SUMMARY

aſt er taking an early 14-3 lead and forcing four turnovers, Detroit was held

scoreless by Chicago in the second half and they fell to the Bears 19-14 in their

2010 season opener. Chicago opened up the scoring on the game’s opening

possession. The drive was highlighted by Cutler connecting with wR Devin

aromashodu for a 20-yard pickup to the Lions’ 38-yard line on third and 2. The

Bears advanced to the Lions’ 1-yard line before they were halted by the Detroit

defense and settled for a 20-yard fi eld goal by K Robbie Gould and a 3-0 lead. on

the Bears’ next possession, Lions’ CB aaron Berry intercepted a Cutler pass and

returned it 23-yards to the Chicago 42-yard line. a roughing the passer penalty

by Bears De Julius Peppers, helped set-up a 7-yard touchdown run by Lions RB

Jahvid Best, making the score 7-3. one quarter and two Chicago fumbles later,

the Lions took a 14-3 lead on another scoring run by Best, this time from 4-yards

out. Prior to Best’s rushing touchdown, Staff ord connected on passes of 15 and

19 yards to RB Maurice Morris and wR nate Burleson respectively which put

Detroit at the 4-yard line. on the ensuing possession, the Bears stopped Detroit’s

momentum when RB Matt Forte took a screen pass 89-yards down the sideline

for a touchdown, pulling the Bears within four at 14-10 with under two-minutes

to play in the half. an offi cial replay showed that Forte may have stepped out of

bounds on the play, but aſt er an inconclusive review, the play stood. on the Lions

next possession, Peppers sacked Lions’ QB Matthew Staff ord and forced a fumble.

Then Gould tacked on another fi eld goal as time expired in the fi rst half, making

the halſt ime score 14-13. The Peppers sack late in the second quarter resulted

in a shoulder injury for Staff ord and he did not return to the game. QB Shaun Hill

started and played the entire second half for the Lions. Both teams struggled to

move the ball in the third quarter and went scoreless. In the fi nal quarter, Bears

LB Lance Briggs blitzed up the middle and caused a fumble while Hill was trying

to complete a handoff . The Bears recovered on Detroit’s 1-yard line. aſt er three

unsuccessful tries, Forte tried to run off tackle and was stopped short by De

Kyle vanden Bosch and the Lions’ defense to complete Detroit’s goal line stand.

The scored remained 14-13 until Cutler orchestrated a 6-play 56-yard drive that

ended with him hitting Forte on a wheel route in the endzone. The Bears did not

convert the 2-point conversion, but had taken a 19-14 lead. with only 1:32 leſt

in the game, Hill completed four consecutive passes to move the Lions from their

own 17-yard line to the Chicago 25. on second-and-10, Hill connected with Calvin

Johnson in the endzone for what appeared to be a 25-yard touchdown pass, but

due to nFL’s rule regarding ‘the process of a catch,’ the pass was ruled incomplete.

Hill unsuccessfully attempted to get the ball to Johnson on the next two plays,

and the Bears held on for the 5-point victory.

SUMMARY

The Lions jumped out to a 17-7 lead, but fell short to the eagles 35-32, as a result

of a standout performance by Philadelphia QB Michael vick. The Lions had the

fi rst possession of the game, and moved into eagles territory thanks to a third

down conversion in which Hill was able to elude a sack by fl ipping the ball to RB

Jahvid Best as he ran for a 19-yard gain. The Lions advanced to the Philadelphia

33-yard line before Hill went to the end zone and was intercepted by eagles S

nate allen on a pass that was in the vicinity of both wR Calvin Johnson and Te

Tony Scheffl er. on the ensuing possession, Lions LB Julian Peterson was fl agged

for roughing the passer, which put Philadelphia in Lions territory. on the next play,

eagles QB Michael vick hit wR DeSean Jackson over the middle, and watched

Jackson outrun the Lions defense for a 45-yard touchdown, putting the eagles

up 7-0. Detroit responded quickly due to the play of Best who tied the game with

a 14-yard touchdown, which capped off a drive where Best had 64-yards on 4

carries. In the second quarter, two eagles penalties helped move the Lions into

fi eld goal range. K Jason Hanson sent a 49-yard fi eld goal through the uprights

to give the Lions a 10-7 lead. aſt er a Philadelphia punt, Best caught a screen and

raced past the eagles defense for 75-yard touchdown, upping the Lions’ lead to

17-7. Less than two minutes later, the eagles moved to within 3 at 17-14 aſt er

RB LeSean McCoy burst up the middle for a 14-yard touchdown run. Then, with

less than two minutes leſt in the half, vick connected with Jackson for a 53-yard

gain down the middle of the fi eld. That play set up a 9-yard touchdown reception

by wR Jeremy Maclin to give Philadelphia a 21-17 lead heading into the half. The

eagles scored on their second possession of the third quarter on McCoy’s second

touchdown run of the game, this time, for 4 yards. The eagles defense held the

Lions scoreless in the third quarter and stretched their lead to 35-17 when McCoy

took a shotgun handoff from vick 46-yards for the score, one play aſt er vick hit

a crossing wR Jason avant for an 18-yard gain on third and 16. The Lions went

no-huddle on their next possession and QB Shaun Hill went 5-for-6 for 83 yards

on the drive before Best punched it in from 2-yards out, making the score 35-24.

The Lions defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, due in large

part to a S Louis Delmas sack of vick along the Detroit sideline on third down.

Hill’s passing anchored another Lions’ scoring drive which was capped off with Hill

connecting with wR Calvin Johnson on a post in the end zone. Hill and Johnson

hooked up again for a successful two-point conversion, which brought the Lions

within three at 35-32. on the subsequent kickoff , Detroit went for an onside kick

and it was recovered by Lions S Randy Phillips aſt er an eagles player bobbled

the ball. The Lions did not advance the ball aſt er four incomplete passes and the

SUMMARY

Detroit could not sustain their early advantage and fell to Minnesota 24-10 in

Minneapolis. aſt er forcing the vikings to punt on their fi rst two possessions,

the Lions made the fi rst impact play of the aſt ernoon when DT Corey williams

intercepted a screen pass from vikings QB Brett Favre that was intended for RB

Toby Gerhart. williams returned the ball 27 yards to the Minnesota 12-yard line.

Three plays later, Lions QB Shaun Hill was fl ushed out of the pocket and found

Te Tony Scheffl er in the end zone from fi ve yards out to give Detroit a 7-0 lead.

The momentum shiſt ed aſt er the vikings’ next possession, on which the Lions had

forced another punt. Lions wR Stefan Logan muff ed the punt by vikings P Chris

Kluwe, and Minnesota recovered at the Detroit 24-yard line. on the ensuing play,

Favre found wR Percy Harvin streaking to the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown,

which evened the score at seven. on their next possession, the Lions moved

down the fi eld quickly, in large part due to a 16-yard run by RB Jahvid Best and a

leaping 21-yard grab by wR Calvin Johnson. FB Jerome Felton had a 16-yard run

of his own to the Minnesota eight-yard line that would’ve given the Lions a fi rst

and goal, but it was negated by a holding call on C Dominic Raiola. as a result,

Detroit was ultimately forced to attempt a 44-yard fi eld goal, which K Jason

Hanson missed wide leſt . on the vikings next possession, the Lions appeared to

have forced another Favre turnover when the quarterback fumbled and the Lions

recovered, but an unnecessary roughness penalty on Detroit LB Julian Peterson

nullifi ed the Lions recovery. The vikings proceeded to score on that possession

when RB adrian Peterson punched it in from 6-yards out which gave the vikings a

14-7 lead. The vikings held that lead until an interception by Lions’ CB alphonso

Smith helped to set up a 33-yard fi eld goal by Hanson as time expired in the fi rst

half, making the score 14-10 vikings. on the fi rst drive on the second half, the

Lions forced another Minnesota turnover when CB Chris Houston made a diving

interception. Houston was fl agged for illegal contact, and the vikings capitalized

with a 31-yard Ryan Longwell fi eld goal upping the vikings lead to 17-10. aſt er

Minnesota stopped Lions RB Maurice Morris for negative yardage on a third and

two, the vikings hastily extended their lead on the fi rst play of their next series

as Peterson broke free for an 80-yard touchdown run that allowed the vikings to

open up a 14-point lead at 24-10. as they did in the fi rst two games, the Lions

fought back valiantly in the fourth quarter. with less than eight minutes leſt , the

Lions went to the shotgun exclusively and Hill methodically moved the Lions

down the fi eld with the passing game to the Minnesota four-yard line before being

intercepted in the end zone by vikings LB Ben Leber. The Lions’ next possession

looked similar to their last, with Hill fi nding an array of receivers as they moved

the ball into the redzone on the Minnesota defense. with about a minute leſt , Hill

targeted Scheffl er in the end zone and was intercepted by vikings CB antoine

winfi eld, which sealed the victory for Minnesota.

In Green Bay, Detroit fought valiantly and controlled the ball for the vast majority

of the game, but came up two-points short as they lost to the Packers 28-26.

The Packers benefi ted from a 15-yard face mask penalty on the opening kickoff

and opened their fi rst possession at their 45-yard line. They capitalized on the

good fi eld position when QB aaron Rodgers found wR Donald Driver in the end

zone for a 29-yard touchdown giving the Packers a 7-0 lead. The Lions’ fi rst

possession featured two third down conversions by Te’s Brandon Pettigrew and

Tony Scheffl er for 13 and 18 yards respectively, before Packers LB a.J. Hawk

intercepted a pass from Lions QB Shaun Hill. early in the second quarter, the Lions

got on the scoreboard with a 23-yard touchdown reception by Lions wR Calvin

Johnson. Hill found Johnson three times for 44 yards on the drive. The score tied

the game at seven. Later in the quarter, a fumble by Detroit RB Jahvid Best that

was recovered by Green Bay helped set-up a 13-yard strike from Rodgers to Te

Jermichael Finley putting the Packers back up by seven at 14-7. The Packers forced

the Lions into a three-and-out, and tacked on another seven points as wR Greg

Jennings brought in a 17-yard touchdown, upping the Packers’ lead to 21-7. The

score was setup by a 48-yard catch by Driver. The Lions closed the gap to seven

before halſt ime due to a 13-play, 80-yard drive that culminated with Johnson

catching his second touchdown of the game. This time he scored from 21-yards

out. Hill connected on 10-of-11 passes on the drive. on the fi rst possession of the

second half, Packers CB Charles woodson made a diving interception and returned

it 48-yards for a touchdown. The play was upheld aſt er a challenge by Detroit and

the Packers led 28-14. The Lions used a balanced attack to move down the fi eld

quickly on their ensuing drive, which ended with a 39-yard fi eld goal by Lions K

Jason Hanson, taking the score to 28-17. on the next possession, Lions CB Chris

Houston intercepted a Rodgers pass at the Detroit 11, but the play was nullifi ed

due to an off sides penalty against Lions De Turk McBride. Three plays later,

Houston picked off Rodgers again as he tried to connect with Jennings. The Lions

took over at their own seven and drove 59 yards en route to a 52-yard fi eld goal

by Hanson bringing the Lions within eight at 28-20. Hill picked up 40 of the 59

yards on a scramble from Detroit’s 30-yard line to the Green Bay 30-yard line. The

Lions forced a Green Bay three-and-out and Hanson added another fi eld goal. The

49-yarder made the score 28-23. on the following kickoff , Lions wR Stefan Logan

recovered a fumble by Packers wR Jordy nelson, which was caused by Lions LB

ashlee Palmer, giving the Lions great fi eld position. aſt er advancing to the Green

Bay 6-yard line, the Lions had to settle for a 24-yard Hanson fi eld goal, shrinking

the Packers lead to 28-26 early in the fourth quarter. aſt er an interception by CB

alphonso Smith, the Lions were forced to punt, giving Green Bay the ball with 6:32

leſt in the game. The Packers relied on RB John Kuhn to burn the time leſt on the

aſt er scoring fi rst and outgaining new York, Detroit fell to the Giants 28-20 on

the road. The Lions defense opened the game in impressive fashion, forcing a

Giants’ punt. while attempting to punt, Giants’ P Matt Dodge dropped the snap

a bootleg on fourth-and-one. K Jason Hanson was successful from 50-yards out

to bring the Lions closer at 14-10 heading into the locker room. on the opening

drive of the second half, the Lions used short and effi cient passes to move to the

SUMMARY

The Detroit Lions held a three-point lead heading into the fi nal quarter, but a

Chicago touchdown early in the fourth helped give the Bears a 24-20 win at Ford

Field. aſt er forcing a Chicago punt, the Lions began their second possession on

the Bears’ 38-yard line thanks to a 19-yard return by wR Stefan Logan. The

Lions capitalized on the good fi eld position when QB Drew Stanton got into the

end zone with a quarterback draw from 3 yards out to put the Lions up 7-0. The

Bears responded on the ensuing possession with a 1-yard touchdown by RB Chester

Taylor to cap a 13-play, 76-yard drive that tied the game at seven. The play was

set up by a 14-yard pass from QB Jay Cutler to wR earl Bennett to the Detroit 22

on third-and-eight. Logan came up big again on the Lions’ next possession when

he picked up 17-yards on an end-around. The Bears defense held and the Lions

settled for a 50-yard Dave Rayner fi eld goal that gave the Lions a three-point lead

at 10-7. The Bears continued the string of scoring when RB Matt Forte outraced

the Lions defense around the leſt side for a 14-yard touchdown to make it 14-10

Chicago. Late in the second quarter, Bears’ P Brad Maynard pinned the Lions on their

own nine with 0:53 remaining in the half. on the fi rst play of the drive, RB Jahvid

Best bounced a run outside and picked up 45-yards. on the next play, wR Calvin

Johnson caught a Stanton pass over the middle and took it 46-yards to the end

zone, stiff arming a couple of Bears’ defenders on his way. The Lions led 17-14 at

the half. To open the second half, the Lions’ De Turk McBride sacked Cutler, forced

him to fumble and recovered the ball on the Chicago 9. The Lions could not punch

it in and settled for a 20-14 lead aſt er a 25-yard Rayner fi eld goal. The Bears cut

the Lions’ lead in half when K Robbie Gould hit a 54-yard fi eld goal to make the

score 20-17. when the Lions got the ball back, they moved into Bears territory

and faced a fourth-and-one from the Chicago 41. They went for it, and a bootleg

attempt was unsuccessful as Stanton’s pass to wR nate Burleson was broken up

by Bears CB D.J. Moore. The Bears moved to the Detroit 22 largely due to another

third down conversion hookup by Cutler and Bennett. on the next play, Lions DT

ndamukong Suh was fl agged for a controversial unnecessary roughness penalty

when he aggressively pushed Cutler to the ground as he was scrambling. on the

next play, Cutler dumped a short pass to Te Brandon Manumaleuna, and he shook

off a hit and fell into the end zone to give the Bears a 24-20 lead with 8:39 leſt in

the game. The Lions were forced to punt, giving the Bears the ball back with 5:17

remaining. The Bears were able to pick up three fi rst downs, which enabled them
