At the University of Applied Sciences

Düsseldorf, a group of professors of the

Departments of Electrical Engineering,

Mechanical and Process Engineering,

founded an interdisciplinary institute

for product- and production-related R&D

projects called FMDauto.

The available laboratory infrastructure

of the whole university, equipped

with modern technology, as well as the

usage of state-of the- art simulation and

experimental techniques, create ideal

conditions for successful research. Most

of the R&D-projects take place in partnership

with industry and other research



In addition to specific industrial development

and research projects, further

projects are planned or in progress:

At present, research and development

projects with a value of around 500,000€

are performed by FMDauto.

• Test and measurement systems for quality assurance

• Development of supply and assembly technology

• Development of measurement devices for the prediction of structure-borne sounds

• Strain measurements in hazardous areas and high voltage systems with the help of optical FBG sensors

• Motion and body detection by radar and ultrasonic sensors

• Processing facilities of continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastics

• FEM simulations to determine thermo-mechanical material properties forms

• Life cycle cost analysis

• Material flow optimization models

• Productization of industrial services

Currently 8 professors, 25 research assistants

and several student assistants are

working at the institute.

Available tools for simulation at the

laboratories of FMDauto are:

• Finite Element Analysis (ANSYS, Pro / Mechanica, Simufact, LSDyna)

• Fluid Dynamics (CFX)

• Mechanical Simulation (Matlab, SimMechanics, SAM)

• Regulation- and Control Technology (Simulink, WinFact, Boris, LabView)

• CAD (Pro / Engineer, Inventor, I-DEAS)

• Several Handling Simulation Programs

With our own laboratory equipment,

tests regarding the following aspects can

• Non-Contact 2D Strain Measurement

Several experimental materials exist for

the development of experiment- and test

facilities as well as for feeder and handling

technologies. We are also equipped

with adjustable actuators and industrial

image processing.

assembly equipment and measuring devices as well as

a CAD / CAM laboratory enable investigations, developments
