Hi Perth Chapter HOG
Again, unfortunately we open our message with
condolences to the members of the Perth Chapter
HOG who recently had lost family members, our
thoughts are with you.
There was great representation of members at
the recent 110th celebrations in Williamstown,
with lots of achievements celebrated the major
one being first timers crossing the Nullabor and
back. It is a huge effort and we are sure you will
keep the memories with you for a long time.
Perth Chapter HOG are well on the way to
planning what is looking like a memorable 2014
Hello HOGgies!
Well, by the looks of the weather these past few days
and the dropping temperatures, that Summer has come
to an end. But unlike the Northern Hemisphere, that
doesn’t mean super cold weather, just weather that
may be a bit more pleasant to ride in and not having the
threat of dehydration and sun stroke. As always though,
with the change in weather means another check of the
bikes. I’m sure our Safety Officer would have something
to say about this subject.
Our AGM has as you know taken place and as usual it
was a jovial event with many jokes and stories to go
around. Our committee retained a great deal of our “old
faces” with Ian McKay, Tracey Versace, and Selena Wood
retaining their positions. Cathy Gomboc and Paul Faint
have officially be “sworn in” to their duties as Secretary
and Treasurer respectively. And finally we welcome Alan
Peters for stepping up into Activities and following very
close voting Barry Hastie as our Assistant Director.
Speaking of the AD position, I would like to thank Clive
Snowden and Ralph Chadwick for stepping out on stage
to express their desire and interest in that position.
Hopefully we will see you guys again putting your hand
up for a position in the club. Lastly I would like to extend
a sincere thank you from myself and on behalf of the
State Rally, Fraser Motorcycles is pleased to be
part of this event and and look forward to sharing
details with you once they are confirmed.
The 110th Milwaukee celebrations are looking
like having a large contingent from Perth Chapter
HOG attending, we look forward to hearing about
your adventures upon your return.
Dont forget to call in and see the latest
merchandise and to book your bike in for a winter
safety check or service.
Ride safe
Rob and the team, Fraser Motorcycles, Perth
Director ’s
Cut
club and committee to Willy Wood and Dave Edmeades
for their long dedication to the committee and club.
Their decision to step down must have been a tough
one, knowing their dedication to the club (between the
two of them there is almost 15 years of experience!) but
they were willing to give others “a go” at helping the club
grow!!!
On a final note, we will be having the WA HOG State
Rally on the Labour Day Long Weekend March 1-3, 2014.
Mark, circle and highlight those dates on your calendars
folks as we will be trying to make this one as successful
as our rally in Augusta in 2010 (yes I know that will be
a hard task as that one was a great rally!!). Planning
will be underway and March 2014 will be upon us very
quickly!!! Further details will be released once planning
has been confirmed.
So enough from me. Enjoy the latest
edition of the HOGWest Newsletter
and see you all out there enjoying the
weather.
Keep your knees in the breeze and the
shiny side up.
Tracey ‘Cupcake’ Versace
Hi all
Hi Hogettes
We had an eventful start to March with
Fraser’s Open Day, Membership Renewal
Day and our Annual General Meeting. It
was great to see so many members renew
on that day and as Cath Gomboc pointed
out, the date was eerily coincidental with
our chapter number 9/3/13.
Fraser’s Open Day was a great success with
our members displaying their pride and joy.
Some even won! Well done Paul, Clive,
Willy Wood and Ralph.
Our AGM was a full house event and many
committee members re-nominated
for their positions. We had a few
new nominations (Spike as Activities
Officer, Chris Lawson as Property
Officer and Willy Wood to Fines
Master). We say farewell for now to
Warrigal as Activities Officer and Willy as
Assistant Director and I would personally
Firsty sincere apologies for the lateness of this edition of the
magazine, I had a couple of arguements with technology
recently (including completely wiping my hard-drive) and
just when I thought it was safe to try and produce this again
I accidently knocked my laptop and found that maybe apple
(the fruit) may bounce a bruise an apple laptop just falls
and smashes the screen.
To ensure you get your magazine I have pulled together
some of the information that had been sent to me, and will
produce a bumper issue next time. Our IT guys at work
have just above recovered all my emails and files.
We have a lot of fun stuff in the next edition, so please, I
promise I will try not to smash my laptop or hit the reset
button again, keep the articles and photos coming.
Again, thanks everyone for your continued support and
encouragement with the magazine, without your stories
and photos it does make it hard. I appreciate the time and
effort you all put in to
make this work....
Hugs
Karen
like to thank them for their tireless efforts in
their previous positions. They both worked
extremely hard and are very committed
to our chapter, they will be missed. The
Assistant Director position was hotly
contested by BBB, Clive and Ralph. It was a
hard fought race with BBB pipping Clive and
Ralph at the post. So welcome, Barry and
Alan, I look forward to listening to your ideas
of how to make our chapter even better.
Thank you also for supporting me in
continuing with the LOH Officer role.
Safety
Stewart Warne
Hi All
You can only “Live to Ride” if you
keep yourself safe and your motorcycle
in top condition!
Your safety is our primary concern.
Period. Bikes can be replaced, but you can’t.
Here’s some tips that cover
getting your bike ready for the ride
Of course, always refer to your owner’s
manual for specific instructions.
Safety Officer
Stew
Pre-Ride Checklist
This pre-ride checklist - called T-CLOCK - is included in
many rider-training manuals..
• T - Tires and Wheels:
Your tires are the only thing between you and
the road. Check your overall tire condition
regularly, looking for tread wear, bulges,
weathering, uneven wear and other problems.
Regularly check your air pressure, spokes, rims
and wheel bearings. Your tires are not the place
to save money when you’re talking about your
safety.
• C - Cables and Controls:
Check your throttle, clutch and brake linkages for
wear and smooth operation. Also check the
operation of your shifter, your brakes and the
proper operation of your kill switch.
FIRST AID BUM BAG
CONTENT LIST:
· Wound Dressing No 13 x 1
· Bandaids Plastic 20box x 1
· Shock Blanket x 1
· Sodium Chloride 15ml x 2
· Eye Pad Dressing Sterile x 2
· Micropore Tape 1.25cm X 9m x 1
· Conforming Bandage 5cm x 1.5m x 1
· Heavy Crepe Bandage 10cm x 1.5m x 2
· Triangular Bandage Non Woven x 1
· Combined Dressing 10cm x10cm x 1
· Non Adhesive Dressing 7.5cm x 5cm x 1
• L - Lights and Electronics:
Check your battery regularly as well as the wiring
in general. Also check your switches, lighting and
the operation of your horn. Keep extra fuses and
bulbs handy, just in case.
• O - Oil and Fuel:
Look for fluid leaks, keep an eye on your oil
level (check with bike upright with the engine
cold), and regularly inspect your air filter, fuel
lines and your brake/clutch hoses and fluids.
Check water levels in battery.
• C - Chain and Chassis:
Check your chain for proper lubrication and
tension. Give a once over to check your chain
guard, your foot pegs, all accessory mounts, all
your pin and clip attachments, your frame and
your shocks and forks. Turn your steering back
and forth a few times to make sure there’s
nothing wrong with your steering head bearings.
• K - Kickstand:
For your jiffy stand, make sure it’s secure, retracts
fully, isn’t bent and leaves you with enough
ground clearance when retracted.
History
Editors Note:
Instalment extracted from
Bolfert, Thomas. The Big Book
of Harley-Davidson: Official
Publication by Harley-Davidson
Motor company; Centennial Edition.
Milwaukee: Harley-Davidson, 2002.
The 1960’s
As the 1960’s began, Harley-
Davidson president, William H.
Davidson, announced a program
to support the growing lightweight
motorcycle market in the United
States, which would also boost the
company’s position in the overseas
market. Harley-Davison International, a
wholly-owned Swiss-based subsidiary, was
created to provide a foothold in the overseas
marketing of motorcycles, parts and accessories,
and scooters. Two years later, Harley-Davidson purchased
half interest in an Italian firm, Aeronautica Macchi, and
Aermacchi Harley-Davidson was formed. Aermacchi
Harley-Davidson was to produce a line of lightweight
Harley-Davidson motorcycles for the American market.
The first of these Italian lightweights with a Harley-
Davidson nameplate was the 1961 250cc Sprint. The
Sprint utilized a horizontal four-stroke, single cylinder
engine. Its torque and power helped it quickly grow in
popularity. At the same time, Harley-Davidson was also
offering the domestically produced Topper motor scooter
and the new 165cc Super-10.
By 1960, interest in motorcycling was on an upswing.
More the half a million motorcycles were registered in
the United States, and Harley-Davidson enjoyed a sixteen
percent increase in business that year. Contributing much
to this success were the top-of-the-line Duo-Glide and
Sportster models.
In 1961, William J. Harley was named chairman of
Aermacchi Harley-Davidson, and William H. Davidson’s
son, John, joined the company in the dealer relations
department. In 1962, the H-D product line saw several
significant changes. The 165 was enlarged to 175cc and
was offered in three versions. The Pacer was a traditional
street version. The Ranger was exclusively for off-road,
devoid of lights and sporting knobby tires. And the Scat
served as a hybrid model, for both on-road and off-road
riding.
Also in 1962, Harley-Davidson established the Tomahawk
Division. This expansion was the result of Harley’s purchase
of a company in Tomahawk, Wisconsin, which had
previously been devoted to the production of fiberglass
boats. This was also a time when Harley-Davidson decided
to branch out into the golf cart business. With their allfiberglass
bodies, the golf carts became an end product
of the Tomahawk plant. By the end of the decade, Harley-
Davidson was producing about one third of all gasoline
and electric powered golf carts in the United States.
There were no major additions or changes in 1963. A
few subtle enhancements to the Duo-Glide included a
fishtail muffler, brilliant colors, huskier brakes, and new
backswept optional fiberglass saddlebags.
A new employee started in 1963 as the company’s director
of styling. This person would have a profound, lasting
effect on Harley-Davidson and American motorcycling as a
whole. The oldest son of William H. Davidson, he assumed
responsibility for designing all future Harley-Davidson
models and many of their accessories. Riders nationwide
would come to know him as Willie G.
With the company’s diversification into the golf cart
business, H-D felt a need to change the company logo. In
1964, the familiar bar and shield trademark, which dated
back to the 1900’s, was dropped. The words “Motor
Cycles” were dropped and the new logo was simply the
words “Harley-Davidson”, bordered on top and bottom by
elongated triangles. The old logo was, of course, revived
in the future.
In 1965, Harley-Davidson installed an electric starter on
a leisure motorcycle for the first time. The Duo-Glide was
transformed into the Electra Glide. This was also the year
the Aermacchi branch released the new M-50, a 50cc,
two-stoke model with a step-through frame. The M-50
claimed an amazing 180 mpg.
Harley produced substantial power upgrades in their
1966 model line. The Electra Glide received an updated
engine with “power pac” aluminum heads that produced
ten percent more horsepower. Because of the shape of
their combustion chambers, these new heads earned the
engine the nickname of “shovelhead”. The Sportster also
received a fifteen percent boost in power by virtue of a
new carburetor and cams.
The XLH Sportster received an electric starter, and the
M-50 was jacked up to 65cc in 1967. This is also the
year the Electra Glide got a new, contemporary styled,
fiberglass sidecar. Except for the addition of the 125cc
Rapido, little changed in 1968. Along came 1969 and the
Sprint engine was given a power increase to 350cc. The
look of the Rapido was updated this year, which gave it a
sleeker, more modern appearance.
By the end of this decade, Harley-Davidson had a wellrounded
line of lightweight motorcycles and an established
and popular pair of heavyweights in the Sportster and
Electra Glide. The company was about to enter into
another era in its long history. Having gone public in 1965,
Harley-Davidson stock was well spread among both the
officers and the public. Late in the decade, facing hostile
takeover from a company intent on making wide-ranging
changes, H-D instead merged with an east coast company
with a heavy emphasis on bowling, billiards and other
leisure sports products. In 1969, Harley-Davidson became
a part of American Machine and Foundry (AMF), a
corporation of small to medium-sized companies chaired
by a one-time Harley rider, Rodney C. Gott. After six and a
half decades of forging ahead on its own, Harley-Davidson
now had to answer to a higher corporate authority.
Next edition will be 1970’s...
Following are a number of the regularly used hand signals please familiarise yourselves with these signals.
Apart from the corner marker signal all riders are expected to pass signals down the pack by displaying the same signal.
Single File
Arm and index finger extended
straight up.
Single File is used when there is
a road hazard or the lane is too
narrow to ride safely in Double
file.
STOP
Arm extend straight up from
shoulder, palm forward
Road Captain raises left arm at
right angles indicating for group
to come to a stop.
Staggered File
Arm with index and middle
finger extended straight up.
Used to advise resumption
after period of single file riding
Hazard on Roadway
Hazard on the LEFT, point with either the left foot or
left hand.
If Hazard is on the RIGHT then point with right foot.
Advises following riders of a hazard allowing evasive
action to be taken
Corner Marker
Arm extended moving in a circular motion and then
pointing to the centre of the circle
Road Captain signals the rider immediately behind
in the left column and the rider should remain at the
corner directing following members until the Tail End
Charlie reaches the corner.
The ride should then resume a position back in the
pack immediately in front of the TEC.
New Member Information
The following is information for new members about the Perth HOG Chapter.
HOG INTRO RIDES are held on the second Saturday morning of each month. These are basically to help introduce new riders
into the technique of riding staggered formation in a smaller group than rocking up to a full blown hog ride with no experience
at group riding. All our rides have Road Captains to explain the route and how to group ride and also a Tail End Charlie (TEC) who
follows the pack, ensuring no one gets lost.
BE ON TIME – It pays to be prompt at the organized monthly rides, which means you need to be fully fuelled up before arriving
at the designated departure point. All meeting departure points are listed on the bottom of page 8. You could end up as scribe
for the article for the Chapter magazine if you are the last to arrive.
GENERAL MEETINGS – As a member of the Perth Chapter HOG you are encouraged to attend our Chapter meetings held on the
second Monday of each month. This is a great time to socialize and get together with old and new friends. We discuss Chapter
business and distribute information about up and coming events and activities. These meetings start at 7.30pm at East Vic Park
RSL Club, Fred Bell Drive, Victoria Park.
COMMITTEE MEETINGS are held on the first Monday of each month unless it happens to be a Public Holiday and this it is the
Tuesday following the Public Holiday Monday. These meetings start at 7.30pm.
HOGWEST NEWS MAGAZINE - Our magazine is issued bi-monthly (February, April, June, August, October and December) and
Geo’s Midweek Ride
Article - Jeremy Bromley Road Captain - Geo Woods
Seven enthusiastic riders turned up at Caltex Midvale for the mid week ride on 6th Feb. Road Captain Geo
was the last to arrive. The weather having cooled off a bit from the previous week’s heat wave, we were in
for a glorious day.
A short pep talk from the RC and we were on our way up Greenmount, with Rod McPhearson bringing up
the rear as acting TEC. Most were dressed with riding safety gear, Bones Doherty had decided that shorts
and a tee shirt were more appropriate for the weather.
We left Great Eastern Highway at Park Road and headed towards Hovea. From Oxley Road into Alexandra
Road and right into Victoria Road.
Victoria Road runs into Owen Road and passed the newly renovated Parkerville Tavern, the lunch stop of
Geo took us to for his January midweek ride. Continuing through Parkerville we turned left onto Stonesville
Road then up to Ankertell Road. Through Mt Helena and onto Bunnings Road. At the ‘T’ junction we were
in Gidgegannup, A right turn saw us heading towards Toodyay.
I suspected a stop at the Cola Cafe for a cappuccino and a vanilla slice was on the road captain’s mind, I was
wrong.Eight kilometres short of Toodyay we took a right turn onto the Clackline Road and stopped almost
immediately. A discussion followed as to whether anybody was in a hurry to get home as there was an extra
loop at the end of the road and Geo wanted to investigate it.
A unanimous decision was that it was worth looking at and nobody was in a hurry to get home so at theT
junction we turned left instead of the usual right and were heading east. The road paralleled the Great Eastern
Highway on the right of us, we soon crossed under a bridge and the main highway was on our left. At the
end of this road we were put back on the highway and were heading for Bakers Hill and lunch.
The bakery at Bakers Hill is always a good place for a feed and a coffee, especially the meat pies. We sat
there discussing the worlds problems and watching the heavy vehicles rolling past. Our hunger satisfied we
headed home.
The ride was good, the company likewise and we could not have asked for more pleasant weather, a good
time was had by all who attended.
ABC’s Touring Overnighter
RC - Chris Lawson Article/Photos - Andrea ‘Flasha’ Pragnell
So where do I start …. the departure point at Fraser Motorcycles
8am.
We live the
closest to Frasers, however, were the last to arrive at the point
of destination so I got the treat of being the scribe for the ride.
We departed Frasers shortly after 8am, after our first photo
which was so nicely taken in front of Frasers building by Karen.
There were about 20 of us.
We headed up to Collier Road onto Tonkin Hwy and then
through Kenwick stopping at nearly every set of traffic lights.
Finally we got onto South West Highway where our first ABC’s
stop was at Harvey. We all got our photos taken in front of
the town sign before we got our photo taken at one of the
big things of Western Australia - The Big Orange, Harvey, not
before riding through some gravel.
After we had our photo taken at the Big Orange, we did some
dog laps, (what I call bog laps) of Harvey townsite before we
pulled up at Caltex for fuel, bite to eat and drink. We then
continued on to Australind & Eaton for photos and then on
to Bunbury where we stopped at the Parade Hotel where we
had an amazing Lunch. Oh yeah … did I mention the u-turns,
and the riding up footpaths to get our photos taken..…. I won’t
though!
With full bellies we continued on to our next destination
which was just a short ride down the road to Southwest Harley
Davidson Dearlership. From there we headed to Donnybrook,
got a bonus photo at the locality of Irishtown, and then onto
our final destination Wagin Hotel where we stopped for the
night. We did take some more u-turns, stopped for roadworks
and, not to mention traffic being stopped for us to do yet
another u-turn.
We rocked up to the Wagin Hotel where we met Dusty & Sian
who came up from their trip to Albany. The hotel was the
original “backpackers style” hotel where there was a handful of
twin rooms, one double room (the honeymoon suite) and the
rest single rooms. There was no air-con or fans and we shared
bathroom facilities. It was rather cosy.
ABC’s Touring Overnighter
Photos - Andrea ‘Flasha’ Pragnell & Karen
As it was a rather hot day that day, we cooled down outside
under the stars with a few bevies, some tasty nibblies & having
a great yarn while our feast of a barbecue dinner was being
cooked, topped off by a deconstructed pavlova for dessert.
YUM YUM.
Somebody (not mentioning any names) started throwing ice
cubes at others, which then turned into buckets of iced water
being thrown on to people and then the hose came out. It was
WAR !!! At the end of the night everyone had been either
iced, watered, hosed down or a combination of the three. The
sprinkler was even set up under one of the seats. Very Ninja
like. Thank God it was spotted before it was put to use.
After loads of fun and laughter, the last one standing called it a
night and turned in just after 1am.
The next day we woke up to bacon, eggs & sausages for
breakfast. Awesome, just what we needed before setting off to
get our last few photos taken.
What a great first ABC’s ride. Thank you so much to Karen &
Chris Lawson for making it such a memorable ride.
Friday Night Dealer Ride
Article/Photo - Leon Dimmack RC - Chris Lawson
It had been very warms nights...up till this Friday night. It was
much colder and raining. It was also the first time my son Jack
had come on a HOG ride. He was on the back of my Fat Bob
and we arrived a little late, as the Road Captain, Chris, was
giving the ride brief. I introduced my 15 year old son Jack,
and the group in unison responded with ”Hi Jack”. This warm
welcome of my son, unknown to my Hog family, reminded
me of why Leanne and I had joined HOG Perth Chapter in
the first place.
My quiet little joy was short lived as I was awarded the job of
writing about the night for my late arrival. This was followed
up quickly with fine nominations for parking my beloved Fat
Bob, the voluptuous “ “Bertha”, under the Frasers awning out
of the rain when everyone else’s was in the rain. Ahhhh, the
good natured fun of being in the HOG family. This is my first
time writing for our newsletter so don’t know what angle to
write it from. I decided to make it from my own perspective.
It was great to see such a good turn out for the ride on a
colder wet night. I did not count, but would guess around a
dozen bikes, and pillions as well.
Chris took us to the coas,t coming out just north of Trigg
Beach and we followed the coast down to the beach side
restaurant, Salt, just north of Freo. I was concerned that for
my son’s first real ride with me and with the HOG family, his
enjoyment would be damped, proportionally, as his body
was with the rain. But he was on top of the moon having the
time of his life enjoying the whole experience. Rain or not.
He enjoyed being part of a group of nicely rumbling Harley
engines cruising down the road. His smile grew with each
crackling exhaust.
As we arrived at Salt by the beach, the HOG members and the
4 guys from Frasers, all made my son Jack feel very welcome.
He had a smile and look on his face that only I would have
recognised as being one of happy times and feeling like part
of the group. It was great to see the Frasers guys come along
on the ride and enjoy the night with us. Thanks guys and we
appreciate your support and all the support from Frasers.
The meal and beverages went down well and the laughter
and story telling, made it a really enjoyable night as always.
The staff at Salt seemed to go out of their way to make us
feel welcome and ensure we were well looked after, even if
we did play musical meals as they came out and orders were
muddled. Yes Mark (Doyler), I am referring to you eating my
fish and chips.
When the time came for farewells and we all went our ways
for the rides home, the weather was dry and a nice cool
evening. My son Jack had his impressions of coming out with
bunch of bad arse bikies, pleasantly smashed, as he quickly
realised this was a great bunch of welcoming people who
enjoy a the same love of riding Harleys. On the way home
he had discussions of getting his bike licence and a Harley
of his own and joining our HOG family. Unknown to you all,
you had a very positive impression to my son. I want to thank
you. The joy of owning and riding a Harley is known to us
all, but the fun and good times of being a HOG member , it
what makes so many great memories. This is why Leanne and
I joined HOG Perth chapter in the first place.
Wind in the face and bugs in the teeth....AAahhhh life is good.
Midweek Ride to Gingin
RC - Geo Artilce/Photos - Geo
Midweek Ride to Gingin via the Eastern Wheatbelt. Wednesday 6 March.
As my last few rides have been fairly technical explorations of the Eastern Hills I decided to make this one fast and cruisy, with lots
of long legs, little traffic, a morning coffee stop and a bush comfort pause.
Gingers on Great Northern Highway was our launch spot and I arrived to the sight of bikes and Hog members crowding the
meagre shopfront parking bays. No matter , they kept coming, some a little late , and with Rod McPherson again as my TEC we
prepared to commit to the road.
With two riders finishing their fuelling I briefed Rod on “two to come”, and slowly moved off up the bitumen. Alas ,a Jap cruiser
confused the issue , I saw him at the bowser and should have alerted Rod, but just didn’t realise how he would decoy final
clearance.
No matter , Wizard dropped off to wait for our man and and we slowly picked up speed. The usual Police camera car was causing
mayhem just shy of Bullsbrook, and I worried a little that our trailing two would get pinged , but thankfully that didn’t happen.
We waited till Rod and Wiz caught us, and then the big twins were urged into proper top gear work as we cruised into the hills
straight up Great Northern, traffic not too bad.
Bindoon and its culinary delights soon appeared and no time was wasted in parking and ordering a most diverse range of pastries,
from pies to buns. Springer John was acting precious and sent his scroll back as having failed the fresh test……. He earnestly
tackled the double replacement buns as a matter of honour and I must confess I did help him just a little , but baulked at the
butter of course.
This time we got away smoothly and tackled the big climb out of Bindoon, before cranking a right onto the Calingiri Road. The
countryside here is a bit marginal with sand drifts in paddocks evident, and I’m just not sure what sort of a season they had this
year.
Thirty clicks on fairly straight road soon passed and we paraded the empty streets of Calingiri before crossing the rail line and
heading back towards New Norcia. A quick right onto Gt Northern and then a left saw us on Gillengarra NN rd heading west,, with
some nice sweepers making things a bit more interesting, and much better farming country to see.
We pulled up along the tree lined road to take some piccies and reduce the pressure and soon were thumbing the switch
again. A left onto Moora Rd and the pangs of hunger put a little urgency into our passage, as we swept through Mogumber and
Wannamal, past the dry lake system and across to Moolabeenie via Wells Glover Rd.
From there it was but a short thrash to our destination , the historic Gingin Hotel.
Six dollar steak sandwiches are the specialty here and the multiple orders again proved their worth. Springer had a conscience
attack after all his Bindoon buns and refused all food, a most unusual event!.
We lounged around and chewed the fat , gloating in our good fortune at being able to enjoy good weather , spirited riding , cheap
eats and good company , on a weekday!!
With a little orientation for some we split and headed home , and I was amused to overhear one Ultra driver on Ch 20 saying “ a
good ride ,but did we have to ride so far for lunch ?”….. The answer could be anything that springs to mind , but for mine it would
be “because we can !!!!“
Anyhow , keep passin wind,
Geo…..
Willy’s Intro Ride
23 HOG members assembled at Frasers under threatening skies (apparently rain was just an illusion in some weather
persons mind). With the usual meet & greet formalities out of the way, it was time for our ride “Road Captain” to brief
the assembled participants. “Due to it being membership renewal day, it will only be a short ride; we will be going to
a coffee shop in High Wycombe”. “I was up at 5am this morning looking up Google maps to find out how to get there
and back” So the fun begins…..
We set off in the usual orderly fashion as we waved farewell to the BBQ volunteers in the carpark. The first half of the
ride was going really well (that is not to say that the whole ride didn’t go well)
Willy, being his usual thoughtful self, decided for whatever reason, (or perhaps it was Googls maps directions!!!), that
we all needed to do a “suburb appreciation” phase of the ride.
I come from Perth and I have no idea where we went!!! After many turns and traversing Guildford and Midland, we
ventured into the “burbs” of High Wycombe.
I am sure there were a lot of people unsure about what was happening in their normally quiet Saturday morning
suburb as 23 Harleys rolled through. Eventually we came to our destination.
Being the considerate souls we are, we parked our bikes in every conceivable parking spot, but we did leave room for
one other car, should someone else come along (which they did).
The coffee orders were placed and the service was nothing short of fantastic. Our barristas, Deb & Emily, were very
friendly and appeared to enjoy our company.
The coffee was very good and served in real mugs! The usual chit chat took place for a while. Deb wanted a photo or
two of the bikes. After they were taken, Dude decided to have a protest that his bike didn’t get enough “exposure” in
the pics so they took one of his bike all by itself!
Now the barristas asked the assembled crew if anyone would take them for a ride around the block; apparently no one
else must have heard this except for me as there was no reply.
At great expense to the management, and uphold the true good natured spirit of HOG, I offered Deb a ride. Dude
redeemed himself by loaning his lid to Deb. Helmet on and her skirt tucked in, Deb climbed on board and off we went.
I wasn’t planning on going that far with her but with all the excitement of the ride, Deb forgot to tell me where to
turn, until I had passed the turn. Eventually we ran out of road and had to turn. Arrived back at the coffee shop and
then Emily raced out with a similar request “can you just take me up the road and back?” Meanwhile as everyone was
getting ready to leave, they all relaxed for a few more minutes.
During the short (but fast) ride up the road and back, there was constant screaming, laughing and the words sick &
awesome were mentioned many times. Arriving back, the barristas were happy, we were all happy and it was time to
depart for Frasers. A much more direct route was taken and we all arrived together in time for registration and BBQ.
Thanks to Willy for the ride, Ian Warne (TEC) and all the corner markers also. A great time was had by all. Must do it
again sometime soon….
Freebird’s Ride to Lancelin
Free birds Ride To Lancelin.
Well as new ‘Granny’ owners bbb needed to put the k’s on the bike to get to the first service! So what better way but to join Cathy
on her ride to lancelin. We managed to get to gingers ‘just’ in time ( hence why I am writing this story)
22 bikes made their way through the northern highway to Bindoon for coffee or fluids as required as it was warming up a bit.
After a nice catch up with friends old and new, we set off to lancelin, through places I had never driven through, Wannamal ( it
had a cometary, but I didn’t see any live people!)
Victoria Plains, Mogumber. The ground was so dry, and we were getting a little warm on the long stretches, red earth all around,
temperature gauge on the. New bike read 110 fare height, which converted was 43.33! Hot hot hot! There were some lovely
sweeping bends for bbb to test out the ultra and some little patches of gravel so that he had a reason for sitting with his bike
later.... Cleaning.
Coming over the crest of a hill, you could feel the temp drop about 10 degrees. Lovely!
More sweeping bend and then we are only 10 km from Lancelin.
arriving at the Endeavour tavern, looking over the water, wow, awesome. Cool breezes, cold beer and fish and chips and friends
and laughter.... What more do you need? Except the Dude? What happened to him? He Watson the ride but didn’t make it to the
end.. Legend has it that he nearly ran out of fuel.. That must be a fine! The mystery will be revealed I am sure!
Great ride Freebird,,,
