Session Description
Throughout your career and life you will be faced
with decision after decision:
Should I go into private practice, or stay in
academics?
Where should I live?
Where should I work?
How much do I want to work, and what do I
want to do with the rest of my time?
Should I buy a house or should I rent?
When (if ever) should I have children? How
many should I have?
How can I decide which things make sense
for me to get involved with? How can I say
no to those things which don’t make sense for
me?
When do I want to retire? What will I do after
retiring?
Leo will show you how to get clarity on the right
course of action, and how to get the alignment
you need to make it happen.
TOOLS FOR SUCCESS SESSION IN
REVIEW: (JANUARY 20, 2010)
JERRY R. BENSON, PH.D.
“Interest Based Negotiation: Letting Them
Have Your Way (For Their Reasons)”
Jerry R. Benson, PhD, Chief Operating Officer of
UTA presented an informative and practical
workshop on interest based negotiation, starting
with the basics of interest based negotiation, and
concluding with a role-playing exercise and discussion.
Key take-home messages:
Be prepared
Know what you want and what your negotiating
partner wants
Think of the other party as a partner rather
than an adversary
Know your alternatives if the negotiation fails
(BATNA: best alternative to a negotiated
agreement) status quo or impasse procedure
Separate the people from the problem
Focus on interests and not positions
Use mentors to help identify your interests
and those of your partner
Peer mentors are great for role play
More senior mentors may have insight
into partner’s interests
Create and claim value
Joint collaborative problem solving
Invent options for mutual gain—and make
the gain clear
Know who the true decision maker is
Understand and control the negotiating environment
An excellent source book on interest based negotiation
is Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement
Without Giving In, by Fisher and Ury. A
summary of the book provided by Dr. Benson
can be found at http://medicine.utah.edu/wim/.
To gain some insight on the “what you want” side
of the equation, join us at one of two sessions in
positions in academic medicine and dentistry
former deans, 90 department chairs, 30 center
or institute directors, and 70 senior dean's staff.
Dr. Digre’s enthusiasm for her ELAM experience
has led to a commitment by the University
of Utah SOM’s leadership to nominate women
faculty every year, a level of commitment made
by few academic medical centers, with Monica
Vetter, PhD enrolled as our eleventh fellow in
2009-10. Utah ELUMS now provide strong
leadership throughout the School of Medicine,
and will be highlighted in our E-Newsletter in
future issues.
