Multiple sclerosis and botox
Dr. R.B. Egerdie
Multiple Sclerosis can affect
many aspects of your quality
of life, but one of the most
troublesome, and difficult to
manage, is the alteration of normal
bladder function that occurs with
the disease. To a greater or lesser
extent, many people as they
age experience bladder control
problems; however, if a neurologic
disease is superimposed upon the
deteriorating bladder function that
occurs with aging, it can become
quite miserable.
Bladder urgency, urinary
frequency, urinary incontinence,
and the expense of pads and
medications may become
consuming issues, and the available
treatments often have very
undesirable side effects rendering
them ineffective or intolerable.
But there are options. Botox,
In very small doses, botox, or
botulinum toxin, has an amazing
number of uses in medicine.
or botulinum toxin, is the most
poisonous substance known to man
and causes botulosis. In very small
doses, however, it has an amazing
number of uses in medicine.
Botox was first approved for use
in 1989 for the treatment of neck
spasms, eye spasms, crossed eyes,
muscle spasms (cerebral palsy, or
after a stroke), abnormal sweating,
and for cosmetic purposes
(smoothing wrinkles). Recently
Botox was approved for use in
Canada for patients with spinal
cord injuries and degenerative
neurologic conditions, including
multiple sclerosis.
Botox only acts in the area
where it is injected, and, since
it only works locally, it does not
cause the dry mouth, constipation,
blurring of vision, and other side
effects commonly associated with
medications taken by mouth. Small
amounts of Botox are injected into
your bladder, under sedation, in
20 injection sites so that the entire
bladder is treated.
FITNESS
Exercising safely in the cold
By Eliza Reid
Winter weather provides a
number of unique opportunities to
get outside and be active. Skating,
skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking
are all excellent exercises for your
cardiovascular system. Improved
mood, self-image and sleep are
only a few of the many benefits to
being active all year round.
The cold weather and winter
terrain, however, can pose some
unique challenges and risks.
The key to enjoying the benefits
of exercising outdoors while
minimizing your risk of an injury
is to prepare well for the winter
conditions. Here are some tips to
keep you safe outside and feeling
great.
Dress for the cold weather. Wear
cold weather boots with adequate
grip on the bottom to help with
navigating safely on snowy terrain.
Wear warm socks, gloves and a hat.
A fair amount of our body heat is
lost from the top of our heads so it
is important to keep yours covered
up. Dress in loose fitting clothing,
this will allow for a pocket of
warm air to be created between you
and your clothes. Always bring a
spare pair of socks and gloves so
you can change them if they get
wet. Frostbite most often occurs
with the fingers, toes, ears and nose
so do your best to keep them all
warm and dry.
When exercising, our bodies
use energy and produce heat at
When exercising outdoors, dress for the cold weather. And always bring
an extra pair of socks and gloves in case yours get wet.
an increased rate. These actions
occur at the cellular level. These
cells function best when they are
adequately hydrated and have
a readily available fuel supply.
To assist our body’s production
of heat, we can drink plenty of
non-caffeinated fluids before
and during exercise. Also, eat
a light snack before exercising
in the cold. It is best to avoid
drinking alcoholic beverages
when exercising outdoors as it
impairs the ability to feel the onset
of frostbite. It also works as a
vasodilator, which opens the blood
vessels, and in cool weather can
lower your body temperature.
Lastly, listen to your body for
signs that it might be time to go
in and get warmed up. Move
indoors if you are shivering, if
your coordination becomes worse,
or if you are feeling tired. As with
any exercise program always
All programming and services of the MS Society are offered in a barrier-free facility
begin slowly and try to set small
attainable goals for yourselves.
Wishing you all a wonderful New
Year full of winter outings.
