United States Congressman<br />
Ron Lewis<br />
<strong>Sullivan</strong> <strong>University</strong> is proud to host United States<br />
Congressman Ron Lewis as the spring, 2006<br />
Commencement Speaker. Ron Lewis has represented<br />
M+aIr;y's Second District since firgt being sworn<br />
in to the United States Congress on May Xth, iP94.<br />
The son of a tobacco farmer, Ron Lewis was born<br />
Sept. 14, 1946, in the eastern Kentucky county pf<br />
Greenup. Raised in South Shore, KY, Lewis<br />
graduated from McKell High School in 1964. Lewis<br />
now resides in Cecilia, a small community west of<br />
Elizabethtown.<br />

Lewis entered Morehead Stale <strong>University</strong> before<br />
transferring to the <strong>University</strong> of Kentucky, where he<br />
received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History and<br />
Political Science in 1969. He returned to Morehead<br />
State and earned a Master of Arts degree in Higher<br />
Education in 198 1. Lewis also attended the Southern<br />
Baptist Seminary prior to being ordained a minister.<br />
Lewis is a member of the prestigious Ways and<br />
Mew Committee and its Social Security and Trade<br />
Subcommittees. In this capacity, he recedy hoated<br />
a nationally recognized symposium in Campbdlsville<br />
to highlight that communities' remarkable e code<br />
revitalization and has traveled abroad to explore trade<br />
agreements beneficial to the CommonweaIth. He
traveled to Iraq in February 2004 as a member of the<br />
Government Reform National Security Subcommittee<br />
to awas tho progress being made by coalition troops.<br />
Lewis advocates a quality national defense and<br />
has worked in Congress to enhance Fort Knox's<br />
position as apremier training site for armored troops.<br />
During the 208th Congress, he spearheaded fbnding<br />
for numerous facility improvement projecta including<br />
con~~m of a new state of the art hmch and<br />
upgmdea to the computer training infrastructure. He<br />
has aleo beeh a consistent advocate for our nation's<br />
veterans, working hard to increase funding for veteran<br />
programs, protect benefits and support concurrent<br />
receipt. Family-friendly tax issues are also important<br />
to Lewis. In the last session of Congress, the House<br />
approved his legislation that adds simplicity and<br />
fairness to tax treatment for foster care families. He<br />
was a strong supporter of legislation developed in<br />
2001 in the Ways and Means Committee that reduces<br />
individual tax rates, ends the marriage penalty tax and<br />
eliminates the death tax.<br />
Since taking office, Lewis has been honored for<br />
his voting record by a wide variety of organizations,<br />
including the fibwing: Farm Bureau, the Christian<br />
Coalition, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, League of<br />
Private Property Rights, Council for Citizens Against<br />
Government Waste, The Coalition to Stwe Medicare,<br />
The 60-PIus Association, National Association of<br />
Manufacturers and the National Federation of<br />
Independent Business.<br />
Lewis married the former Kayi Gambill in 1966.<br />
They have two U7 children, Ronald Brent and Allison<br />

ACADEMIC ATTIRE<br />
As early as the twelfth century the first modern colleges and universities, at<br />
Bologna and Paris, were the centers of European leamiitg. Tbg usual garb of the<br />
time, for both churchmen and Jaymen, was a long gown necessary for warmth in<br />
the unheated buildings of the day. Scholars, generally members of church or-<br />
ders, wore such robes, as well as hoods to protect their shaved heads. Later, skull<br />
caps were worn on the W, and the hood became a cape that could be pulled<br />
over the head in wpleaoanl weather. The hood was also sometimes used to col-<br />
lect alms from the more diluent members of the community. As more colleges<br />
and universitiG were founded, distinctive forms of the gown and hood were<br />
adopted by their faculties. Variations indicated various ranks within the institu-<br />
tions. Strict rules were published, and sometimes tailors who departed from the<br />
authorized design were punished.<br />
The academic hat was a later development adapted from the headdress of<br />
the ordinary people. Academically was it was originally worn as a symbol of the<br />
master's degree and existed in various forms: some were round, some were square,<br />
and some had a tuft in the center. The flat, square "mortar board" of today origi-<br />
nated in Oxford.<br />
Academic costume came to America in 1754 with the founding of King's<br />
College, now Columbia <strong>University</strong>. Styles became quite varied, as they were in<br />
Europe, but in 1895 a group of American college and university representatives<br />
met to establish a uniform system of academic apparel for this country. This led<br />
to the establishment in 1902 of an "Intercollegiate Code of Academic Costume."<br />
The American Council on Education formed a committee in 1932 to review the<br />
1895 code, and it was again reviewed and revised in 1960.<br />
There are today three basic types of gowns and hoods. The associate and<br />
bachelor's gowns have pointed sleeves and are designed to be worn closed. The<br />
master's gown is designed with an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, and with an<br />
arc cut away at the front of the sleeve. It may be worn either open or closed. The<br />
doctoral gown is a full design with voluminous sleeves, and it also may be worn<br />
open or closed. Unlike the other two, thc doctoral gown is faced down the front<br />
with velvet and has three velvet bars on the sleeves. These may be black or of a<br />
color related to the subject of the degree.<br />
Of particular interest may be the colors associated with each academic pro-<br />
gram. Arts and humanities may use white, business degrees may be light brown,<br />
education uses light blue, and science, a golden yellow.<br />
The hoods worn by those who hold the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral<br />
degrees are lined with the official color of the institution awarding the degree.<br />
The binding or edging of the hood is of silk or velvet in the color pertaining to<br />
the subject area. Doctoral hoods are longer and somewhat fuller, but the colors<br />
of the lining again are those of the institution granting the degree, and the wide<br />
edging bears the color of the subject.
