James T. Wood began his 37-year hospitality career in the restaurant 1<br />
industry as a pots and pans washer. Wood advanced his career one step at i<br />
a time in the restaurant industry. In 1980 he joined the Marriott Corpora- '<br />
tion and for the next 1 1 years held the positions of Restaurant Manager at 1<br />
the Los Angeles Mturiott Auport (10 19 rooms); Catering Sales Manager, ,<br />
Group Sales Manager and Director of Sales at the Seattle Marriott Hotel '<br />
(462 rooms); and Director of Marketing for Mamott in Salt Lake City (5 18<br />
rooms), Denver (612 rooms), New Orleans (1290 rooms) and Dallas (560<br />
mms).<br />
In 1991 Wood joined The Tampa Bay Convention & Visitors Bureau<br />
as its Vice President of Convention Sales and Marketing. Wood coordinated<br />
Tampa's Super Bowl bid (200 I), Tampa's NCAA Men's Final Four<br />
bid (1999), The NHL All-star Game (1999) and the successful relocation<br />
of an Olympic organization - The International Sofiball Federation. While<br />
in Tampa, he served as the chairperson of Tampa Bay's local hospitality<br />
organizing committees for industry &ows such as the National Coalition<br />
of Black Meeting Planners (1993), Society of Show Organizers (1994),<br />
Society of Governpent Meeting Planners (1995) and the National Association<br />
of ~edical Meeting Professionals (1997).<br />
In February of 1999, Jim became the President & CEO of the Providence<br />
Warwick Convention & Visitors Bma (PWCVB). While in Rhode<br />
Island Wood led the effort in uniting and building coalitions among Rhode<br />
Island's tourism regions. Through his leadership, PWCVB developed marketing<br />
partners throughout the state with the Newport County Convention<br />
& Visitors Bureau, the Rhode Island Division of Tourism, the Warwick<br />
Division of Tourism, the Providence Tourism Council and Hasbro Toy<br />
Company. Wood also developed two new events in Providence. First was<br />
the Federal Hill Stroll a restaurant event featuring 30+ restaurants and busi-
nesses on Federal Hill and the Jack 0' Lantern SpectaculaP which now<br />
draws nearly 100,000 people annually.<br />
In addition to serving on the Johnson & Wales Hospitality College<br />
.Advisory Council, he served on the IACVB mtinati~n Showcase Committee,<br />
Providence Tourism Commission, Rhade Islqd Sports Council<br />
and the Rhode Island Tourism Development Advisory Council. Wood<br />
served as a board member for the National Governam' Association Annual<br />
Conference (2001), The NCAA Frozen Four (2000) and the Gravity<br />
Games (1999-2001).<br />
In 2000 The Providence Journal selected Jim as one of the 25 Top<br />
New Leaders for a New Century and he has received the prestigious Mary<br />
Brennan Tourism Award (2000) recognizing his contribution to the hospitality<br />
community by the Rho& Island Tourism and Hospitality Association.<br />
While in Rhode Island he eamed his FCDME (Fellow Certified<br />
Destination Management Executive) from the Destination Marketing Association<br />
International (Formerly IACVB).<br />
On August 1,2003 Wood became the President & CEO for the Louisville<br />
Convention & Visitors Bureau. The Bureau has an annual operating<br />
budget of $l2.9M and a staff of 55 employees. As part of his duties Wood<br />
has developed specific sales and marketing strategies for the Bureau including<br />
developing several successful brand awareness campaigns for the<br />
meetings and conventions market and the group motor coach market. Wood<br />
serves on the boards for Greater Louisville Inc., The Louisville Sports<br />
Commission, The Kentucky Tourism Council, The Kentucky Derby Festival,<br />
The Greater Louisville Hotel and Lodging Association, the Arts &<br />
Cultural Attractions Board of Directors and the Frazier International History<br />
Museum. Wood currently serves as co-chair for Louisville's branding<br />
initiative and is leading the effort in developing a national leisure campaign<br />
with partners from the hospitality industry, local and regional government<br />
and the Kbtucky Bourbon Association. Most recently Wood led<br />
the effort to bring the National Coalition of Black Meeting Planners (2006),<br />
the Religious Conference Management Association Convention (2007),<br />
TEAMS 2007 and the Society of Government Meeting Profes8ionals (2009)<br />
to Louisville. Wood was also instrumental in attracting the Abbey Road<br />
on the River Festival - the largest annual Beatles tribute in America- to<br />
Louisville over Memorial Day.<br />
Wood currently resides in Louisville, Kentucky with his wife Lisa and<br />
his sons Jeff and Andy, ages 18 and 16. He is active with his church, is a<br />
volunteer high school baseball coach at Christian Academy of Louisville,<br />
and has served as a scout leader for seven years.
