms in April of odd-numbered years. Trustees serve 

without compensation. 

The new Glenview Public Library will serve as the proud gateway to downtown Glenview 

for the entire community. The new facility will allow the Library to fulfill its 

mission to educate, enrich, inspire and entertain with renewed energy and vision.

Recreation 

Glenview Park District

The Glenview Park District is one of the nation’s finest, providing 

year-round recreation through a wide range of sports, arts, dance, 

fitness and personal interest activities. 

The Glenview Park District manages and maintains 771 acres of 

land including 38 landscaped parks and school grounds equipped with 

39 playgrounds, 38 outdoor tennis courts, 50 ball fields, 33 basketball 

courts, 13 fieldhouses, 27 soccer fields, two sledding hills, 2 skate parks 

and a mini-arboretum. The District also owns and operates the 

Glenview Park Golf Course, a 110-acre, 18-hole course in the heart 

of Glenview; the Glenview National 9 Golf Course, a family-oriented 

nine-hole golf course at The Glen; the Glenview Ice Center with 

full-sized and studio rinks; the Glenview Tennis Club with eight indoor 

courts; two outdoor water parks; The Grove National Historic Landmark 

(see following page); Park Center, a 165,000 square foot community 

center with a health and fitness club, indoor track, 

four-pool aquatic center, two gyms, banquet room and preschool, arts 

and senior center wings; Wagner Farm, an 18.5-acre recreational and 

educational facility, the Schram Memorial Chapel, a former Navy chapel 

now available for rental by the public and Air Station Prairie/ Tyner 

Center, a 32-acre prairie preserve and interpretive center 

(a LEED Platinum Building). 


Recreation 

Kohl Children’s Museum 

of Greater Chicago

Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago is the only Museum in the Chicagoland area 

to exclusively focus on providing interactive, hands-on exhibits for children ages birth to 8. 

All of the Museum’s exhibits and programs are aligned to the Illinois State Learning 

Standards and are designed to nurture a love of learning in young children through 

engaging them in self-directed complex play. 

Founded in 1985 in Wilmette, the Museum quickly outgrew its original facility and moved 

to its current home on an 8.8-acre parcel of land in the center of The Glen in Glenview in 

2005. The 46,700 sq. ft. facility boasts 16 permanent exhibits, including Water Works, 

Dominick’s Supermarket, Car Care, Pet Vet, Music Makers, and Nature Explorers. In addition, 

Habitat Park, a 2-acre outdoor exhibit, features climbing structures, a prairie grass maze, an 

underground tunnel, and a 9-piece sculpture trail. The Museum also hosts regular traveling 

exhibits, and popular seasonal exhibits, such as chick and butterfly hatching. 

Great care was taken in designing the facility to be friendly both to its visitors and to 

the environment. Its universal design means that the Museum and its exhibits and 

programming are accessible by children in the same manner, regardless of differing levels 

of physical, auditory, visual, social-emotional, or cognitive ability. Showing the importance 

of being a good steward of the environment, the Museum facility is a Silver-level LEED 

(Leaders in Energy and Environmental Design) building, one of the “greenest” in the 

Chicago area. 

The Museum welcomes over 330,000 visitors annually, while reaching tens of thousands 

more through outreach programming, particularly into schools in underserved 

neighborhoods in Chicago and Waukegan.

Recreation 

The Grove

The Grove is a 123-acre nature preserve and National Historic 

Landmark owned and managed by the Glenview Park District. The 

Grove is the original Kennicott Homestead, a natural woodland 

containing diverse plants, trees, insects, mammals, native migrating 

birds and water fowl. It includes woods, prairie and miles of beautiful 

hiking trails. Also found at The Grove are the Redfield Estate; the 

Interpretive Center, focus of study and teaching at The Grove, and the 

1850’s School House, a Native American long house and a wetland 

walkway. Visit The Grove Store for nature and historically-inspired gifts 

for all ages and occasions including books, candles, jewelry, garden 

items, children’s toys and more. 

Each year in October, the woods and meadows of The Grove are the 

site of the Grove Folk Fest, a celebration of rural life in Glenview in the 

1850’s. Three other special events highlight The Grove’s annual 

calendar: The Plant & Garden Sale in May, Civil War Days in July and 

“The Old-Fashioned Holiday Craft Fair” in November. 

The Redfield Estate at The Grove is a beautiful, historic home located 

in the nature preserve. This gracious estate is available to rent for 

special events like weddings, parties and meetings.

Senior Citizens 

Thomas Place

Thomas Place’s mission is to serve seniors in a first class 

environment with the goal of maintaining a dignified quality of life. 

Thomas Place’s 144 apartments have been specifically designed 

for independent seniors aged 55 and older. The majority of residents 

are in the age range of late 60’s to late 80’s. There are a few residents 

in their mid 90’s! 

Currently rents range from $538 - $1030 in the one bedroom units 

and $643 - $1280 in the two bedroom units. There are currently no 

vacancies. Common area amenities include an outdoor covered 

patio which has a fire place, underground parking garage, craft, 

billiard/library and party/dining rooms. Thomas Place is located 

within walking distance shopping, dining and parks. Thomas Place 

also has a van to take residents on weekly scheduled shopping trips. 

At Thomas Place people can be as private or as involved as they 

choose. There is a core group of active, involved residents who have 

helped make Thomas Place a home.

Municipal Services 

Village of Glenview

Glenview operates under a council-manager form of government. 

The Village President and six Trustees are elected at-large (i.e. they 

do not represent particular wards or areas of the Village). A given 

term is four years and there are no term limits; Trustees may run for 

re-election as often as they choose. Village elections are held every 

two years. 

The President, with the concurrence of the Trustees, appoints the 

Village Manager, as well as members of the various Commissions 

(Appearance, Historic Preservation, Natural Resources, Plan and the 

Zoning Board of Appeals) responsible for overseeing and regulating 

different aspects of the Village. 

The Board of Trustees meets twice a month (as do many of the 

Commissions). Its decisions and policy initiatives are carried out by the 

Village Manager and seven municipal departments – Administrative 

Services, Capital Projects, Development, Fire, Police, Public Works and 

the Village Manager’s Office. Although there are Village facilities 

throughout Glenview, most services available to the public are 

accessed through the Village Hall, at 1225 Waukegan – hours are 

8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Village Services 

Glenview Fire Department

The mission of the Fire Department is to preserve lives and 

property. It does this through three functional areas: Suppression/ 

Rescue, Emergency Medical Services and Public Education. Glenview 

has five fire stations – headquarters is Station 6 at 1815 Glenview Road. 

Eighty-five fire/EMS personnel staff these stations 24 hours/day, 365 

days/year, responding to more than 7,000 calls annually from the 

Village’s Fire/Police Dispatch Center. 

PLEASE NOTE: neither the Fire Department nor any other Village 

department will ever solicit you for contributions. Should a solicitor 

ever pressure you for a contribution, be assured that there is no 

affiliation with the Village of Glenview. 

Services provided by the Department include babysitter 

preparedness courses, block party fire truck appearances, blood 

pressure readings, emergency medical services, fire extinguisher 

training, fire station tours, fire suppression/rescue, home fire surveys, 

smoke detector installation/testing, school fire safety presentations 

and Scouting merit badge programs.

The mission of the Police Department is to protect lives and 

property, enforce the law and keep the peace, through crime 

prevention, effective traffic control, social services and community 

relations. Its more than 100 sworn and civilian officers/employees 

(including those in the Emergency Dispatch Center) responded to 

more than 36,600 service calls in 2009. The Station features a large 

state-of-the-art community room, available to local groups free of 

charge for meetings.

The Annual Glenview Summer 

Festival sponsored by the 

Glenview Chamber of Commerce, 

is a major event of the summer. 

Entertainment, vendors and food 

are featured throughout the day. 

Saturday mornings - from 

mid-June through mid-October 

The Glenview Farmer’s Market, 

sponsored by the Glenview Park 

District, held at Wagner Farm 

from 8:00 a.m. to noon. 

July 4 - The Community July 4th 

Celebration, planned by the 

Independence Day Commission 

and funded entirely by voluntary 

donations, is rated as the best on 

the North Shore. The day begins 

with a parade in the morning 

and concludes with a fabulous 

twilight fireworks show at 

nightfall at the Park District 

Golf course. 

The Last Weekend in July - 

features the Annual Art Fair, 

a juried show organized by the 

Glenview Art League and 

co-sponsored by the Glenview 

Chamber held at Lyon School. 

Held the end of July - Civil War 

Living History Days, held at The 

Grove, see authentic Union and 

Confederate encampments, view 

artillery demonstrations, musket 

shooting and military drills. 

The First Sunday in October - 

The Annual Grove Folk Fest, 

sponsored by the Glenview Park 

District, is held at the Grove, 

a National Landmark. This 

exciting festival includes tours 

and demonstrations of the 

historical buildings. 

The Saturday After 

Thanksgiving - Holiday in the 

Park & Parade, the businesses of 

Glenview through the Chamber 

sponsor this family event as a 

THANK YOU to our community 

for its support. Special activities, 

parade, music and food provided

Legacy of 

Hug the Bear 

Long ago, in 1917, a man named 

Ed Jackman gave to Glenview a 

tall, three-tiered fountain at the 

very top of which was a statue of 

a bear. Ever since, the legacy 

of the bear has been one of 

community giving. 

Doing what can be done for the 

community, this spirit of giving 

back, is the inspiration of the 

credo “Hug the Bear.” 

More than embracing a set of 

lofty principals, “Hug the Bear” 

acts as a personal reminder that 

excellence requires individual 

and collective care and pursuit. 

It is this constructive pursuit of 

excellence by people who care 

that, more than anything, 

separates Glenview from 

other communities. 

Active caring is the indispensible 

core of a good community, it is a 

source of unity and pride based 

on convictions about what is 

right rather than who is right. 

The Glenview Chamber of 

Commerce extends the challenge 

to all to help uphold the high 

standards established and
