Gorton community center is the "community house" of lake Forest

and lake Bluff. Founded in 1972 in the former Gorton school,

Gorton is a lively place that offers programs, classes and special

events for all ages. over 180,000 visitors a year take advantage of

Gorton’s programs and facilities. the Gorton children's Drop-in

center serves over 200 families and over 400 children.

Gorton is where kids can become chess "wizards" or see a traveling

professional theatre troupe. they can learn creative writing skills,

attend a dance in the Grotto, learn a foreign language, become a

circus clown, or take yoga, art, or cooking classes.

For adults, there are musical and theatrical productions and

classes in art appreciation, fly fishing, photography, bridge,

antiquing, sewing, home improvement workshops, yoga and on a

myriad of other topics. Gorton is where you can attend a play, an

opera, a symphony, an antiques show, a business or club meeting,

or a wedding reception.

over 100 other not-for-profit groups representing broad community

interests meet or have offices at Gorton, including centerstage

community theatre, Deer Path art league, leaD, mothers’ trust,

north suburban symphony, lake county cares, Preservation

Foundation, aa, al-anon, Great lakes adaptive sports

association, Boy scouts/Girl scouts... and more. residents, clubs

and businesses may rent any one of eleven public rooms, each

different in size, decor and function.

Programs, facilities and operations are funded by user fees,

the annual Fund Drive, the Friends of Gorton Benefit and the

Parents Board auction. no property tax support funds Gorton’s

operations. Program information and reservations are available at

raftsmanship so elegant,

artwork becomes optional.
