Policy No Nature of Policy Appraisal Consistent<br />
RO2 It is the policy of Dublin City Council to support the objectives of the Department<br />
of Environment, Heritage and Local Government in its management of the open<br />
spaces under its control.<br />
RO9 It is the policy of Dublin City Council to develop linear parks, particularly along<br />
waterways, and to link existing parks and open spaces in order to provide green<br />
chains throughout the city. Where lands along waterways are in private<br />
ownership it shall be policy, in any development proposal, to secure public<br />
access along the waterway.<br />
RO10 It is the policy of Dublin City Council to protect, maintain, improve and enhance<br />
the natural and organic character of the watercourses in the city, and to promote<br />
access, walkways and other recreational uses of their associated public open<br />
space, incorporating flood strateg<strong>ie</strong>s and subject to a defined strategy of nature<br />
conservation.<br />
It is the policy of Dublin City Council to maintain, improve and enhance the<br />
safety of the public in its use and enjoyment of the many public parks, open<br />
spaces and linkages within the city. This should apply, for example, to all areas<br />
of the Royal and Grand Canal.<br />
RO11 It is the policy of Dublin City Council to seek the continued improvement of<br />
water quality, bathing facilit<strong>ie</strong>s and other recreational opportunit<strong>ie</strong>s in the<br />
coastal, estuarine and surface waters in the city.<br />
OBJECTIVE<br />

In furtherance of Policy RO11, it is an objective of Dublin City Council to:<br />
• Establish, where feasible, riparian corridors, free from development, along all<br />
significant watercourses in the city.<br />
• Restrict, where feasible, the use of culverts on watercourses in the city<br />
• Establish a working group in association with adjoining local authorit<strong>ie</strong>s,<br />
Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government and Department of<br />
the Marine and Natural Resources to oversee the preparation of a guide on Irish<br />
river rehabilitation and a public education programme<br />
RO12 It is the policy of Dublin City Council to endeavour to make provision for habitat<br />
creation and maintenance and facilitate biodiversity by encouraging the<br />
development of linear parks, nature trails, wildlife corridors and urban<br />
woodlands.<br />
