This latest book about Tibetan medicinal plants is a

significant contribution to the study of traditional

Oriental medicine and especially to the study of

Central Asian medicinal plants. The book includes four

chapters and might be called as Encyclopedia of

Tibetan Medicinal Plants. About 100 commonly and

rarely used Tibetan medicinal plants are presented in

80 monographs. The volume includes three glossaries

of botanical terms, Tibetan nutrition guide and Tibetan

medical terms. More than 400 full-color photographs,

depict macroscopic and microscopic details of all

medically used plant parts are presented in the book as

well. The book by Kletter and Krichbaum covers not

only botany, ecology, pharmacology, and

phytochemistry of Tibetan medicinal plants, but also

gave readers necessary information about rich cultural

heritage of Tibet.

Tibetan art of traditional healing has more than

2500 years of history. Medicinal preparations in

Tibetan traditional medicine are based on three groups

of ingredients: plants, minerals and animals. In this

book the authors are focused on Tibetan medicinal

flora. Tibetan medicine, as other Oriental medicines,

largely follows the principle of harmlessness. There

are very few poisonous plants used and toxins are

always removed by processing. Traditional Tibetan

practitioners are familiar with nutraceuticals; food and

spices are often used as a medicine. Diet has been an

important element of Tibetan medicine for maintaining

the good health for many centuries.

The methods of processing herbal medicines in

Tibet are similar to those still used in western practice.

Pills, mixtures, powders, infusions, syrups, ointments

and extracts are all in use, though powders and pills

rank first. Generally, all remedies are multicomponent

and never a single-plant preparation. Tr a d i t i o n a l

Tibetan practitioners used the same numerous

prescriptions for many years from generation to

generation. Unfortunately, some common Ti b e t a n

medicinal plants, such as Crocus sativus, Glyccyrrhiza

glabra, Hippophae rhamnoides, Myristica fragrans,

Punica granatum, Zingiber officinalie, were not

included in this book.

However, I strongly believe that this book will

inspire western scholars for more detailed studies on

Tibetan medicinal plants.

Krichbaum, Tibet T›bbi Bitkileri,

Medpharm Scientific Publishers, Postfach 101061, D-

7009 Stuttgart, 400 sayfa,

ISBN: 3-88763-067-X, 2001.

geleneksel Do¤u t›bb› ve özellikle Orta Asya t›bbi

adland›r›labilir. Yaklafl›k olarak 100 yayg›n ve daha

seyrek kullan›lan Tibet t›bb› bitkileri, 80 adet

monograf ile tan›t›lmaktad›r. Kitap botanik terimleri,

Tibet beslenme rehberi ve Tibet t›bbi terimlerini

kapsayan üç sözlük içermektedir. Kitapta ayn›

zamanda 400’den fazla renkli foto¤raf ile t›bbi

amaçlarla kullan›lan bitki k›s›mlar›n›n makroskopik ve

mikroskopik detaylar›n›n gösterildi¤i çizimler yer

almaktad›r.

Kletter ve Krichbaum’un bu kitab› okuyucuya

Tibet t›bbi bitkilerinin sadece botanik, ekolojik,

farmakolojik ve fitokimyasal özelliklerini de¤il, ayn›

zamanda Tibet’in kültürel miras zenginli¤i hakk›nda

da gerekli bilgileri vermektedir. Tibet’in geleneksel

sahiptir. Geleneksel Tibet t›bb›nda kullan›lan t›bbi

kar›fl›mlar›n içerikleri üç grupta toplanmaktad›r:

Bitkiler, mineraller ve hayvanlar. Bu kitapta yazarlar

Tibet t›bbi floras›na odaklanm›fllard›r. Tibet t›bb›,

di¤er Do¤u t›plar› gibi, zarars›zl›k prensibini

izlemektedir.

Geleneksel Tibet t›bb› uygulay›c›lar›

olmufltur.

Tibet’te bitkisel ilaçlar›n ifllenme metotlar› Bat›

prati¤inde hala kullan›lmakta olan metotlara benzerdir.

Ta b l e t l e r, kar›fl›mlar, tozlar, infüzyonlar, fluruplar,

merhemler ve ekstrelerin hepsi kullan›lmaktad›r;

bunlar›n aras›nda tozlar ve tabletler ilk s›ray›

almaktad›r. Genellikle tüm devalar çok

bileflenlidir ve hiçbir zaman tek bitki

preparasyonundan oluflmaz. Geleneksel Ti b e t

uygulay›c›lar› da nesiller boyu ayn› reçeteleri

k u l l a n m › fl l a r d › r. Maalesef ki, C rocus sativus,

G l y c c y r rhiza glabra, Hippophae r h a m n o i d e s ,

Myristica fragrans, Punica granatum, Zingiber

detayl› çal›flmalar yapmak isteyen araflt›rmac›lara esin

kayna¤› olaca¤›na kuvvetle inanmaktay›m.
