HELMET RETENTION STRAPS 

There are four basic types of straps used for all of our helmets: double D-ring, slide-bar, quick-release and cam-buckle. Refer to the 

illustrations below to better understand how each works. 

DOUBLE 

D-RING 

Double D-rings are the earliest of all 

designs shown. This type consists of 

two steel or aluminum D-shaped rings 

which the helmet strap is looped 

through. One variation is Bell’s 

SoftSlide ® , which has two rectangularshaped, 

flat, stamped aluminum rings 

attached to a padded strap.

SLIDE-BAR 

Also known as a slip-bar, 

the slide-bar consists of a 

squared-off, continuous loop 

which includes a sliding bar. 

The helmet strap is looped 

around the bar and back out 

as shown. 

QUICK-RELEASE 

This type fastens similar to many 

seatbelt buckles. Once the strap 

is adjusted, you may never need 

to change it. The tongue end is 

simply inserted into the catch 

of the buckle until an audible 

“click” is heard and the buckle is 

securely fastened. 

CAM-BUCKLE 

This type is similar to the 

standard quick-release. A multigrooved 

strap pushes into a lock 

buckle providing a wide range 

of adjustment; this allows it to 

be worn with/without balaclava 

without having to readjust the 

main strap.
