<strong>Pre</strong>-<strong>Pubescent</strong> Anxiety<br />

One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most dishearten<strong>in</strong>g aspects <strong>of</strong> folkloristics, <strong>the</strong> scientific study<br />
<strong>of</strong> folklore, is <strong>the</strong> persistent lack <strong>of</strong> analysis or <strong>in</strong>terpretation. It is not just<br />
popularizers who churn out anthology after anthology <strong>of</strong> "texts only"<br />
without attention to context or possible mean<strong>in</strong>g(s) <strong>of</strong> such texts, but <strong>the</strong><br />
academic folklorists <strong>the</strong>mselves, who despite pretentious def<strong>in</strong>itional<br />
debates about <strong>the</strong> wisdom <strong>of</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g to use <strong>the</strong> term "folklore" or exaggerated<br />
claims <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> report<strong>in</strong>g folklore as "performed"even<br />
to <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> call<strong>in</strong>g this approach "performance <strong>the</strong>ory"-what<br />
exactly is <strong>the</strong> "<strong>the</strong>ory" supposedly underly<strong>in</strong>g "performance <strong>the</strong>ory"???do<br />
little more than report folkloristic texts totally devoid <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> slightest<br />
h<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> thoughtful commentary. Yes, certa<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>the</strong> legitimate concern for<br />
performance has resulted <strong>in</strong> more accurate report<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> texts, but it is<br />
none<strong>the</strong>less hard to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong>stances where such <strong>in</strong>creased accuracy has<br />
yielded actual <strong>in</strong>sights with respect to <strong>the</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g or significance <strong>of</strong> a folkloristic<br />
event.<br />
I would like to illustrate this disappo<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g facet <strong>of</strong> folkloristics by<br />
exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g one s<strong>in</strong>gle traditional ritual found <strong>in</strong> American folklore. (It has<br />
also been reported <strong>in</strong> Newfoundland [Hiscock 1996].) After survey<strong>in</strong>g what<br />
little is known about <strong>the</strong> ritual, I will propose an <strong>in</strong>terpretation <strong>of</strong> it<br />
which I believe will make perfectly clear what <strong>the</strong> ritual is all about.<br />
In 1976, <strong>Mary</strong> and Herbert Knapp, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir anthology <strong>of</strong> American children's<br />
folklore, devote a whole paragraph <strong>in</strong> a general discussion <strong>of</strong> what<br />
<strong>the</strong>y term "Scaries" to <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g item:<br />
"One child told us she was always too chicken to summon <strong>Mary</strong><br />
Worth. She said, 'I knew I'd really be scared.' And really be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
scared is no fun.<br />
