Therapies and clinical support Students undergo detailed assessments as required in order to determine appropriate programmes of intervention from our experienced in-house multi-disciplinary team. This team comprises a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, an Educational Psychologist and a Speech and Language Therapist. The team also have access to a consultant psychiatrist and a range of appropriate therapists as required. Short break and respite services Barton School is delighted to offer short break and respite care services, which include planned stays of between one night and two weeks including weekday and weekend stays. • Each short break and respite service is provided in a designated area within the school. • Services include:- - Assisting local authorities to maintain attendance at current schools or colleges where appropriate. - Support to complete homework or assignments. - Continuing with any existing/current daytime activities. - Access to the extensive range of leisure and recreational facilities on site. • Children and young people have individual programmes that align with their current care and educational support plans. • Programmes of short break support can be planned up to a year ahead. making a difference Admissions process As the first step in the admissions process we would invite families and referring authorities to visit Barton School, view the facilities and talk to staff and students. On receiving a request for a placement, we assess the child’s or young person’s education, care and therapy needs over a time period defined with the referrer. In addition, senior members of the care, education and therapy staff teams will separately and together meet with parents and carers, schools and other significant agencies to gather information on the child or young person and complete a comprehensive initial assessment. This assessment informs our preparations for the new student’s arrival. Students will typically have a draft or final statement of special educational needs and be diagnosed with or undergoing a diagnosis for autism. However due to the variation in diagnostic terminology students may be diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder or autistic spectrum condition, as having high- functioning autism, pervasive development disorder, learning disabilities or autistic traits.
