Unity Sports Events is a new series of individual non-official Special Olympics

competition activities. Stemming from the Special Olympics unified Sports ® program,

Unity Sports Events provides an opportunity for internationally renowned

sports and entertainment personalities and fans to be paired up with Special

Olympics athletes in a series of competitive events. These exhibition activities

are incorporated in most of the official sports events at Special Olympics such as

the world games and are open to the public.

Unity Sports Events are designed to help foster a relationship of respect, acceptance

and camaraderie among all participants. The goals of Unity Sports Events are:

1. Promote the dignity and ability of people with intellectual disabilities

through “unified” sports and showcase the incredible impact of having people

with and without disability play on the same playing field;

2. Create unique and interactive opportunities for Special Olympics athletes

and key constituents;

3. Conduct all sports events in a dignified, professional and an entertaining

manner and build impactful teachable moments for participants and

spectators alike; and

4. Foster new friendships and create real-life stories that will last a lifetime

for each unity Sports participant.

The 2010 Special Olympics Unity Cup

On july 3, 2010, the first-ever Special

Olympics unity Cup presented by

Coca-Cola took place during the fIfa

world Cup in Cape Town, South africa.

Celebrities, soccer legends and even the

president of South africa, jacob Zuma,

took to the field alongside 16 Special

Olympics athlete teammates that hailed

from all over the world. The two

teams—named “Special Stars” and

“Happiness united” —enjoyed a

20-minute match on the fIfa world

Cup stadium pitch, which fittingly

ended in a 2-2 draw. The Special

Olympic unity Cup presented by

Coca-Cola represented a compelling

vision of dignity, empowerment and

inclusion—a vision for the whole

world to embrace.
