“Schleswig-Holstein-Musik Festival” - Press trip August 26 th – 29 th , 2010
Invitation for Press Trip
The “Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival”:
classical music highlight of the Metropolitan Region Hamburg
Ladies and Gentlemen!
It was love at first sight, 25 years ago. It was then that Leonard Bernstein first visited Schleswig-
Holstein, and was completely blown away. “I fell in love with it”, he raved, and a year later, he
returned. This time, however, not as a tourist, but as a conductor. With his performance of
Haydn’s “The Creation” at the Ostseehalle in Kiel on July 2, 1986, he laid the foundation of the
very first Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival (SHMF).
Since then, every summer, world stars of classical music have come to tucked away corners to
transform renovated stalls, former barns, picturesque churches and enchanting castle gardens
into unusual concert stages. Most of the unusual locations for the concerts are situated in the
Metropolitan Region of Hamburg and the City of Hamburg itself.
Selecting a different country of focus each year plays a large role in making this happen. More
than a third of all concerts in a festival season are dedicated to the musical culture of a selected
country. We would like to invite you this year to the 25 th Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival
bringing the great Polish music tradition in all of its facets to Northern Germany.
»Poland in Pulse« – With this motto, the 25th annual Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival invites
you to join in on a journey of discovery through the Polish musical landscape. Festival director
Prof. Rolf Beck and his team will present a widely varied concert program and show Poland’s
music on the cutting edge: prominent soloists, orchestras, conductors and composers as well as
rising young musicians will shine, presenting everything from Baroque to the Avant-garde, choral
works to Chopin, chamber music to Klezmer and from large symphonic works to jazz.
The overview of figures and facts about the seven-week festival summer – with a total of 136
concerts, five »Music Festivals in the Countryside«, two Music Festivals for Children and 49
concert venues in 74 locations – hints at just how the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival
transforms the northern-most German State, Lower Saxony, parts of Denmark and Hamburg into
a musical land of fantasy.
We are enclosing our initial programme draft mentioning the main points. Under the motto
»Poland in Pulse«, we invite you to the most important multi-venue festival for classical music in
Europe and should be delighted to welcome you here in Hamburg from August 26 th – 29 th . To
participate, complete and return the enclosed fax.
historical center of Hamburg and the park grounds Planten und Blomen (Plants and
Flowers). Because of its accommodations and modern features, it was considered
the most modern concert hall in Germany after its completion. In 2005 the concert
hall, known previously as the »Musikhalle Hamburg«, was renamed to its current
»Laeiszhalle«, a name that honors the famous Hamburg ship-owner Carl Heinrich
Laeisz, who willed a generous sum for the construction a »proper place for the
practice and enjoyment of noble and serious music.« Stars such as Oscar Peterson
Orchestra have performed here for the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival. The
11:00 The Alster – water and far horizons in the heart of the city
The Alster valley is walking territory – from the city boundary in the NE right into the
centre, where the Alster lakes meet the Elbe. These were created from the 13th
century onwards by damming the river to create millponds. Today the ultimate view
of the city is from the Inner Alster and the Lombardsbrücke towards Jungfernstieg,
with several spires in the background.
Covering 164 hectares, with banks stretching for seven kilometres, the Outer Alster
is a popular expanse of water for sailing and rowing. The surrounding parks are
ideal for jogging and walking.
