Objectives<br />

Step 1: Introduce<br />
Ask families to state some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rules and advice that parents give to children to keep <strong>the</strong>m safe and sound.<br />
Sample responses:<br />
• Look both ways before crossing <strong>the</strong> road<br />
• Don’t talk to strangers<br />
• Wash your hands before meals or cooking<br />
Explain that you are going to watch a video <strong>of</strong> about <strong>the</strong> kind <strong>of</strong> rules <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> road that children can use to keep<br />
<strong>the</strong>m safe and sound when <strong>the</strong>y go online.<br />
Step 2: Learn <strong>the</strong> <strong>Rules</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Road</strong><br />
Show children and family members <strong>the</strong> “<strong>Rules</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Road</strong>” video and review <strong>the</strong>m. They are:<br />
1. Guard your privacy<br />
2. Protect your reputation<br />
3. Nothing is private online<br />
4. Assume everyone is watching<br />
5. Apply <strong>the</strong> Golden Rule<br />
Families will:<br />
Step 3: Think Critically About <strong>the</strong> <strong>Rules</strong><br />
In small groups, families choose three <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rules <strong>the</strong>y think are most important, answer <strong>the</strong> following questions,<br />
and <strong>the</strong>n share <strong>the</strong>ir response with <strong>the</strong> group:<br />
• Why do you think <strong>the</strong>se are <strong>the</strong> three most important rules?<br />
• What do you think could happen if you did not follow this rule?<br />
• Are <strong>the</strong>re any exceptions to this rule? If so, what are <strong>the</strong>y?<br />
• Reflect on what rules parents and family members teach children<br />
• Learn about <strong>the</strong> rules <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> road for going on <strong>the</strong> Internet<br />
• Think critically about <strong>the</strong> rules <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> road<br />
