I am delighted to welcome to the National University of Ireland Maynooth all
involved in the international conference Thanatos as Muse? Schubert and
Concepts of Late Style. The conference is one of the most significant international
musicological conferences held in Ireland to date, with 72 papers from 13
countries over three stimulating days focused on analysis, reappraisal and
performance of Schubert‟s late music. This conference would not have happened
without the energy and enthusiasm of Lorraine Byrne Bodley and her colleagues
in NUI Maynooth, University College Dublin and DIT Conservatory of Music and
Drama, and the support of those generous in their sponsorship of the event. The
conference is an intense weekend of scholarly activity, and I wish you every
success in your hard work, so that when finished and in reflective mood, the
following words from Die schöne Müllerin might be appropriate: “Und da sitz ich
in der großen Runde, In der stillen kühlen Feierstunde, Und der Meister spricht zu
allen: Euer Werk hat mir gefallen;”
Prof. Philip Nolan,
President, NUI Maynooth
It is a great pleasure to welcome all of you participating in the Thanatos as Muse?
Schubert and Concepts of Late Style conference at Maynooth. To have so many
renowned Schubert experts and musicological experts in Maynooth is a privilege
indeed. National University of Ireland, Maynooth prides itself on the quality and
compass of its scholarship which has spanned the Arts and Humanities, Social
sciences, and natural and technological sciences for over 200 years, but love and
appreciation of music occupies a very special place for Maynooth and Ireland. The
multifaceted presentations at this meeting embracing, for example, the medical
realities of ageing and mortality, are emblematic of the cross-disciplinary
approach to scholarship which this university embraces. I wish all participants
every enjoyment and intellectual satisfaction, sufficient to keep this dark muse at
bay, at least for a while.
Professor Ray O‟Neill
Vice President for Research, NUI Maynooth
It is with great pleasure that the Music Department hosts this international
conference and on behalf of all my colleagues I extend a warm welcome to
delegates, performers and visitors. This three-day programme is testimony to the
vibrancy of Schubert studies and promises much in its wide-ranging and
challenging raft of keynotes, papers and masterclasses and final concert. The
Music Department is a thriving community of musicologists, performers,
composers and music technologists. Schubert and Concepts of Late Style is a
conference whose committee is chaired by our colleague, Dr Lorraine Byrne
