Step 1: Introduce
Ask families to state some of the rules and advice that parents give to children to keep them safe and sound.
Sample responses:
• Look both ways before crossing the road
• Don’t talk to strangers
• Wash your hands before meals or cooking
Explain that you are going to watch a video of about the kind of rules of the road that children can use to keep
them safe and sound when they go online.
Step 2: Learn the Rules of the Road
Show children and family members the “Rules of the Road” video and review them. They are:
1. Guard your privacy
2. Protect your reputation
3. Nothing is private online
4. Assume everyone is watching
5. Apply the Golden Rule
Families will:
Step 3: Think Critically About the Rules
In small groups, families choose three of the rules they think are most important, answer the following questions,
and then share their response with the group:
• Why do you think these are the three most important rules?
• What do you think could happen if you did not follow this rule?
• Are there any exceptions to this rule? If so, what are they?
• Reflect on what rules parents and family members teach children
• Learn about the rules of the road for going on the Internet
• Think critically about the rules of the road
