West Suburban Community Guide - Pioneer Press Communities ...

WELCOME TO OUR COMMUNITIES!

We hope that you will find this book of great value. It contains an overview

of the nine major communities that make up the West Suburban Chamber

of Commerce and Industry (WSCCI). We have also added information

on some communities close by that have business relationships with the

chamber as well.

WSCCI was founded in 1902. The mission then is very similar as today.

This chamber serves as an advocate for business and constantly promotes

and assists in enhancing the well being of the communities that we serve.

One way we accomplish our mission is to serve your needs.

The chamber is a non-profit organization that is generously supported

by approximately 400 member businesses and organizations and

community governments. WSCCI has a Foundation that works to build

business-education partnerships and encourage workforce development.

The chamber serves as a voice of business in legislative situations,

promotes a strong and healthy local economy and diligently encourages

the major aspects of a free enterprise system.

If you are considering the relocation or establishment of a business in our

area, we believe we have what you are looking for. This area is unique in

that it is situated between the 290 and 55 freeways and the 294 tollway.

For easy commuting to downtown Chicago, you may access the Metra

at stops in Willow Springs, La Grange, Western Springs, Brookfield and

Riverside. Midway airport is approximately 20 minutes away and O’Hare

is about 30 minutes or less. Rail transport is close by.

If you want to find a tradesperson, business, real estate expert or countless

other purveyors, we have included a listing of all chamber members

within this community guide. We do hope you will frequent our chamber

membership as much as possible. Without their support, there would not

be this book and other visitor resources.

If you have any questions that remain unanswered or if you want to

know how to become a member of this chamber, we encourage you

to call or contact the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce. Our mail

address is P.O. Box 187, La Grange, Illinois 60525, web address is:

www.westsuburbanchamber.org and phone number is: (708) 387-7550.

Please come to our office, located at 9440 Joliet Road, Suite B, Hodgkins,

IL 60525, for additional printed material, maps and personalized

attention.

We hope that you enjoy this community guide. It is worth keeping a copy

in your home or perhaps in your office. If you need additional copies, we

will happily provide as many as you request.

Cordially,

Members of the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce and Industry

(WSCCI), The Board of Directors of the Chamber and the Chamber’s Staff.

major markets and excellent transportation systems, helps maintain a steady stream of

customers into the area. A highly skilled labor force, abundant energy and water resources,

established corporations, cooperative local municipalities and plenty of land are just a few of the

advantages to doing business in our prosperous communities.

The West Suburban Region is home to more than 2,800 businesses, as well as a number of

corporate headquarters. The diverse mix of local business includes light manufacturing, retail

and wholesale companies and corporations specializing in finance, medicine and applied

Our communities welcome new businesses to the area by offering a number of financial

incentives, including tax exemptions and credits, business finance opportunities, as well as a

number of incentive programs on the state, county and local levels. We also have turn-key

retail and offices spaces and shovel-ready building sites. Ask us about economic development

industry and take delight as we watch the communities of our region successfully grow into the

future!

thriving community that is a great place to live and conduct business.

Located in the heart of the western suburbs and just minutes from

downtown Chicago and Midway Airport, it is easy to “Get it Done” in

Situated upon rolling and wooded terrain, the Village of Indian

Head Park is a quiet residential community offering a balanced mix

of housing choices including single family residences, townhomes,

condominiums and rental units.

Although not incorporated until 1959, the land area now known

as Indian Head Park was very active during the early settlement of

northern Illinois. Village historical documents reference a log hotel on

Wolf Road (1833), the first school house in Lyons Township (1834)

and the organization of the Lyonsville Congregational Church (1843).

Plainfield Road, once an Indian trail, was the route of a stage coach

line extending from Chicago to Ottawa at the Illinois River. Life in

Indian Head Park offers many attributes of “small town” living. Friendly

neighbors, an active citizenry and deep civic pride characterizes

the population.

Today, Indian Head Park is a community that prides itself on be very

safe and quiet. No matter where you walk, you will be greeted by

neighbors enjoying the neighborhoods. The streets are pedestrian and

bicycle friendly, and the parks and community center a welcome treat

to all that use them.

economic and commercial area called “Southtown.” They have

been successful in developing the Crossroads Plaza which includes a

restaurant, card & gift shop, tire and lube shop, and hair salon.

Business people are encouraged to bring their new or relocating

businesses to Indian Head Park. You will have a supportive Village

La Grange’s vibrant downtown business district is made up of

neighborly merchants dedicated to offering quality products and

personal, small-town service. Each Thursday from mid-May through

Halloween, check out the Farmers Market.

Tax Increment Financing (TIF) has supported a successful Façade

Renovation/Restoration Program, an extensive Streetscape

Beautification Project and a renovation of the historic La Grange

Theater. In addition, redevelopment has enticed quality chain stores

that include Border’s Books, Trader Joe’s, Pier One, Chipotle, Starbucks,

Francesca’s, Caribou Coffee and Aurelio’s Pizza, to name a few.

Not long ago, the Village approved a redevelopment project that may

include almost 300 upscale apartments, 30,000 square feet of prime

retail space and 26 town homes on the former YMCA site at Ogden

and La Grange Road. The site is ready for construction.

Visitors to La Grange enjoy a broad variety of cuisines to please their

palates including French, Japanese, Italian, Greek, Thai, Mexican

and American. From spring through late fall, outside dining is enjoyed

from morning until night. Ambiances include cafes, beer gardens,

alfresco, fine dining, eclectic, pizza and more.

Many events are held in downtown La Grange including a farmers

market, a 250-exhibit craft show and the West End Art Festival. In

addition, the Annual Pet Parade takes place on the first Saturday after

Memorial Day, which attracts over 120,000 to the area.

West Suburban Living Magazine recently named La Grange one of

the top ten “best suburban downtowns.” Trust us – It is!

The village has a Historic District surrounding the Central Business

District. Much of La Grange’s early history is preserved in its many

finely-restored Victorian, Queen Anne, Vernacular and Prairie School

style homes. Other housing options vary, including condominium

complexes conveniently located downtown and near the commuter

train station.

With the successful conclusion of the Tax Increment Financing district,

Incorporated in 1888, the area in and around Lyons was most likely

visited by French explorer Louis Joliet and Jesuit Missionary Father

Pierre Marquette as far back as 1673. These hardy soles were shown

a short-cut that allowed them to move their canoes and supplies over

land from the Illinois River to the Des Plaines River.

Today, Lyons is a community that values high-quality development and

the redevelopment of existing underutilized land. Being located just

twelve miles from Chicago, the quality-of-life of the residents of the

4,032 occupied housing units and the merchants is always on the

mind of Village leaders.

Lyons is an excellent location for all industrial, commercial and retail

businesses. Three arterial roads [Harlem Avenue (Rt. 43), 1st Avenue

(Rt. 171) and Ogden Avenue (Rt. 34)] run through the Village, as well

as a portion of historic Route 66 (Joliet Road). By utilizing the arterial

roadways, businesses are able to access Interstates 55 and 290/88.

Lyons is very centrally located to Midway Airport (a ten-minute drive)

or O’Hare Airport (30 minutes away). Having a Village labor force of

67.4% ensures that all businesses will have a pool of

highly dependable employees to choose from.

The much-anticipated, brand new municipal complex opened for

community business on March 2009. The 43,500 sq. ft. structure

houses a state-of-the-art Police Department and Communications

Center, Village administration office, Village Council Chamber,

Community Center, and Recreation and Health Department.

New businesses are constantly coming to Lyons. Others are changing

their look or location. Most recently, Lyons welcomed Dunkin Donuts,

Starbucks, Jimmy Johns and Culvers. In 2010, a new McDonalds will

open on First Avenue.

One of the dominant sites in Lyons is the Hofmann Tower; built in 1908

by George Hofmann Jr. The eight-story, castle-like concrete structure

was the centerpiece of a large recreational area where visitors and

residents enjoyed the simple pleasures of canoeing, powerboat rides,

dancing and orchestral concerts and a beer garden.

Lyons has kept that family-friendly attitude and constantly strengthens

that spirit by bringing the community together for family events. Come

The Village of McCook was named after John J. McCook, a late 19th century director of the

Santa Fe Railroad and a former American Civil War Officer. This coming of the railroads

spurred development. Several quarries began operating in the 1880’s, attracting youthful

Eastern European male laborers. The stone was shipped on the Illinois & Michigan Canal

and later on the Sanitary & Ship Canal. In 1926, McCook incorporated as a village.

Mayor Jeffrey Tobolski and the Village Board have worked together to develop a close-knit

community. Employee participation is encouraged and enjoyed at village events.

The Administration Department is easily accessible to the residents. All inquiries can

be addressed by the Mayor, Village Deputy Clerk, the Licensing Clerk and Building

Inspector.

The Police Department has progressed from the early days, when one officer patrolled the

village on his own motorcycle. Today, the staff consists of a Chief, Deputy Chief, Lieutenant,

four sergeants, eleven officers and five dispatchers. The fleet of units is comprised of a

SUV, three black and white vehicles and one unmarked patrol car. Personnel are scheduled

throughout the year for continuous training.

The McCook Fire Department operates with a full-time staff. The Department is trained

in technical rescue, hazardous materials, and fire and medical services. Opportunities

are available for Public Education Programs such as first-aid, CPR and home-safety.

The Village recently purchased a state-of-the-art ambulance to help assist with medical

needs.

The Water Department provides water to the neighboring communities of La Grange,

Riverside, Hodgkins and Countryside (which then supplies the La Grange Highlands and

Indian Head Park).

removal are very popular.

In 2009, the MAX was purchased by the Village. The McCook Athletic & Exposition (MAX)

Center is Chicago’s first full-sized indoor field positioned under a clear-span forty-foot

roof. At 125,000 square feet, the MAX incorporates 79,000 square feet of turf, two fullsized

basketball courts, volleyball courts and a baseball/softball academy. The building is

able to accommodate soccer, lacrosse, football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, kickball,

dodge ball, etc. Competitive leagues for youth through adult teams are formed along with

tournaments, clinics and camps throughout the year. For additional information, go to the

website: www.max-mccook.org.

McCook is a community on the move. Wal-Mart purchased a 39-acre parcel for

development. The Village has welcomed many corporations, such as Fontanini Italian

Meats, Comcast and Michael Lewis, with others in negotiation. Plans for expansion of the

MAX are being considered.

“A Look at McCook” is a newly developed newsletter that is mailed to all residents.

Western Springs is a quiet, affluent village with beautiful homes on

various sized, meticulously maintained lots. Over the past few years,

many of the smaller housing units have been replaced with modern

and significantly larger housing units. The Village housing stock is

made up of almost exclusively high quality single familydetached units

ranging in value from $350,000 to $2,000,000+.

A quaint downtown district features a local hardware store, boutiques,

a gourmet grocer and butcher, and coffee and ice cream shops. Recent

additions include a fine dining restaurant, an Italian restaurant and

two wine shops.

Reinvestment in the Village continues at an unprecedented pace. In

2008, the Board of Trustees funded an accelerated infrastructure

program by issuing more than $6.5 million in road improvement

bonds. A new train station was completed in 2005, which is

reminiscent of the historic station which served Western Springs for

so many years. Also constructed was one pedestrian underpass of the

Named for a site above the south bank of the Illinois-Michigan Canal,

where a spring rose from the ground in front of a willow tree, Willow

Springs is a vibrant and growing community, with nationally-ranked

schools, proactive government, executive housing and a pro-business

climate.

Incorporated in 1894, settlers and canal workers were attracted to the

area by the economic opportunities accompanying the construction of

the I-M Canal in 1893. Many decided to stay after the completion of

the canal and the town was born. Still today, first and foremost Willow

Springs remains a village of families and family values.

The people of this community pride themselves on planned progress

and pleasant living, as they continue to preserve the small-town

charm.

Willow Springs is blessed with extensive bike trails and many acres

SHOPPING AND DINING

The West Suburban Chamber of Commerce’s communities are filled with terrific stores,

restaurants and quaint shops. If you have a need for fresh fudge or exercise equipment, a

four-course dinner or a “Chicago dog” with extra onions, or an antique or a newly painted

picture; our merchants and dining establishments deliver. If you are looking for the perfect

bottle of wine, a bag of fresh-made breads and a perfect bowl of soup, we have all of that and

so much more.

We invite you to check out the stores and restaurants on your way to the Brookfield Zoo, or as

you drive to a quiet forest preserve lake near Willow Springs. There are ample shopping options

at the Quarry Mall in Hodgkins and all around Countryside, as well as some great restaurants in

and around the Indian Head Park area.

Many publications have noted that our area has one of the best concentrations of excellent

restaurants. Try some new offerings in La Grange and Western Springs, perhaps a pizza in La

Grange Park, or hometown food in McCook or Lyons. And while you are out having fun, don’t

overlook the eclectic and specialty stores that abound in our portion of Cook County.

If you still need more places to go, we recommend that you refer to the Chamber’s map and

frequent the communities that surround the members of the West Suburban Chamber of

Commerce and Industry. They will make your search complete.

TOURISM

The hotel rooms in the communities of the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce are centrally

located in Countryside and Lyons. Close to or on old Route 66, you have a choice of the William

Tell Holiday Inn, the Best Western-Chicagoland Countryside and various other lodging facilities.

Wherever you spend your nights, you will be minutes from all of your day activities.

Year-round events compliment the seasons. Our summer months bring forth the monstrously

popular annual La Grange Pet Parade, many house walks, carnivals, family evenings in the

parks and outdoor activities of all sorts. Autumn uses the softened light and temperatures for

fall festivals, Halloween walks, high school football, bonfires and the final sales at farmers’

markets.

Winter might be snowy and cold but that makes for perfect situations to enjoy the insides of

homes and businesses. Join us for holiday traditions, sledding and ice-skating, cross-country

skiing and a table close to a restaurant’s fireplace. Spring, with its beautiful flowers, egg hunts,

festivals of roses and celebrations, is also a great time to snag some sale items in local shop and

national brand stores.

We do encourage you to stretch your legs and see the “who” and “what” that makes up our

heritage. In the vicinity of Indian Head Park, we have the Graue Mill and Museum, named for

its proprietor Frederick Graue, who began grinding grain in 1852. Today the mill is the only

operating waterwheel gristmill in northern Illinois. The Graue House, which is next to the mill,

is an operating homestead that brings the past and the present together by giving visitors an

opportunity to see artifacts from daily life dating between 1850 and 1890. The Graue property

has the distinction of being one of only three authenticated Underground Railroad stations in

the State of Illinois.

Some children believe that milk comes from a grocery store, vegetables reside within a can and

fun has to be purchased. In our Western Suburbs we have the Flagg Creek Heritage Society,

where a museum and historic home at the Pleasant Dale Park District welcomes visitors to learn

more about area history on select days and times each month.

The Western Springs Historical Society’s Tower Museum is located within the historic water tower

at the center of Western Springs. The society displays historical items and preserves the artifacts

that were, in a time long past, the everyday components that made up household and personal

possessions.

The La Grange Area Historical Society is located at 444 S. La Grange Road in La Grange. Open

from 1-4 p.m. on the last Sunday of every month, this museum keeps alive the history of those

early “suburbanites” that settled the village.

Brookfield Zoo, owned by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, is barely 10 minutes from

La Grange Park. By traveling east on 31st Street, you only need to follow the easy-to-read signs

that will guide you into the north entrance of the zoo. Open seven days a week, the Brookfield

Zoo is world renowned. Within the 216-acre park you will find 416 species and many thousands

of animals in a myriad of settings. Come to explore or relax within sight of a primate, devour

the Zoo’s delicious food offerings or shop for souvenirs for family and friends back home.

Opened in 1934, the Zoo will feed your spirit. Just as a reminder, the zoo has strollers, wheeled

chairs and shuttles for you convenience.

In our nearby lakes, sloughs, ponds and old quarries you will find a cool spot to refresh and

kick back. If you want to swim, we suggest you visit Cermack Quarry in the Village of Lyons. If

fishing is more to your liking, try Belly Deep Slough, Bullfrog Lake, Horsetail Lake, Ida Lake,

Joe’s Pond, Maple Lake or Papoose Lake. Call the Chamber for directions (708) 387-7550.

We offer cross-country skiing throughout the area, and always have a free hill for sledding.

Horseback riding stables are available in some of our communities, so ask the Chamber for

directions.

If you want to get in a quick nine holes of golf, try Flagg Creek Golf Course at 6939 S. Wolf

Road in Countryside, or play the beautiful double courses of Gleneagles Country Club, located at

13070 McCarthy Road in Lemont. Their numbers are in this guide.

PARKS AND RECREATION

The Western Suburbs offer recreation opportunities for those that want to spend a day in the

great outdoors or a few minutes to enjoy a single option. From our many choices, you might

choose to walk on one of the surfaced trails in a forest preserve, ride a bicycle on a pathway that

twists and turns in a heavily forested park or canoe on a waterway or lake. There is so much to

check out you will probably want to keep coming back.

Salt Creek, I&M Canal and “Centennial Trails” are ideal for those that want scenic routes, grassy

picnic areas or wide-open exercise spaces. Make it a point to check out our many fishing lakes

and ponds such as Bullfrog Lake, Belly Deep Slough, Cermak Quarry, Horsetail Lake, Ida Lake

Joe’s Pond, Maple Lake or Papoose Lake. In all cases, bring a camera to record the beauty that

abounds all year long in our Collar Communities of the Western Suburbs.

It is very common to see wildlife as you drive around our communities. Having so many forest

preserve acres and nature centers such as Wolf Road Prairie (a very fine birding site), and

the Little Red School House (they love to teach kids and adults about the world of nature that

surrounds us all); it is easy to become spoiled. The Wolf Road Prairie shows you what our

grasslands looked like before the settlers arrived and development followed.

The West Suburban area’s park districts also have many events, activities and holiday

destinations. Choose from a brisk game of tennis, a pick-up game of basketball, a jog around

the track or softer activities with your children or grandchildren in a tot lot. Sometimes doing

very little is exactly what the doctors order, so go ahead and “relax”.

The communities of Countryside, Hodgkins, Indian Head Park, La Grange, La Grange Park, Lyons, McCook, Western Springs and Willow Springs, all located

in the Western Suburbs of Cook County, have excellent locations to operate a business. They have very stable population bases, higher than average income

levels and excellent schools and social agencies.

If you are looking for large retailing locations on high-trafficked streets or need to lease a storefront in a strip mall or shopping center – we have many.

If your business should be located in an industrial park, near a rail line or close to a highway – we have those, too.

Call the Chamber for Economic Development information. Our number is 708-387-7550 and web site address is www.westsuburbanchamber.org.
