CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
Raising Mercy’s Spirit
Catholic Schools Week is a time to reflect on
the grace that allows us to attend such a school as
Mercy, and be thankful to all who support our
education, including staff members, parents, and friends,”
Christina Hadley '13.
Mercy celebrated 2013 Catholic Schools Week, “Raise the Standards,” by extending
gratitude, focusing on outreach and community, and “Raising Mercy’s Spirit.”
Open House and Mass were held to kick-off the week of January 27th. Students
took a moment during school to make a surprise phone call to their parents to
say, “THANK YOU for sending me to Mercy!” Throughout the week, girls made
heartfelt valentines for Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, the Sisters of Mercy
in Farmington Hills, and Covenant House in Detroit. They also wrote letters to
send abroad to students in Sudan where a new school is being built by the Sisters
of Mercy. A pep rally was held in the gym where students and staff joined together
to make a giant “M,” creating one big Mercy family. Check out the video of the
assembly action on newsprintnow.net.
Mercy women learn how to strengthen their relationship with God, are
academically challenged to reach their full potential, and give the gift of time and
effort to help others in need. Mercy continues to raise the standards and stands
out from other institutions. Rejoice, WE ARE MERCY HIGH SCHOOL! Reprinted by Permission of the Detroit Free Press.
HEART OF MERCY
"Our hearts can always be in the same place, centered in God, for whom
alone we go forward or stay back." - Catherine McAuley
The Heart of Mercy award is a cherished distinction and honored tradition at Mercy High School. We give congratulations and praise
to senior Maria Walawender and Pastoral Minister and Mercy Associate Mrs. Judi Griggs-Dennis who live out the Mercy values of
Human Dignity, Service, Justice, Mercy, and Option for the Poor. Thank you for being faithful and compassionate women of God who
make a difference to everyone in our Mercy family.
Reflections on Maria:
Maria is a shining example of Mercy. She makes every person feel they
can call Mercy home and treats everyone with the utmost dignity and
respect. She is selfless, giving and puts others first. She has been a
Kairos leader, tutor, leads Faith on Fridays and accumulated over 200
service hours. Maria lives the phrase, “God is first, others are second,
and I am last.”
Reflections on Mrs. Dennis:
Mrs. Dennis is Mercy. She works tirelessly behind the scenes and
without attention and praise. She makes everyone feel loved and
comfortable. Her heart is bigger than anyone’s I ever met. Mrs. Dennis
created the first American Student Mercy Associate program bringing
girls closer to God. Her love for Mercy, students and staff motivates
her service.
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
A Day in the Life of a Mercy Senior - Lauren Marguerite Vandenberg '13
7:05 AM - Rise and Shine! It's Tuesday, or as I like to call it, Day 2. Wash my face, brush my teeth, throw my hair up,
and put my uniform on. I grab a protein juice smoothie to start my day off right and I’m out the door!
8:08 AM - My adviser Mrs. Riley greets me with her warm morning smile and never forgets to say, "have a good day."
I head to the cafe and catch up with my friends before first hour starts and finish up some last minute homework.
8:20 AM - I walk to Analysis with Trigonometry with my best friend, Becca. We usually make it into class just as the
bell rings for first hour (must be a senior thing). Mr. Janusch greets us and we listen to prayer and begin with
checking homework.
9:20 AM - I make the long journey to the S Hall to Mrs. Salvia's AP European History class. Today is a low-stress day
because we are working on our presentations for later this week.
10:10 AM - Oh, Physics. My favorite class of the day because I get to spend it with one of my favorite teachers,
Mr. Wampuszyc. Today, we are learning about Harmonics and Sound Waves. It sounds boring, but "Mr. Wamp" really
knows how to spice it up!
11:10 AM - World Religions Class with Mrs. Gibb. So far, this has been one of my favorite religion classes here at
Mercy.
11:55 AM - It's time for Life Skills. When Mrs. Kusch walks into N-17, the class always asks "Mrs. Kusch are we off?"
It never fails to make her roll her eyes because she knows we are just messing around. Mrs. Kusch is very helpful
when it comes to learning about our future.
12:55 PM - Last class of the day, Literature into Film with Ms. Smith.
1:35 PM - Finally, my school day is over. I don't have a 7th hour class, so I head back to Mrs. Riley to sign out.
2:00 PM - Ahhhh, home sweet home. Before gymnastics practice every day, I take a 30-45 minute power nap for
a little spark of energy.
2:45 PM - Rise and grind. Get up and get ready for practice.
3:30 PM - I head into the locker room to do our rope climb before practice.
3:45 PM - 15 minutes to complete warm-up, stretch, and be ready to go to our events.
4:00 PM - Bars. We only get 3 turns to warm-up our skills, and then we have to "show" a routine. You only get one
chance to make this routine, so it has to be good.
4:45 PM - Beam. My favorite event. I love the challenge that it brings and how you have to fight to stay on. We warm
up with jump ropes on the beam and today we have to stick 5 routines.
5:30 PM - Floor. Warm-up and routines followed by cardio on the elliptical. This helps us build muscle endurance so
that our routines will be easier the more we do them. Floor usually gets harder towards the end of the week,
but today it's only Tuesday and my body is still feeling fresh.
6:15 PM - Conditioning. Frog jumps usually make your legs really sore so we know it's going to be a hard day.
7:00 PM - Our last event for the day, Vault. Do some running drills and then 8 vaults.
7:45 PM - On Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday practice usually ends. Since it's Tuesday, we have an extra 30 minutes
added to our practice schedule. After we are finished with our last event, I usually go back to Bars and work on skills
in my routine such as my Gienger and my blind full.
8:15 PM - Finally time to line up and be dismissed to go home from a long practice.
8:40 PM - I walk in the door and my parents are sitting down at the table waiting for me to eat dinner. My mom
made taco salad tonight which is one of my favorite things to eat after a long day.
9:00 PM - I go up to my room and start my homework. If Mercy is good at one thing, it's definitely keeping us all
very busy!
11:15 PM - It's time to call it quits and get ready for bed.
11:45 PM - Without any trouble, I fall asleep, preparing myself for another day full of school, practice and homework.
CONGRATULATIONS stellar scholars!
Christina Hadley '13 and Stephanie Luther '13 advanced to FINALISTS in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Competition.
About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the 2013 National Merit Scholarship
Program by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The
nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of US high school seniors, includes
the highest scoring entrants in each state. To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding
academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and
earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test. All winners of Merit
Scholarship are chosen from the Finalist group, based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments. Every
Finalist competes for single payment scholarships, which are awarded on a state representational basis.

iWizards
A group of Mercy’s iPad toting ninth graders have been molded into iWizards. They will work their
magic to help all members of our Mercy community develop iPad skills and assist in training the
incoming Class of 2017. With the help of Associate Principal and Apple Distinguished Educator
Mr. Larry Baker and Mercy professional development consultant Lucy Gray, the iWizards have
been working hard to:
• Provide tech support
• Create multimedia tutorials on topics like Dropbox, iPhoto, Pages for IOS, and iAnnotate PDF
• Post tech tips on blog
• Develop tech orientation curriculum for Class of 2017
• Promote tech use and being a good digital citizen through skits and commercials
• Communicate with faculty and staff about areas of concern
• Incorporate social media, apps and procedures
“We hope to tap into our iPad iWizards to not only teach new students how to use their iPads,
but we also want them to experience enrichments and be challenged creatively,“ Larry Baker.
Class of 2017 students will get to meet some iWizards when they pick up their Mercy iPads this
summer. iWizards are also planning to assist in the service area of the IT Department. It won’t
be long before we are recruiting the new freshwomen to become new iWizards. Visit the Mercy
Technology blog at http://it.mhsmi.org/ to keep up with the iWizards.
Mercy’s First Mock Trial Team
Wins Honorable Mention
“Objection! Hearsay, your Honor!” The Mercy Mock Trial Team took their case
to the Oakland County Circuit Court to compete in the State Bar of Michigan’s Mock
Trial Regional Competition on March 9, 2013. Their voices were heard as evidenced
by the Honorable Mention trophy they brought home in their first year of competition.
Mock Trial simulates a real trial where student participants play the roles of attorneys
and witnesses. Team members present their side of a hypothetical case, while
competing directly against another school taking the opposite position. It’s an
entertaining approach to sharpen critical analysis, public speaking and interpersonal
skills and is akin to putting on a play that takes some exciting legal twists and turns.
Twenty-eight teams competed. Mercy was one of only eight recognized for their
exceptional performance. The team members diligently prepared for this competition
since October with the assistance of four attorneys and an expert in witness
testimony. Their preparation paid off as they demonstrated poise and tenacity during
each trial. Many thanks go to the founding members of the Mock Trial Team who
represented Mercy with honor and enthusiasm.
ADVANCING MERCY
A Strategic Path Forward
Mercy’s Board of Trustees and Administration have created a comprehensive plan to ensure a preferred future for our students. The
long view includes skillful financial planning and stewarding of resources to care for and strengthen our physical facilities and enhance
student programs.
“As we move forward it is important to have a vision that anchors all our efforts and assures that Mercy students will continue to thrive and
learn in the years to come. We must know our roots as well as look with a keen eye to the needs of the future.”
Dr. Cheryl Delaney Kreger ’66, President
Careful financial planning allows Mercy to recruit and hire highly qualified staff, expand programs such as counseling and technology,
and develop and maintain our facility.
We are proud of the recent and upcoming grounds and facilities improvements made possible through the generosity of our donors:
• 8 new science labs, preparation areas and teacher office space
• A new soccer field
• Resurfaced south parking lot and lights
• Renewal of the Our Lady of Mercy Courtyard
• A large capacity electrical substation to be installed this summer
• Cafeteria courtyard construction to be completed before fall
• Partial window replacement
This summer’s major project reflects our focus on the future.
“I never thought I would be this excited about the installation of a new electric substation at Mercy High School. The reality is that this project
is one of the keys to fulfilling our vision for the future of this nearly 50-year-old building.” Tom Sklut, Executive Director of Advancement
Our next-phase plans include:
• Air conditioning for the auditorium, counseling area, and gym, summer 2014
• Renovation of one courtyard per year until all six are transformed
• Total replacement of windows and treatments
• Major redesign of student commons areas including entry, cafeteria, and lockers
• Addition of athletic parking lot, concession stand, restrooms, and ticket booth
Mercy High School has been in the process of raising gifts and pledges through a Major Gifts Initiative, designed to raise $1.3 million
for these projects. To donate or for more information about the Major Gifts Initiative, contact Tom Sklut, Executive Director of
Advancement, at 248-893-3538.
2013 Distinguished Alumna
12
Mary Anne Keating McDonnell ’46
Lifelong Social Worker
Affiliate, Daughters of Charity
Mercy High School is pleased to announce the
recipient of the 2013 Distinguished Alumna
Award, Mary Anne Keating McDonnell ’46.
Mary Anne will receive her award at Tea for Tuition
on April 28.
A member of the first graduating class, Mary Anne spent her senior year
(1945-1946) at Our Lady of Mercy High School. Those formative
days at Mercy instilled a giving spirit in Mary Anne. In fact, her first
volunteer experience came as a Mercy student preparing meals for
the Little Sisters of the Poor. Mary Anne looks back fondly on that
experience.
Mary Anne earned a Bachelor of Philosophy from the University of
Detroit and took graduate courses in social work and education, on her
way to becoming a Certified Social Worker. She immersed herself in the
work of agencies such as Catholic Social Services, St. Mary’s Hospital,
and St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center.
Much like Catherine McAuley, Mary Anne was proactive and resourceful
in her ministry. She rented vacated convents and rectories in Detroit,
refurbished them, and set up community-based homes for unwed
mothers. She ensured that the residents, many of them teenagers,
received food, shelter, and compassion.
Noreen McGowan Keating ’58 notes, “Mary Anne is truly a woman making a
difference. When you combine her dedication to her family with her work with the poor
and disenfranchised of our modern world, Mary Anne is a near match for the values of
Mother McAuley.”
Mary Anne “retired” at age 62, then worked part-time for Sarah
Fisher’s Marillac outreach and O’Brien/Sullivan Funeral Home. She
was instrumental in forming the Christian Service Ministry at St. James
Church in Novi. Presently, she volunteers at Providence Hospital.
Mary Anne reflects, “The original school values are still part of my lifestyle.
My primary mission in life has been the respect and dignity of all people.”
100+ Women Who Care
A new group of women in town is committed to helping those in need in
metro Detroit. Not surprisingly, Mercy alumnae play a leading a role.
Founded in December 2011 by Karen Rashid-Balow ’81, Nancy Malone
Sullivan ’80, and their friend Molly Williams, 100 Plus Women Who Care
Motown has united women from all walks of life and financial backgrounds
in its goal of raising money efficiently and quickly for local charities and
non-profits. Their philosophy is simple, “As a group, we can make a
significant and immediate impact on our community.”
At quarterly meetings, several members present a worthy cause. All
members vote and then each member writes a check for $100 directly to
the chosen charity. In a one-hour meeting, thousands of dollars are raised.
To date, the group has contributed to five local charities whose various
missions include empowering the homeless and increasing post-partum
depression awareness. In August, they plan to reach the milestone of
$100,000 in donations.
February’s chosen organization, which received $13,800, was Mercy
Education Project (MEP), a Detroit-based initiative that provides a caring,
The Mercy Homeland
Dear Mercy Family,
Friday, June 1, 2012: The day after the Class of 2012 graduated from Mercy High School in
Farmington Hills, Michigan. I reminisced about my own graduation from Mercy and the four
awesome years I spent there: the hardworking faculty and staff, the class-coded uniforms,
the life changing experience known as Kairos, the wonderful sisterhood.
Friday, June 1, 2012: The day that I stepped foot on Mercy's homeland – Baggot Street in
Dublin, Ireland.
I graduated from Mercy in 2009 and am majoring in mechanical engineering at Kettering University
in Flint, Michigan. In the spring of 2012, I spent several months studying in Konstanz, Germany,
and it was truly the best time of my life. I visited 10 countries, became friends with strangers,
experienced different cultures, and learned more about the world and myself.
A highlight was a visit to Dublin, the birthplace of the Sisters of Mercy. Throughout my years at Mercy,
I learned a great deal about Catherine McAuley and the house on Baggot Street. The house is
still standing, now known as Mercy International Centre (MIC). While there, I watched videos about
Catherine McAuley and the Sisters, toured the rooms and grounds, and enjoyed tea and scones.
Something about being there felt like home – after all, it is the deepest root of my Mercy home.
To all current Mercy students, I sincerely hope that you get the same feeling of being at home,
just as I did, during your years at Mercy. You may not realize it now, but the education you receive
allows you to learn far more than what is in the books. Furthermore, the young women become your
sisters and your teachers become your mentors. Mercy will now and forever be a part of you.
Peace. Love. Happiness.
experienced educational failure. MEP’s
Director of Development and Marketing
is Sister Maureen Mulcrone, RSM ’64.
For Karen and Nancy, the rewards are
plentiful. Nancy says, “There is a lot of
energy at the meetings, and we meet
wonderful women who care about the
community. We take our kids to the
check presentations. It instills a spirit
of giving.” Karen adds, “An attendee at
the Tree of Hope award ceremony put it
simply: ‘100+ Women saves lives.’ That
keeps me going.”
Front: Nancy Malone Sullivan ’80,
Sr. Maureen Mulcrone, RSM ’64,
Karen Rashid-Balow ’81. Back Amy
Amador (MEP), Molly Williams
All funds raised stay in the local community. The Detroit chapter includes
more than 150 members, including a dozen Mercy alumnae. Chapters exist
nationwide. To learn more, visit 100pluswomenmotown.com.
