riding and the weather we’re experiencing this spring. We can wait until the sun shines and air temperatures warm. It could be May before we’ll see that kind of weather if the weather forecast can be believed. It looks like rain for the next week to 10 days. On the days not predicted to be overcast and rainy, the sun might come out but the temperatures will remain in the 30s to low 40s. Not ideal riding conditions to be sure. Or we can ride anyway. I’ve observed many of you out there doing just that; riding in every type of weather imaginable. With cold, wet riding gear available, it’s easy enough to stay dry and comfortable even when riding in the foul weather. Many motorcycle tires are quite effective at moving water from under the tires and maintaining traction in all but puddles of water. Our visibility can be enhanced with hi-viz vests, jackets and helmets so we can feel more safe while riding amongst our caged brethren. The reality is that we can quite easily and safely ride in almost any type of weather with the exception being snow and ice on the road surface. Some of you are even riding in the snow and ice. Kudos to you but please ride safe. I would like to tell you that I’ve been out riding no matter what the weather. The truth is that I didn’t ride at all in March nor have I saddled up this far into April. I have the gear to ride anytime and yet I’ve been finding excuses not to ride in the spring cold and rain. In January and February, you could have found me riding. Not huge miles but a couple hundred in each of those months. I was out there. Now I’m waiting for better conditions. I’m embarrassed. If several of the past few years are any indication, we could have cool, wet weather well into May and maybe even June. Wait too long the riding season will be all of three months. Putting off riding is no longer an option. Time to get riding. Today. As soon as I wrap up this issue later this afternoon. One rider who isn’t waiting for the weather to improve is The Skinny On… columnist, Pedro Gregorio. Acknowledging that March 2012 weather was an anomaly and we really can’t expect to have 80 degree temperatures so early in the season 2006 HARLEY DAVIDSON SCREAMIN EAGLE V-ROD Many extras only, 4,000 miles $16,999 6971 Highland Road 248-666-4651 Waterford, MI 48327 www.tech-care.com every year, Pedro’s desire to ride wasn’t going to be deterred. He decided on a third option. He took some vacation time and headed south where the weather is good year ‘round (mostly) to ride. His trip report is included in these pages. Don’t miss it. One rider who never has to worry about the weather when planning trips is southern California adventure rider and columnist supreme is Nicole Espinosa. Nicole frequently shares stories from her personal life and equates those experiences to riding motorcycles. This month she continues that tradition. Nicole has worked hard to improve her sand-riding skills and has found that those lessons work equally well in other aspects of her life. Be sure not to miss Nicole’s terrific column this month. Franz “The Preacher” Hoffer, our resident Harley-oriented columnist, addresses two subjects in his column this month. In the first half, he talks about his philosophy for bike maintenance at both the beginning and end of the season. In the second, he compares the performance of his Harley to that of the new Ultra Classic. Good tips and an interesting column. Read it. Attorney Dondi Vesprini tackles a subject that doesn’t often get much attention – the potential liabilities of backyard mechanics who work on motorcycles other than their own. Each month, Dondi offers legal perspectives on a variety of motorcycle-related issues that affect many of us. It’s one of those do-not- miss columns in each issue. Matthew Mesarchik writes this month about riding with someone you love. A friend of a friend recently passed as a result of a car accident. Many lessons came out of this accident even for people like Matthew who were somewhat distant from the actual event. A thoughtful piece of work. The repeal of the Michigan helmet law has come under scrutiny recently with reports that motorcycle fatalities increased significantly from 2011 to 2012. Many blame the repeal. Attorney Jason Waechter offers his own take on the reports. If you’re at all interested in the helmet law, this is a must read. District 14 Road Division Chief Terri Sweet reports in with news about several upcoming events organized by club members. Terri’s last two columns were interesting tales on a trip to ride the Dragon and tips for learning to ride a trike. Her Division is doing some interesting things and creating some fun events. Check out her column for details. Despite the weather, the season is ramping up and there’s much to do. Events are filling the schedule and news from around the region abounds. It’s all here in these pages. Thank you for reading. Feel free to share your issue when you’re done with it. The more people who read it, the better. Thanks to our advertisers who make this publication possible each month. We simply couldn’t function without their support. Their support for us comes from your support for them.
