A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT 

AS I WRITE THIS ARTICLE FOR THE ANNUAL REPORT TO THE DONORS of The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP), 

the assigned reading for the daily lectionary in Bread for Day: Daily Bible Readings and Prayers, is Psalm 103:1-5. My devotions every 

day include the readings and prayers from this wonderful resource published by Augsburg Fortress. 

Bless the Lord, O my soul, 

and all that is within me, 

bless his holy name. 

Bless, the Lord, O my soul, 

and do not forget all his benefits — 

who forgives all your iniquity, 

who heals all your diseases, 

who redeems your life from the pit, 

who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, 

who satisfies you with good as long as you live 

so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. 

The Lord, who crowns each of us with love and mercy, has blessed us at LTSP with your faithful support. I invite you to pour over 

these pages and give thanks to God with me and all of us at LTSP for the hundreds of supporters who know the value and cost of 

preparing the next generation of leaders for the church. As I write, the entering class has begun moving onto the campus. It is strong 

in numbers and filled with potential to serve communities of faith around the church. They come trusting that the church will be there 

for them to support them in the sacrificial and courageous choices that they have made. Many have dropped everything to prepare for 

ministry. As you may know, the gifts reported here now constitute forty percent of LTSP’s annual revenue. We could not do our 

mission without you. 

We are bold throughout the year to ask you for generous gifts because we believe in the mission that God has set before us, and 

are confident that God has benefited us at LTSP with a rich tradition of excellence, a superior faculty, and a student body that always 

renews my faith in the church. As I witness their faith, experience and dedication, I know that God has placed the future of the church 

in good hands. In this report our message is simple, “We give thanks to God for you and bless his holy name.” We do not take these 

generous donations lightly as we know how many needs there are to which all of us can give. We give thanks to God for your trust and 

faithfulness. As a school approaching its 150th anniversary, we give thanks to God, who, as on wings of an eagle, uplifts and sustains 

us through your friendship. 

It is also my honor and pleasure to announce our new Vice President for Advancement, The Rev. John Puotinen (ELCA), who is 

a veteran development executive and a wonderful human being. God has again blessed us with a stellar leader. Meet him on the opposite 

page. I ask you to offer him the same hospitality and gracious support that you have offered all of us who invite you to advance the 

mission and cause of LTSP. 

May the Lord continue to prosper our work together.

Dear Friends, 

I am thrilled to join you in service to the church and to the 

mission of The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. 

I arrived on campus at the same time as new students are 

finding their way in a new community, and I feel a kindred spirit 

with them. I know that they will be welcomed with the same 

openness, energy, and support that I have experienced as I begin 

my ministry at LTSP. 

As this new community gathered for eucharist recently, my 

thoughts traveled around the campus to its many reminders of 

the long history of the church in this place. The names on 

buildings, the names connected with scholarships and 

classrooms, and the many names listed here as friends of the 

seminary helped me answer a question posed earlier that day. 

During table conversation with new students, I was asked 

what “advancement” means in non-institutional language. My 

thoughts during the service gave me a way to speak to that 

question. 

As we come to the seminary as students, faculty, or staff, we 

come to a place not of our creation. We did not build the 

buildings, plant the trees, secure books for the library, or develop 

the history of scholarship, worship, and community we enjoy 

each day. Others did. And they did so with us in mind, with the 

intent that there would be pastors and leaders to serve the church 

and the world today. We live in gratitude for those who had the 

vision to make this ministry possible. 

We live in gratitude for you, who advance the mission of the 

seminary with your gifts, knowing that your faithful support 

serves the church today, and that it also makes possible the 

ministry that will answer the call tomorrow. 

Thank you for being a blessing to LTSP. I look forward to 

becoming acquainted with you!

Franklin Clark Fry, a graduate of LTSP in 1925, 

served as president of both the United Lutheran 

Church in America and its successor body, the 

Lutheran Church in America. 

His leadership in the ecumenical movement is 

reflected as one of the priorities of the seminary 

today. The faithful support of the members of the Fry 

Society helps the seminary to prepare leaders to serve

“I’m interested in increasing my income and helping prepare pastors to serve our church.” 

“My education at LTSP was really important to me! I’ve always wanted to give something 

back in thanks for that education, but I need the income from the investments I have made.” 

The LTSP Development Office staff regularly hear these comments, and they help to 

open a conversation which can result in increased income for you, while also helping 

to support the school that helped prepare you or your pastor for ministry. 

The following is an actual example of such an opportunity: 

A retired pastor and his spouse had faithfully given modest gifts to the seminary 

during his active ministry. In a recent conversation, he recalled his years at the seminary 

and how important the foundation he received at Philadelphia was to him as he served 

the Lord and his church. His wife had also reflected upon the important role that 

seminaries play for everyone who is interested in the future of the church. 

The couple was introduced to an easy method of accomplishing their goals. A 

Charitable Gift Annuity is a simple exchange of an asset (such as cash, stock, or even 

real estate) for regular guaranteed income for the remainder of both of their lives. In 

this case, he was 77 and she was 79. Based on their ages, they could receive a 5.9 percent 

rate of return! This was significantly more than they were getting from their CD, so 

they decided to make their gift, and by doing so their income actually increased! They 

also received some attractive income tax advantages and were pleased that ultimately 

the seminary would receive what was left. 

The pastor and his wife were delighted because they increased their income while 

helping their seminary.

over $30,000. The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) is committed to sending 

students into ministry with the lowest indebtedness possible. However, this is an increasing challenge.

Did you know that Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has a new charitable 

giving program? They are no longer matching gifts of any kind. Rather, 

eligible members are designated Choice Dollars through the Thrivent 

Choice program based on their relationship with Thrivent Financial. If you 

have Choice Dollars, we invite you to direct them to The Lutheran 

Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. 

Here are step-by-step instructions on how to designate your funds: 

1. Log on to www.thrivent.com. 

2. Sign in with your username and password or register for an account. 

3. Once you have registered and signed in, select the “Thrivent Choice” 

button, then scroll down and select the “Get Started” button. If you 

are eligible for Choice Dollars, the amount of dollars you have to 

direct is displayed in the Thrivent Choice portal below your login. 

4. In the middle of the next page, type in “Lutheran Theological 

Seminary,” in the “Organization Name” box and click search. 

5. Next to the seminary’s name, you will see a “Direct Now” button. 

You will be able to direct all or part of your choice dollars to the 

seminary. You can also set it up so LTSP continues to get your future 

Thrivent Choice Dollars. 

6. Click the “Submit” button and your Thrivent Choice Dollars will 

be sent to LTSP.
