Kanakanak Chapel Is<br />

Dedicated In Alaska<br />

Kanakanak Chapel near Dillingham. The old chapel<br />

which will be removed is shown at the rear. The<br />

station wagon known as the "Travel-AII" is standing<br />

at the side of the new building.<br />

know that this house, which I have builded,<br />

is called by Thy name." Through the years<br />

of our churc.h's history we have seen Solomon's<br />

prayer answered. At the dedication<br />

service of the new Kanakanak Chapel these<br />

words became more meaningful for us.<br />

Friends from Dillingham and the surrounding<br />

area filled the chapel to capacity on October.<br />

29 at the special dedication service.<br />

The Alaska Provincial Board was represented<br />

by D. C. Schattschneider who brought a<br />

stirring address and offered the dedicatory<br />

prayer. The Kanakanak young people sang<br />

for the occasion.<br />

Since the work at Kanakanak began several<br />

years ago, under the leadership of Mildred<br />

Siebke, it has grown to the extent that<br />

the quarters became crowded. During the<br />

past two years 40 children were packed into<br />

a space 12' x 16', and y01l1lg people's meetings<br />

were- held in several sessions to accommodate<br />

the group. .<br />

The building of the new chapel began<br />

during the summer of 1961 and the outside<br />

construction was completed in several<br />

weeks because of the volunteer labor of<br />

the cannery work,ers from the Kuskokwim<br />

area who gave their spare time to the project.<br />

After the fall ship arrived the inside<br />

work was completed. The chapel is 20' x<br />

30' and will seat 70 people comfortably.<br />

The two classrooms at the front of the<br />

building have already proven to be a great<br />

asset.<br />

Kanakanak is approximately seven miles<br />

from Dillingham, our present station. It is<br />

the location for the government hospital<br />

and the personnel of this institution support<br />

our work. There are quite a number<br />

of fnmilies living within a one mile radius<br />

of the chapel. The children of most of these<br />

families never attended any Sunday school<br />

until our work began and the majority of<br />

the parents have had no church background<br />

but are grateful that their children have an<br />

opportunity to hear God's Word. We also<br />

have eight families living enroute hom Dillingham<br />

to Kanakanak haH of whom were<br />

former residents of Clark's Point, a <strong>Moravian</strong><br />

village. The new mission uTravel-All"<br />

is a tremendous help in our work because<br />

none of these families have any other means<br />

of transportation.<br />

The work at Kanakanak is already pro·<br />

viding a greater nucleus for our Dillingham<br />

congregation. Sunday school and<br />

young people's meetings are conducted<br />

weekly and several families faithfully attend<br />

the Sunday evening services at Dillingham.<br />

The building of the chapel is an<br />

Alaskan project. Funds were provided by<br />

special offerings received in our Alaskan<br />

churches in 1961, from generous gifts of<br />

members and friends of the Dillingham<br />

congregation, and from the sale of the old<br />

building. There remains only a small deficit<br />

in the building fund. The young people<br />

raised the funds to pay the freight on<br />

an organ donated by Yerger Brothers in<br />

Lititz, Penna., and donations of pictures<br />

and draperies have helped to make a worshipful<br />

House of God.<br />

Phillips, Lula Hampton, born October<br />

27, 1894; died January 14, <strong>1962</strong>. A member<br />

of New Philadelphia Church. Funeral conducted<br />

by the Rev. Robert A. lobst and the<br />

Rev. Howard G. Foltz. Interment in New<br />

Philadelphia Graveyard.<br />

Motsinger, Josephine Foltz, born July 16,<br />

1875; died January 30, <strong>1962</strong>. A member of<br />

New Philadelphia Church. Funeral conducted<br />

by the Rev. Robert A. lobst and the<br />

Rev. Howard G. Foltz. Interment in New<br />

Philadelphia Graveyard.<br />

Parks, Miss Claude Lucille, died January<br />

6, <strong>1962</strong>; born March 26, 1893. A member<br />

of Advent. Funeral conducted by Rev. Paul<br />

Snider and the Rev. Fredrick Hege. Interment<br />

in Advent graveyard.<br />

Snider, Dora Bell, born March 13, 1872<br />

in Stokes County, N. C.; died December 22,<br />

1961. A member of Fairview Church. Funeral<br />

CQnducted by the Rev. Vernon E. Daetwyler.<br />

Interment in <strong>Moravian</strong> Graveyard.<br />

Hill, Bertha Beatrice, born December 4,<br />

1914 in Newport, Tenn.; died December<br />

26, 1961. A member of Fairview Church.<br />

Funeral conducted by the Rev. Don Lyerly.<br />

Interment in Forsyth Memorial Park.<br />

Allen, John James, Jr., died January 18,<br />

<strong>1962</strong>. Funeral conducted by Bishop J. Kenneth<br />

Pfohl and the Rev. Wallace Elliott.<br />

Interment in the <strong>Moravian</strong> Graveyard. A<br />

member of Home Church.<br />

Clayton, Mrs. Llewellyn Davis, died January<br />

20, <strong>1962</strong>. Funeral conducted by Dr.<br />

James C. Hughes and Dr. R. Gordon<br />
