Eric Tom named IGT’s EVP of sales and

marketing for North America

In July, Eric Tom joined

IGT as its new executive

vice president of sales

and marketing. Tom

comes with 20 years of

experience in executivelevel

positions at large

the U.S., Europe and Asia.

fill the newly-added position of chief

technology officer. Satchell comes

It’s go time!

sbX Floor Manager, the industry’s

first G2S game management solution,

received approval by the Nevada

Gaming Control Board in September

2008. Following this milestone, IGT

delivered the game-changing sbX Tier One package. The package

combines sbX Floor Manager with

the flexibility of IGT’s AVP ® models

and access to the IGT game library.

sbX Floor Manager revolutionizes the

game theme conversion process by

allowing you to change and configure

games in real time, driving player

loyalty and decreasing associated

This package is an all-inclusive,

low-risk, lease-based bundle that

comes with consultation from IGT

Professional Services. The IGT game

library is the industry’s largest GSAcompliant

library. New themes are

added to the game library each month

and delivered as part of the package.

First sbX Tier One package pilot

installation at Ameristar

In mid-March, this pilot at

Ameristar in St. Charles, MO

launched as a prelude to commercial

installations. IGT completed testing

and validation of the entire order and

installation process for the industry’s

first G2S game management solution.

AVP ® machines, including 40 G20

machines, 10 AVP ® TrimLine machines

and 36 MLD ® machines, featuring

IGT’s patented Multi-Layer Display ®

technology on REELdepth games.

Second sbX Tier One pilot live

at Barona

In May, IGT continued to validate

the order and installation process,

and also gained valuable customer

feedback on the industry’s first G2S

game management solution. “We look

to this evolution of the server-based

gaming solution as another step in

our continued testing partnership

with IGT,” said Chuck Hickey, vice

president of slot operations at Barona

in San Diego, CA. “We hope that the

operational and regulatory input we

have shared with IGT is as valuable

to them as the chance to be on the

forefront of this long-awaited next

phase of the gaming floor of the future

has been to us.”

As part of the Tier One package,

sbX Floor Manager is live on 49

machines at Barona, including 29

AVP ® TrimLine machines, 10 G MLD ®

machines and 10 S MLD ® machines.

First commercial agreement of

sbX Tier One at Imperial Palace

In May, IGT obtained a signed

contract to install sbX Tier One at

Imperial Palace Casino Resort & Spa

in Biloxi, MS. This includes sbX Floor

Manager, with access to over 100

themes in IGT’s game library.

The importance of GSA and IGT’s involvement

IGT is the thought leader

when it comes to the movement

towards open protocols and the

collaboration with the Gaming

Standards Association (GSA). IGT’s

involvement with the GSA is an

example of the importance of

widespread adaptation of open

protocols for the industry.

“We stand behind open in our

actions,” said Rich Schneider, EVP,

of Gaming Products and an original

founding member of GAMMA

(GAMing Manufacturers Association,

predecessor to the GSA). “IGT is

a major contributor of technical

resources within the GSA and

collaborated to create the open


“Helping to create the Game-to-

System (G2S) protocol was IGT’s first

priority when we rejoined the GSA,”

said Adrian Marcu, VP, architecture

and GSA board of directors member.

IGT saw the value and importance

of the work so we committed a

great deal of resources to it. In all,

we authored over 50 percent of the

significant classes.”

The G2S classes IGT developed

then had to be approved by the

GSA community as a whole. The

final protocol was the result of

many meetings and many revisions,

according to Marcu.

Why is IGT committed to open?

“The open network is the basis

for the future of our technology

and our industry,” said Marcu. “IGT

implements the protocol cleanly

between the client and the system.

We don’t cloud the process with

unnecessary devices. Our systems

are built to be a genuine

representation of the open network

in the purest sense.”

“Once the open infrastructure

Beverage on Demand, a

third-party application created

by Las Vegas Gaming, Inc. (LVGI)

provides an example of how open

applications plug into sbX Media

Manager (see page 41) to display

on the Service Window. Because of

the open protocols, integration was

seamless and efficient.

The lowdown

“Customers need to really

understand the differences in what’s

available,” said Marcu. “There are

numerous options and protocol

interpretations emerging in the

market but they are not all equal.

Selecting a server-based system

is a decision with long-reaching

impact. Cost, both direct and

indirect, flexibility and technical

strengths and weaknesses must all

be considered. Another thing is

inclusiveness. IGT has carefully and

deliberately developed its serverbased

products in the truest, most

inclusive way possible. Our system

allows all other manufacturers to

communicate with it, free of any

alliances. I can only hope that stays

true for other systems providers.”

The three P approach

How the right people, processes and

products are improving Global Support


It’s been an important year for IGT’s service and

support teams. A very customer-centric approach

has prompted numerous operational improvements,

and the preliminary results are promising. Slot Line ®

sat down with IGT Director of Global Support, Sean

Sauter, to discuss some of the biggest changes and to

look ahead at what’s next.

Slot Line ® : You came into this role and immediately

threw the old playbook out the window. Why?

Sean Sauter: I had been involved with IGT services

for a long time when I was given the opportunity to

come into this role. We have a good group of people,

but we weren’t setting them up for success. And as

a result, our customers suffered. The first thing I did

was get the group together and say, “Let’s rethink

everything. Starting now, our internal and external

customers are at the center of everything we do and

every change we make.” The ideas started flowing


My personal philosophy is you have to put

together the right people, processes and products.

Each is a stepping stone to the next. Only when you

have all three implemented correctly can you make

the kind of significant improvements we’re striving for.

SL: OK, let’s start with people. Does this tie in with the

Global Support Center’s new team?

Sauter: It does. When I came in, I noticed we were

asking the first-level people to be the masters of all

products. Since these are highly complex systems,

this didn’t make a lot of sense to me and it wasn’t

benefiting our customers. We ended up being a

routing center and not a solution center.

The Global Support Center’s first level is now

managed by Richard Marx, a true call center

professional with years of casino operations experience.

Richard has begun to put the metrics in place to identify

gaps in our business and ultimately put good solutions

to work. The people on Richard’s team will know how

to ask the right questions so they can understand the

problem and respond correctly the first time. And if

the issue requires an expert, the customer is quickly

matched with the right second-level resource.

Sean Sauter, IGT director of global support, puts the

customer first.

Our second level of support consists of two

highly-specialized groups: the Applications Support

and Field/Systems Support teams led by Thuy

Cao and Dwaine Balius, respectively. The secondlevel

teams work very closely with the first-level

responders to share knowledge and expedite service.

The Applications Support group focuses on the

operational aspects of IGT products: marketingrelated

questions, accounting-related challenges,

etc. The Field/Systems Support team focuses on the

technical aspects of supporting IGT products and

their integration to non-IGT technology like Microsoft,

Marathon or VMware. Each team has the expertise

necessary to address any issue.

SL: Have the new teams implemented new

processes too?

Sauter: Our processes were old and didn’t align

with the needs of our customers. We streamlined

everything from incident severity and priority levels, to

the escalation processes that move them through the

organization. Additionally, we put better processes in

place around transitioning customers from installation

to ongoing support.

SL: And that leads us to products.

Sauter: Yes, once we got the people and processes in

place, we focused on the products that tie everything

together. One of the first things we looked at was the

remote access product we were using to troubleshoot

and monitor our customers’ systems. SecureLink, our

new, preferred tool, provides us instant access to our

customers’ systems. SecureLink is a simple, yet secure,

product that doesn’t require a system engineer for

setup and follows every required regulatory security

model. Because of how the virtual support network is

configured, we spend less time connecting and more

time with our customers. So far, customer feedback

has been great.

SL: How does the Global Support Center’s new

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system

work into this?

Sauter: Replacing Clarify with the new CRM system

was our product change. Our new Service Tickets

system is much easier to use than Clarify and

improves the incident and service request process.

When completed, it will be tightly integrated with

our SAP and telephony systems so it provides us a

comprehensive 360-degree view of our customers that

includes their games, systems and support profiles.

Now that we have greater access to data, we can

measure, analyze and react quickly to customer and

product-related trends.

SL: What’s next?

Sauter: More self-service options. One thing we

have coming up is a new knowledge base system to

better distribute information to our customers via the

Web. It’s a company-wide effort and, when it’s ready,

customers will be able to access an unprecedented

amount of information on IGT.com without having to

pick up the phone. People are becoming more and

more tech savvy and we want to give them tools to

become more self-sufficient with our products. We’ll

have more details in the coming months.

Really, our work will never be done. The Global

Support team will always be looking for ways

to improve our customers’ experience. We are

completely committed to their satisfaction and hope

“Roulette Evolution is one of the hottest games

in the building,” said Phil Trofibio, Motor City Casino

Hotel vice president of slot operations. “We are wildly

ecstatic about the game’s performance on our floor.”

Roulette Evolution , the first game released for

the M-P Series setup, is now approved for a majority

of jurisdictions in the US and Canada. The positive

response to the game by players is changing the

way many operators’ view the multi-player electronic

gaming market.

Open since 1999, Motor City Casino Hotel in

Detroit offers a wide variety of slots and live table

games. Executives at the property had initial concerns

that Roulette Evolution might pull players away from

their live table games. Eight months after the go-live

date, those concerns never materialized.

“We’re clearly seeing a younger demographic

than our typical slot player playing this game. Most

are similar in age to our table games players,” added

Trofibio. “But we’ve experienced no draw down from

our table games.”

Although not the first to deliver a multi-player

product to the marketplace, IGT spent extra time

developing the best possible result. “We waited

until we knew we had a superior product,” said Tim

Richards, IGT director of table games. “Our customers

want the best. And we worked until we got there.”

With 850 slots, 38 table games and live poker

on the casino floor, River Cree Resort and Casino in

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, taps into a robust locals

market. They were looking for the right product when

they installed Roulette Evolution in March. “We

previously had a competitor’s product on the floor,”

said Bob Arnett, manager of casino programs for the

Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC). “It

was nice looking but it just didn’t attract the

game play.”

Each year more than two million guests visit

Casino Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada. The property

features 791 slot machines and 35 table games. They

added the Roulette Evolution game to the mix last

November. “We have several years of experience,

and limited success, with other electronic table game

products,” said Elliott Daradich, director of product

development for Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation.

“Roulette Evolution is the most successful e-table

product in our product offering to date, and it

continues to exceed our expectations.”

There are many factors that determine the success

of an electronic multi-player game – math, graphics,

comfort, ease of wagering and more. It involves

much more than simply converting a live game to

its electronic counterpart. “Developing games for

the M-P Series allowed us to add improvements

in wagering convenience and customer comfort not

found in a traditional scenario,” Richards said.

The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi was the M-P

Series Roulette Evolution test site for the Mississippi

Gaming Commission in May and June of this year. By

mid-May, Slot Operations Manager Tarzan Treadway

was already impressed. “We looked forward to having

these games installed, as we are always looking to get

the newest and most exciting games” he said. “The

numbers have started out strong.”

Treadway said he believes several factors are

impacting the popularity of the game: the regular

pace of the electronic version, the ease of placing bets

on the touchscreen video monitor and the ability to

learn the game without the intimidation factor of a live

table game.

Another reason often cited for the success of the

Roulette Evolution game: it creates an experience

bridge by bringing traditional table games players,

slot players and younger players familiar with

electronic games together on one game. They may

enjoy playing for different reasons, but this game

brings them all to the table.

“It appears Roulette Evolution has done exactly

what we had hoped,” said Steve Lautischer, AGLC

manager of gaming products. “It has validated

consumer acceptance of electronic versions of table

games, while maintaining volumes at the traditional

tables. It bodes well for our market’s continued

product-mix diversification.”

If operators were unclear about whether the

market is ready for M-P Series electronic multi-player

products, the success of Roulette Evolution is making

it clear. The proof is in the numbers.

Europe over 60% market share within the group.

Turning green ideas into action

Saving water and electricity at IGT’s Reno


After more than ten years of implementing green

initiatives, IGT’s Green Team is still looking for new

ideas to make the company more environmentally

friendly. IGT recently implemented two significant

projects at its Reno headquarters with the goal of

saving large amounts of water and electricity. IGT

now uses reclaimed water for its landscaping irrigation

and has implemented a virtual server solution in its

data center.

These projects illustrate how IGT turns great green

ideas into action, making things happen for the good

of the environment with minimal impact on the bottom

line. It’s good for the company, the community and

the planet.

Saving 600 swimming pools full of water

It just makes sense to save water when you live

in a desert area. For that reason, this spring IGT

transitioned the landscaping irrigation system at its

Reno headquarters from the city water supply to the

county’s reclaimed water system. The company did

initial testing to verify the system would have sufficient

water pressure and that no other problems existed.

IGT removed the irrigation system from the city water

source shortly after those tests, replacing millions of

gallons of fresh water that would otherwise be used.

“The project will keep us from using approximately

15 million gallons of fresh water per year,” said John

Butterfield, IGT Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.

“That’s enough to fill the average backyard swimming

pool 600 times. We’re excited we were able to make

this happen.”

The company’s next water-saving initiative will

focus on reducing water usage inside the Reno facility,

starting with restroom fixtures.

What if you could take 47 cars off the road?

In its Reno data center, IGT implemented a virtual

server solution. A typical computer data center has

racks full of computer servers. Each server is usually set

up to run only a few computer software applications.

With this solution, many virtual computers run on one

physical machine. This means one computer is able

to do the work of many. More applications can run on

one server, making it possible to reduce the number

of computers in the data center with little to no

impact on the end user. Besides the obvious electricity

savings due to fewer servers in the data center, the

new configuration emits less heat, resulting in lower air

conditioning usage.

It’s estimated that the project will save

approximately 372,000 Kilowatt Hours annually. That

translates to a savings of 280 tons of carbon emissions,

equivalent to taking 47 cars off the road. That’s enough

electricity to power 41 homes.

NV Energy recognized IGT for its reduction in

energy usage, and IGT received a rebate as part of NV

Energy’s Sure Bet energy savings program.

Aaron Thomas, IGT Administrator of Systems and

Applications, spent three months planning, preparing

and implementing the overall solution. “Anytime NV

Energy can give IGT a check instead of the other way

around is a good thing,” he said. “To be part of the

process that got us that recognition makes me feel

really good.”

Thomas credited IGT’s internal developers,

application support owners, and its Network team for

a lot of hard work. “Without their help I could not have

completed the project,” he said.
