My mother makes a home-cooked meal everyday for my father and 94-year-old grandmother. She also takes care of my grandmother in their home...cuts and styles her hair, doctors appointments, medication upkeep and making sure she uses her walker to walk. Aside from this, she volunteers her time singing for two dierent church’s choirs and sends special cards out all year long. She is the glue that holds our family together...from regular spaghetti dinners every Sunday, to the genuine love and support she gives her friends and family. She is my best friend and ultimately my mom. My mom listens to me with caring ears and open heart. She guides me with quality advice and helps me handle negative circumstances. My mom is not only a mom to me; she is also a teacher. She is someone who provides ministry and mentors her students. She reaches out to them like her own, and they reciprocate to her like she is their real mom. She teaches Language Arts/English in the inner city schools of Chicago. She is rm but cares for them as if they were her own children. When a student doesn’t have lunch money (she pays) — she provides assistance. She pays for student graduation fees, clothing and special outings and provides them incentives to feel special. She takes and initiates special events tickets such as the Chicago Bears, Cubs game, the Chicago Bulls and music concert tickets. She also teaches them and me that not everyone is trustworthy, not to be arrogant but condent in life in order to accomplish our goals. She teaches honesty and to walk in integrity in our daily lives — reaping what you sow and to fear the Lord, the word of God and to obey God. She also teaches us to respect elders when they get older. My mother deserves this award because she is not just my mom — she is a mother to others. My mom’s famous words: “We will not accept you as you are.
