<strong>Durham</strong> Lords lack <strong>at</strong>tendance<br />
<strong>Durham</strong> College <strong>and</strong> <strong>UOIT</strong> produce<br />
some of the <strong>to</strong>p provincial<br />
<strong>and</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ional <strong>at</strong>hletes <strong>and</strong> teams in<br />
a wide range of sports every year.<br />
However, our students just don’t<br />
seem <strong>to</strong> notice.<br />
Blood, swe<strong>at</strong> <strong>and</strong> tears are just<br />
the tip of the ice<strong>be</strong>rg when it comes<br />
<strong>to</strong> the sacrifi ces our varsity <strong>at</strong>hletes<br />
make <strong>to</strong> represent our schools.<br />
It takes much more than th<strong>at</strong> <strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>be</strong> a Lords or Ridgebacks varsity<br />
<strong>at</strong>hlete. Th ere long hours of practice,<br />
lost wages due <strong>to</strong> loss of working<br />
hours <strong>and</strong> diffi culty keeping up with<br />
academic dem<strong>and</strong>s.Still our varsity<br />
<strong>at</strong>hletes manage <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> some of the<br />
<strong>be</strong>st in the country winning many<br />
provincial <strong>and</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ional championships.<br />
Our school is respected<br />
across the country as one of the <strong>to</strong>p<br />
varsity sporting entities.<br />
Th e Lords just <strong>to</strong>ok home gold<br />
for fastball, baseball <strong>and</strong> women’s<br />
soccer <strong>at</strong> the provincial level <strong>and</strong><br />
golfer Will Mitchell placed eighth<br />
<strong>at</strong> the World University <strong>and</strong> Colleges<br />
Championship.Th is year was<br />
also huge for varsity <strong>at</strong>hletics as the<br />
<strong>UOIT</strong> Ridgebacks <strong>be</strong>gan Ontario<br />
Universities Athletic play in tennis<br />
<strong>and</strong> rowing, with hockey <strong>to</strong> follow<br />
next year. Th ere are also hopes of<br />
launching a fi eld lacrosse team.<br />
Th rough all these sporting breakthroughs<br />
our campus is still plagued<br />
by the major problem of a lack of<br />
student support. Angela Cull, sports<br />
inform<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> marketing offi cer,<br />
said the Athletic Department has<br />
done everything from giving away<br />
cash prizes <strong>at</strong> basketball games <strong>to</strong><br />
basketball coach Craig Andrews<br />
giving bonus marks <strong>to</strong> students who<br />
<strong>at</strong>tend games. Despite these eff orts<br />
<strong>and</strong> marketing str<strong>at</strong>egies <strong>to</strong> get support,<br />
our students just won’t bite. It<br />
makes one wonder wh<strong>at</strong> else can <strong>be</strong><br />
done <strong>to</strong> get support for our teams.<br />
It shouldn’t take the <strong>at</strong>tendance of<br />
professional <strong>at</strong>hletes <strong>and</strong> celebrities<br />
<strong>at</strong> games <strong>to</strong> fi ll the st<strong>and</strong>s.<br />
May<strong>be</strong> students are just not<br />
aware of the games <strong>and</strong> when they<br />
are played. So how about starting<br />
the school year off with wh<strong>at</strong> students<br />
love most, a big sporting party<br />
like homecoming, where students<br />
can meet some of the <strong>at</strong>hletes <strong>and</strong><br />
coaches.We need <strong>to</strong> support our<br />
<strong>at</strong>hletes <strong>and</strong> transform this campus<br />
in<strong>to</strong> a community entertainment<br />
complex, a place where students,<br />
friends <strong>and</strong> families can go <strong>and</strong><br />
w<strong>at</strong>ch <strong>to</strong>p sports in quality facilities<br />
<strong>at</strong> a cheap price.<br />
