GerrY’s MessaGe
On November 8, 2010 I received the
type of call that every CEO dreads—there
was a fire aboard the Carnival Splendor and
the ship was without power adrift 55 miles off
the Mexican coast. A challenging situation to
say the least.
But within the hour, response teams
were mobilized, including a shoreside
command center staffed with 50 employees
who began working with Carnival Splendor
personnel to map out the next steps for this
tenuous situation. Over the next four days,
hundreds of employees, both shipboard and
shoreside, worked virtually ‘round the clock
to get the ship back into port. On a personal
note, I found out what the couch in my office
was for as I ended up sleeping there!
I view the Carnival Splendor fire as a
defining moment in our company’s history.
Never before in my time as CEO have I
witnessed such an incredible display of
teamwork and singular dedication to getting
the job done. Because of the efforts of
Captain Claudio Cupisti and his shipboard
team, no injuries were reported and everyone
on the Carnival Splendor returned home safely
to their families, friends, and loved ones.
It was truly a total team effort, with
hundreds of shoreside employees and
more than a thousand Carnival Splendor
crew members all pitching in to play a
critical role. From crew members carrying
guests in wheelchairs up flights of stairs and
entertainment staff putting on acoustic musical
performances in the dark, to shoreside F&B
personnel ordering supplies in the middle of
the night and the air/sea department booking
countless flights and hotel reservations,
Carnival employees gave new meaning to the
term “going above and beyond.”
I flew out to San Diego to host a press
conference and greet the guests and crew
when the Carnival Splendor arrived. As I
walked around the ship, I was amazed at
how many guests were smiling and coming
up to me to tell me about our wonderful
and caring crew. I even had a couple tell
me it was the best vacation they ever had!
(Seriously, I’m not making that up.)
And it wasn’t just Carnival employees
who showed their true colors—the U.S.
Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, and Customs
and Border Protection provided invaluable
support and assistance.
In hindsight, we learned some
tremendous lessons as a result of the
fire. I learned that our company rises to
the occasion to meet a challenge and I
witnessed the incredible bonds that are
formed during these trying times. Above all,
it showed that when you do the right thing
and treat people like you would want to be
treated yourself, even a bad situation can be
viewed in a positive light.
It’s often said that adversity brings
out the best in people and that was never
truer than during the Carnival Splendor fire.
Granted, it was a challenging situation but in
a way it was also very rewarding, allowing us
to demonstrate why Carnival continues to be
the cruise-industry leader.
I can honestly say that I have never been
prouder of our employees and I would like
to thank each and every one of you for
your efforts.
Lania Rittenhouse
Vice President of
Ana Maria Dumitru
Guest Services Manager,
Carnival Dream
i
n April 2010, Lania Rittenhouse was appointed
vice president for product development
at Carnival, which has her overseeing the
development of all guest-facing product
features and services, as well as the long-term
planning for our various ship refurbishment
projects. She also plays a key role in the development
and design of Carnival’s next generation of ships.
Before joining CCL, Lania was president of LMR
Global Consulting, a Fort Lauderdale-based travel
and tourism management consultancy that included
Carnival among its clients. While there, she worked
closely with Carnival management to develop new
guest-product concepts for the Carnival Magic, which
debuts in May.
This is not, however, Lania’s first employment with a
cruise line—she spent four years as vice president of
hotel operations at Norwegian Cruise Line, and nine
years with Renaissance Cruises prior to that. She also
served as director of tourism for the Cayman Islands.
Clearly, she brings a wealth of knowledge
and expertise to her new position here at Carnival.
wHO’s iN THe sPOTLiGHT
hen Carnival Magic sets sail from
Venice in May, her new guest services
manager will be Brasov, Romanianative,
Ana Maria Dumitru. We caught
up with the seven-year Carnival
veteran to find out a little more about
her CCL journey.
Seaview: When did you start at Carnival? And in
what position, on which ship?
Ana Maria Dumitru: I started as a trainee purser in
October 2003 and once I completed my training
aboard the Carnival Fascination, I was employed
as a proud new cadet purser on the Carnival Pride.
S: Where did you work before Carnival?
A: Before Carnival, I worked for a promotions
company that ran events for corporations like Procter
& Gamble and Coca Cola. It was a lot of fun and the
perfect opportunity while I was still studying. Events
coordination required a lot of teamwork so I learned
a great deal and it was terrific training for my current
position. I then started working on ships for a different
company, which is where I met my husband. Together
we decided to try Carnival, and here we found a
friendly, solid work environment where we felt our
own two-person family mattered, and this kept us
motivated to continue working onboard together.
S: What does being a Guest Services Manager entail?
A: As head of the Guest Services department, I am
the proud leader of a small but talented team. First
and foremost, we are here to look after our guests,
follow up on their queries and concerns, and ensure
they have the vacation of a lifetime. It’s an extremely
rewarding and dynamic role because on any given
So, how’s she liking her new role? “I’m loving it!” Lania
exclaims. “And, what’s more, I’m proud to be part of
the Carnival family.”
“I’ve worked with the teams to bring new concepts,
like the RedFrog Pub and Cucina del Capitano, to life,”
she explains. “It’s been interesting and fulfilling to work
with so many talented people and it’s a wonderful
challenge to come up with new, on-brand ideas
that make our cruise vacations even more fun, more
memorable, and that will—most importantly—resonate
with our guests.”
When she’s not dreaming up Carnival’s next big idea,
Lania can be found spending time with her husband of
22 years (they’ve been together for 32 years since they
met in high school in Germany), and her two daughters,
18-year-old Chloe and 16-year-old Madison.
As for the future, her goal is to continue learning,
growing, and finding her work/ play balance.
Additionally, “I want to help my daughters achieve
their goals, continue travelling the world—my ‘Didja’
this year is to travel to Australia and New Zealand—
and ultimately spend as much time as possible with
my family.”
day I utilise a full range of skill sets—from hospitality
and management, to creative and administrative.
S: What is your favorite part of the job?
A: I always wanted to do something that would allow
me to travel the world. As a child I thought that would
mean becoming a flight attendant because I had no
idea that my curent job existed! I love everything
about my job—there are challenges with every issue
resolved and concern addressed, but when we
address things to the guest’s ultimate satisfaction
I feel an enormous sense of achievement.
S: What do you like most about working at Carnival?
A: Carnival is a great company to work for and I think
that is because it was built by a family to replicate a
family for the employees. All crew members aboard
a ship have a sense of belonging to a great work
environment. This is enormously important when you
are at sea for such long periods of time. In addition,
Carnival is a very successful company and I take pride
in saying I work here; after all, Carnival is the most
popular cruise line in the world! And they offer endless
possibilities for career development and growth.
S: When you’re on dry land, what do you love to do?
A: I love to paint—it relaxes me—and I love to cook,
surrounded by good friends. I also love animals,
especially dogs, and would love to have one…
One day!
S: And finally, what is your “didja” for 2011?
A: Taking my husband to dinner at the Sky City
Restaurant atop the Sky Needle while visiting my
best friend in Seattle.
Carnival Cruise Lines bid adieu to Paul Zacharski, senior vice president of
Paul’s Carnival career began in 1982 when he was named controller for Seachest
Looking Back
on the Splendor Fire
The fire on board Carnival Splendor was
undoubtedly one of the most challenging events
in the company’s 39-year history. yet in the face
of unbelievable adversity, the ship’s crew rose
exceptionally to the challenge, demonstrating
incredible teamwork and ensuring the 3,200
guests on board were provided with the safest
and most comfortable environment possible
(given the circumstances, of course).
yes, we all know there is no ‘I’ in “teamwork,”
but the Splendor team really exemplified
that very fact. From preparing thousands of
sandwiches and delivering supplies up dozens
of flights of stairs, to keeping guests entertained
and the atmosphere as upbeat as possible,
the Carnival Splendor team went “above and
beyond” when it came to serving our guests—
the majority of whom were incredibly appreciative
of their efforts.
Meanwhile, the shoreside teams also worked
around the clock, making sure that all guests
and crew on board the Splendor received
necessary assistance once they disembarked
and were ultimately returned home safely. It
was an exemplary display of teamwork, indeed!
(The Carnival Splendor fire is also the focus of
Gerry Cahill’s President’s Message.)
The following photo montage offers a look back
at the challenging yet rewarding event.
Many thanks to everyone who pitched in during
“Didja Ever” zip line across a rain forest? Catch air on a wave runner?
Open for your favorite band? In December, we unveiled our “Hey America,
Didja Ever” campaign that inspires people to try new things and add more
fun, happiness and satisfaction to their lives. We want our consumers—and
employees, of course—to share, fulfill and celebrate first-time experiences in a
campaign that’s driven by the “Didja Ever” headquarters on Carnival’s Facebook
page (www.facebook.com/carnival).
We kicked off 2011 as the year of “Didja Ever?” in Times Square where we were the
official confetti sponsors on New year’s Eve. Michele Hart of Loss Prevention and
Israel Gonzalez of Consumer Sales were the two lucky Carnival employee winners
who each brought a friend and served as official Confetti Dispersal Engineers atop
the Minskoff Theatre where they literally threw confetti down to rain on the million
bystanders heralding in the New year in Times Square. They were joined by East
Coast sales team members, Jerilyn Giacone, director of sales, charter, meetings
& incentives, and Business Development Director, Tom Panici, who were each
selected for the coveted positions thanks to their 25-plus years with the company,
during which time they have been proactive members of the sales force.
Carnival Deems 2011 the Year to “Get Fun Done!”
Senior Cruise Director John Heald served as Carnival’s master of ceremonies during
the New year’s Eve festivities. One of Heald’s responsibilities was conducting the
Times Square official air-worthiness test for the confetti, which was captured by
numerous news photographers. He also stood on the main stage in Times Square
on December 31st and led the crowd in a Carnival-sponsored confetti countdown
at 10 p.m. during which a huge drop of red, white and blue confetti rained down on
the crowd. John conducted a variety of media interviews on behalf of the company
and even met with some of his blog fans.
Meanwhile, Carnival’s social media team was extremely busy capturing all the
festivities and frequently posting photos, videos and updates featuring John and all
the exciting activities on Carnival’s Facebook, youtube and Twitter accounts as well
Dream’s Shore Excursions
Inspire Food Network
Challenge Contestants
Crew on board the Carnival Dream hosted four of the
country’s top pastry chefs on a seven-day cruise that
served as a backdrop to Food Network Challenge: Sugar
Destinations. While on board, the contestants experienced
a series of exhilarating and memorable shore excursions
that provided inspiration for their extraordinary confectionery
creations. The highly popular, long-running show pits
professional-chef competitors against each other to
produce incomparable feats in their food specialty.
This episode’s competition (which fi rst aired on Food
Network, December 19th, 2010) had the chefs
experiencing four of Carnival Dream’s signature
shore excursions and then creating edible sugar
masterpieces to bring them to life.
The featured shore excursions were a Catamaran
and Snorkel adventure in the crystal blue waters
off Cozumel, Mexico; a Dolphin Encounter experience in
lush Roatan, Bay Islands, Honduras; an exotic Lost World
Canopy Tour and Zipline adventure in Belize, and a fascinating
visit to the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins deep in the tropical rain
forest near Costa Maya, Mexico. Each excursion provided
inspiration for one of the astonishing feats of confectionery
and sugar crafted by the competing chefs.
Cozumel has a number of
endemic (native) birds, marine
life and mammals, including the
Cozumel Thrasher, which is now
thought to be extinct.
The former Colony of British Honduras became
Belize in June 1973, though full independence was
not granted until September 21, 1981.
Carnival Cruise Lines’ very own Jennifer Vandekreeke, who
is director of advertising, served as judge alongside two
highly-esteemed sugar-crafting experts.
“Judging the competition was fascinating,” says
Vandekreeke. “I never knew you could do such amazing
things with a raw ingredient like sugar. It was exciting to
hear how much they enjoyed their Carnival cruise and all the
new experiences they had during their week. The hardest
part was choosing a winner.”
Roatan is awash with fantastical stories of ghosts—
or “duppees”—past. Legend has it that pirates
burying gold would kill a man and leave his body
close by to watch over the gold. The centuries-old
ghosts are now tired of watching over the gold and
will give a random passerby specifi c instructions on
where to fi nd it.
The fi rst Mayan tribes arrived in Costa Maya in
approximately 200BC. Today it’s the closest port
to access many lesser-known Mayan ruins in the
yucatan, including Chacchoben.

Though we all know the health hazards associated with smoking, it is still a popular
habit on board a cruise ship and amongst the crew. But in an attempt to help and
support those of you who have deemed this the year to live a healthier life, we now have
a “Stop Smoking” scheme. The Carnival Smoking Cessation program that is available to
all Carnival crew members, including concessionaires, at no charge. All you have to do
to get started is see a member of your onboard medical team and you’ll be on your way
to joining the 400-plus CCL crew members who stopped smoking this year.
Not sure if you’re yet ready to take the plunge and say no to nicotine? Here are some
things to consider when making your decision:
If you smoke, probably the most important step you will ever take to safeguard your
health is to stop smoking. Similarly, if any of your friends or family members smoke, you
should encourage them to stop.
Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death. Tobacco smoke contains hundreds
of poisonous and cancer-causing chemicals including arsenic, carbon monoxide,
formaldehyde and cyanide, which can contribute to your developing serious diseases
like cancer, emphysema, heart attack and stroke.
Second-hand tobacco smoke can also harm non-smokers. A common misperception
is that smoking in a different room protects others in the same house. In reality, the
invisible toxic gases from tobacco smoke typically spread throughout an entire home
harming all others who live or visit there.
While tar from tobacco smoke accumulates in the lungs (similar to soot in a chimney),
the damage is not limited to the inside of your body. Tobacco smoke damages
complexions of both men and women by causing premature wrinkling and aging of
the skin.
Smoking is an expensive habit. Smokers are usually shocked to add up how much
of their hard-earned money is spent on cigarettes each year. Each dollar spent on
cigarettes is one less dollar that is available to you and your family for fun and
positive things.
We understand that nicotine can be extremely addictive and a diffi cult habit to break.
However it can be done.
As part of Carnival’s company-wide “STOP SMOKING” efforts, Carnival Destiny’s Doctor, Jack Atad,
hosted a seminar for team members who were interested in quitting smoking. The seminar was
very well attended, with 21 crew members taking the fi rst step by having the doctor apply their very
fi rst nicotine patch.
Let’s Get Fun Done, by Robert Mack
seTTiNG GOaLs
With the dawning of a new year, many of us have
resolutions—and maybe a few regrets—on our
mind. Well, if you’ve failed or are frustrated with
the resolutions you’ve made, or didn’t get a chance
to make any resolutions in the first place, don’t
worry—it’s not too late! Every passing moment is
another opportunity to get it right, have more fun,
and do something you’ve never done before.
One of the things that happy, successful people
do well is set and accomplish goals. Setting goals
can—and should be—fun! In fact, the more fun you
have with your goals, the more successful you’ll be in
achieving them. When you set goals in the right way (and
for the right reasons), you’ll have fun and be happy along the way; not just once you
reach your destination.
When most of us think about resolutions and goals, we think about what psychologists
call “extrinsic goals,” which are goals that aren’t really all that fun, meaningful, or deeply
satisfying. They might bring you the respect and attention of others, but they just don’t
make you feel all that inspired. And they don’t feel meaningful. Common extrinsic
goals often include the pursuit of wealth, social recognition, prestige, praise, and
fame. In most cases, the happiness derived from extrinsic goals comes only when the
“destination” is reached—not from the journey itself.
On the other hand, intrinsic goals—for example spending more time with loved ones;
creating a healthier, more beautiful body, or doing something new for the first time—
are more meaningful because they are ends in and of themselves. While you might
partially set these goals to impress others, that’s not the real or primary reason you
set them in the first place. Rather, you set them because—even if nobody was paying
attention—you, personally, would feel better for pursuing and achieving them. What’s
more, because intrinsic goals are deeply satisfying, you are more likely to stick to them.
In other words, intrinsic goals are authentic goals, because they come from a desire
held deep inside you, not from society or other people.
Finally, consider making “Approach Goals” versus “Avoidance Goals.” While avoidance
goals are cloaked by words like “no,” “don’t,” “quit,” and other negative terminology,
approach goals are framed in positive terms, calling for “yes” and “I do.” For example,
an avoidance goal would be “I want to stop smoking,” whereas an approach goal
would be “I will make small changes in my day-to-day life to make me a healthier
person.” This small change in your mindset could mean the difference between happily
sticking to—and succeeding with—a goal, and failing miserably yet again.
Pursuing your dreams and goals is critical to living your happiest, healthiest, and
wealthiest life. So try something new this year, and take a positive approach to tackling
your goals and resolutions!
Take a positive approach to your
goals — say “no to don’ts” and
“yes to firsts.”
Instead of telling yourself to quit or stop
something, give yourself something to
try for the first time — whether that’s
taking up a musical instrument, learning
a different language, traveling somewhere
you’ve never been before or taking a
cooking class. The prospect of doing
something completely new will make you
more likely to work towards achieving it.
Get more fun done — have fun as
you pursue your goals, not just at
the journey’s end once your goals
have been accomplished.
Set small mini-goals that will help you
reach your larger objective — whether it’s
putting away five dollars a day towards a
trip to a new place, practicing a musical
instrument for 15 minutes a day until
you know a full song, or cooking one
new meal a week. Each of these smaller
accomplishments will help you create your
larger goal and you’ll have fun while
you do them!
Make it personal — make sure your
goals are your own, not other people’s.
Instead of a general “I want to be more
active,” be specific to what your personal
interests are — so if being more active is
your goal, join a soccer or kickball league if
you like team sports, or take a yoga class
for the first time if you want more strength
and balance training — everyone is
different, so the more personal your goals
are the more likely you are to stick to, and
achieve them, by years’ end.
