24 Hours in Arlington Heights

Dominique Modory, 8, poses for a picture by the Virgil

K. Horath fountain in Arlington Heights after a dance

rehearsal at the Park District Administration Center.

From midnight to midnight, the award-winning

photographers of Pioneer Press focused their cameras

on Arlington Heights. They shot pictures of residents

waking up, connecting with their families, dining,

working and relaxing. The resulting images can be seen

in this special section and on our Web site.

ARLINGTON

HEIGHTS:

24 HOURS

If you are reading this,

you most likely live in this

unique, vibrant town in

the northwest suburbs of

Chicago, Arlington

Heights. And you know,

as we do, that it is truly a

special place.

Though you may not

see it often, Arlington

Heights is also a village

with ’round-the-clock activity,

a 24/7 community

of homes, schools, businesses

and, most importantly,

people like you,

your children, family and

friends. From fitness enthusiasts

pumping iron

before the crack of dawn

to revelers breaking into

song in the wee small

hours of the night, you

can find something energetic

and energizing going

on at all hours all around

the town.

In an exhaustive effort

to chronicle virtually every

facet of life in Arlington

Heights — from midnight

to midnight, with all

stops in between — a

team of Pioneer Press

photographers roamed

the town on May 9, attempting

to capture the

essence of the village. As

you view the pages that

follow and our online offerings,

I think you’ll

agree that they have done

just that.

I hope you enjoy this

unique photo presentation

and will visit www.pioneerlocal.com

to experience

additional photos

and video productions

from this very special effort

dedicated to a very

special place.

The Arlington Heights

Post has proudly served

this community since

1996, bringing its unique

local focus to bear on a

community that is diverse

and dynamic, exciting and

exceptional.

Views through a Holga

We all remember being told by an annoyed parent to ‘‘say cheese’’ while standing

in front of something memorable, a Christmas tree or Mount Rushmore. The flashbulb

would pop and freeze your awkward smile on a piece of film. Your dad would

advance to the next frame. Inevitably

somewould say, ‘‘I hope that comes out.’’

In a digital world of instant pictures,

we have the ability to know exactly what

our snapshots look like. The photographer

makes sure everyone’s eyes are

open, repeating the shot until the photo

is perfect.

The Holga is a plastic camera that

doesn’t yield consistent results. With its

light leaks, poor focus and vignetted edges, it puts mystery back into photography. It

has been coveted by art photographers for those reasons. For professional photographers

who make consistent, high quality images every day, it’s nice to press the shutter

on a cheap camera and say to yourself, ‘‘I hope that comes out.’’

We decided to view Arlington Heights through the lens of these unique cameras to

give the portraits on this page a distinct voice.

For close to 75 years Berthold’s has been serving the surrounding communities in a

variety of ways. Our comprehensive inventory of trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals

will take care of your complete landscape needs. You can plant them yourself or have

our installation division handle it for you. This inventory also includes all the hardscape

items to complete the job.

Our flower/gift shop can provide lines of fresh flowers, dish gardens, tropicals and

floral arrangements for any occasion! Gift baskets too! Along with greeting cards,

candles, seasonal items and housewares are many other unique gift ideas! The recent

changes at our location on Devon Avenue, will make your Berthold’s experience more

enjoyable. We have opened up the property to make it easier to get around and see the

various groupings of plant material. More changes are coming in the future, which we

think will make Berthold’s a destination you will visit often.
