Healing Power of Art 

Philanthropists Give Works to Art in Medicine Program 

Jean Kislak believes in the power of art to heal people. 

“I think colors of paintings and their visual aspect can 

psychologically uplift people who have been in the 

hospital,” she says. 

A former art curator, she and her husband, Jay, 

donated 49 works of art to Cleveland Clinic’s Art in 

Medicine Program, which displays donated artwork 

at Cleveland Clinic facilities to inspire and uplift 

patients and families, as well as employees and 

the community. 

Collection Cheers Patients, Visitors 

The Kislaks’ offering is coined “The Art of Giving” and 

is part of a corporate art collection initially acquired for 

various Kislak businesses including the Kislak National 

Bank, which is now part of Banco Popular. Purchased 

between the mid-1970s and early 1980s, this artwork 

hung for many years in bank and corporate offices 

and public areas. 

“It gives us a great deal of pleasure to share art with 

patients at Cleveland Clinic. We hope it will help 

people feel positive,” Mrs. Kislak says. 

Honoring Dr. Brian Griffin 

A range of subjects, including brightly colored 

landscapes, skies and oceans are represented 

in the pieces, as well as explorations featuring 

mathematical symbols, geometric shapes and 

even robots. 

The collection was donated in honor of Brian 

Griffin, M.D., Cardiovascular Medicine, 

Cleveland Clinic. 

“Dr. Griffin has encouraged and helped us tremendously. 

He is an inspiration to me,” Mrs. Kislak says. 

Thoughtful Selection 

In their home community of Miami, Fla., the Kislaks 

pursued an earlier project at a burn center at Jackson 

Memorial Hospital, where Mrs. Kislak placed works 

of art. 

“We had to be very careful,” Mrs. Kislak says. “In 

hanging art in certain rooms, we had to be sure the 

materials in the pieces did not contaminate the room 

or cause risks for infection. 

“It was extremely important to look at the subject 

matter of each piece, as well as the colors used. 

Green and yellow seemed to best help people feel 

better,” she says. 

Art: A Passion and Pastime 

Mrs. Kislak says she became interested in art at 

age 5 when her mother took her to the Cleveland 

Museum of Natural History. 

“I wanted to take home an ancient Egyptian cat 

sculpture, which I found fascinating. Maybe that’s 

the collector’s instinct,” she says, laughing. 

Mr. Kislak shares her passion. When he moved to 

Miami, Fla., as a young man, he began exploring the 

early history of his new home state. Attracted first to 

maps and rare books, he began amassing a comprehensive 

collection reflecting the cultures and history 

of early Florida, the Caribbean and Mesoamerica. 

In 2004, they donated more than 4,000 of these 

books, maps, manuscripts and objects, forming the 

Jay I. Kislak Collection at the Library of Congress. 

The Kislaks enjoy uncovering the history of the pieces 

they collect, from a trumpet once owned by Louis 

Armstrong to Chinese Tang dynasty horse sculptures. 

“You learn a lot about history if you research 

individual items. It’s a continuing quest because 

it always takes you somewhere new. Collecting 

encompasses many aspects of enjoyment for us, 

and we hope patients will find enjoyment, too,”

A Family Passion for 

Philanthropy Charlotte Kramer’s $1 Million Gift Benefits Heart and Vascular Institute 

A $1 million gift from Charlotte Kramer honors the 

memory of her brother, Mr. Leighton A. Rosenthal, 

and his wife, Honey, and will support Cleveland 

Clinic’s Heart and Vascular Institute. 

As a former patient, Mr. Rosenthal was treated at 

Cleveland Clinic by Mehdi Razavi, M.D., a cardiologist, 

William Ruschhaupt, M.D., a vascular specialist, and 

Floyd D. Loop, M.D., a cardiothoracic surgeon and 

formerly Cleveland Clinic’s CEO and Chairman. 

Fondly Remembered 

Improving treatments for heart patients was important 

to Mr. Rosenthal and to his wife, who were loyal 

supporters of Cleveland Clinic, and a fitting tribute 

to their memory. 

“Leighton had so many interests, so many friends, and 

such a delightful sense of humor that I always looked 

forward to being with him,” Mrs. Kramer recalls. 

Legacy of Generosity 

Philanthropic vision spans multiple generations of the 

Rosenthal family. Mrs. Kramer is one of the founders 

of The Samuel Rosenthal Foundation, established in 

1959. The foundation supports various causes, 

including the arts and education. 

“My father was an extremely charitable man,” 

Mrs. Kramer says. “I certainly learned from him, 

and my brother [Leighton] did too. He taught us 

that no matter how busy you are, you’ve got to 

have time to help the world.” 

Mrs. Kramer’s generous gift is part of a $3 million 

family gift to the Heart and Vascular Institute from 

the Leighton A. Rosenthal Family Foundation, given 

by Mr. and Mrs. Rosenthal’s two daughters, Cynthia 

Boardman of Chestnut Hill, Mass., and Jane Horvitz, 

of Shaker Heights, Ohio. 

Honoring Community Supporters 

Mr. Rosenthal, who passed away in 2003, was 

the Chief Executive Officer of Work Wear Corp., 

a Cleveland-based manufacturer of work clothing 

founded by his father. 

“My father taught us that no matter how 

busy you are, you’ve got to have time 

to help the world.” Charlotte Kramer 

The late Leighton A. Rosenthal and his sister Charlotte Kramer. 

Mrs. Rosenthal passed on in December 2005. She 

had been on the Women’s Committee of the Cleveland 

Orchestra, volunteered at the Goodrich-Gannett Neighborhood 

Center, and was on the Board of the Western 

Reserve Historical Society.


Autism Support Expands 

Response to Fastest Growing Developmental Disability 

As a child with autism, 4-year-old Jaxon Buerge, 

struggled to connect with others. His mother, Trisha 

Buerge says the best way she could describe him was 

“lost” before he came to the Center for Autism at 

Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital Shaker Campus. 

“He could not communicate verbally. He couldn’t play 

appropriately. He just cried all day long,” she says. 

Since he came to Cleveland Clinic, Jaxon has made 

steady progress. He said his first word more than a 

year ago and is now enrolled at a typical preschool. 

“He is coming out of his shell more every day. 

He is learning and exploring the world around him. 

Ultimately, he has been given a chance at life. As 

a parent, this is an indescribable feeling. It’s just 

a miracle,” Mrs. Buerge says. 

Growing Problem 

Today, autism is the nation’s fastest growing developmental 

disability, affecting one of every 150 live 

births. Autism affects the brain’s functioning and can 

impair children’s learning, reasoning, behavior, social 

interaction and communication. Children with autism 

can appear indifferent to their surroundings and lack 

interest in toys and other children, and often resist 

physical affection. 

According to Delos M. Cosgrove, M.D., CEO and 

President of Cleveland Clinic, “Despite all the progress 

that has been made, too many children are not 

getting the professional care, support and attention 

they deserve.” 

Intensive Approach to Needs 

To address the special needs of children with autism, 

from infants to young adults, Cleveland Clinic’s Center 

for Autism employs a range of specialists, including 

psychologists, speech pathologists and behavior 

therapists, who consult with physicians to provide 

intensive individualized treatment and schooling. 

The results are dramatic, with younger children often 

graduating to preschool with few if any perceived 

signs of autism. 

Leslie Sinclair, Program Director for the Center for 

Autism, has been part of the program since its 

inception. She and her staff work tirelessly each day 

to help children with autism become more connected 

to the world around them. 

She and staff members offer training and consultation 

to families, school districts and community agencies 

and they regularly collaborate with researchers to 

gain a better understanding of the causes and 

effective treatments. 

The groundbreaking for the Debra Ann November Autism Wing and dedication of the Lerner School took place 

on October 20, 2006 as a tribute to the many friends who donated to help enlarge the Center for Autism. 


To help children with autism, specialists at the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Autism provide intense, individualized 

treatment and schooling. Results are dramatic, with younger children often graduating from preschool with few, 

if any, perceived signs of autism. 

Mrs. Lerner, who chose to support the Center for 

Autism after touring the current facility with her 

daughter, Nancy, says, “Ultimately I think we all 

strive to make this a better life for everyone.” 

While Cleveland Clinic’s approach is successful, 

because of limited capacity, some families have 

waited more than three years to enroll their children 

at Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Autism. 

Expansion Underway 

In response to the need for expansion, many friends 

stepped forward to help enlarge the Center for Autism, 

which will school 100 children with autism: 

• Morton and Iris November, Robert and Darlene 

Duvin, the Sherwick Fund of The Cleveland 

Foundation and others made possible the 

construction of the new wing, named the 

Debra Ann November Autism Wing. The 

Groundbreaking celebration for the new wing 

and the dedication of the Lerner School for 

Autism took place last October. 

• Norma Lerner and her daughter, Nancy Fisher, 

have generously fulfilled construction and 

programmatic needs, such as employing 

staff, supporting tuition assistance programs 

and funding operational needs of the 

Lerner School. 

• Through The Harold C. Schott Family Assistance 

Fund, the H.C.S. Foundation established an 

endowed fund to offer tuition support to families 

with children in the school. 

• Many others have donated to help increase 

capacity, allowing more children with 

autism and their families to benefit from 

specialized schooling. 

Dedicated to a Worthy Cause 

Mr. and Mrs. November named the new wing after 

Mr. November’s daughter, Debra Ann November, a 

devoted teacher. 

“She loved children. This would have brought 

tears of joy to her eyes,” Mr. November said at 

the groundbreaking and dedication.


A Granddaughter’s 

Care Inspires 

Cleveland Clinic Pediatric Neurologist A. David 

Rothner, M.D., knows how to put children at ease. 

He often dons a tie splashed with bright colors 

or cartoon characters and gives a stethoscope to 

young patients so they can check his heartbeat 

while he listens to theirs. 

Carol and Jack Weller noticed his warmth and 

compassion as he treated their granddaughter, 

Amanda Mendonca, for childhood seizures. They 

often accompanied Amanda on her visits and were 

grateful for her comfort with Dr. Rothner. 

“He really cares about kids, and I think a doctor 

who loves what he does makes a world of difference,” 

Mrs. Weller says. 

Dr. Rothner’s work inspires in many ways. At age 

13, Amanda has taken the role of doctor to heart, 

with hopes of becoming an obstetrician someday. 

Seeking New, Effective Treatments 

Out of appreciation for Dr. Rothner’s care and a 

desire to further his research, the Wellers made a 

Carol and Jack Weller, with granddaughter 

Amanda Mendonca.

generous contribution. Dr. Rothner seeks to discover 

new, effective treatments for children with a variety 

of pediatric neurological disorders. 

“It just makes sense to share when you have been 

blessed. We want to help children with any kind of 

neurological problem. We know that many kids and 

their families struggle,” Mrs. Weller says. 

Satisfying Family Care 

Mr. Weller, Vice Chairman and CEO of Liberty Steel 

Products, a family-owned steel service center in North 

Jackson, Ohio, says he could not be happier with the 

care his family has received at Cleveland Clinic. He 

visits Cleveland Clinic cardiologist Wael Jaber, M.D., 

regularly for check-ups to monitor his heart. 

“I think Cleveland Clinic is an excellent hospital,” he 

says. “They always make us feel comfortable and we 

believe in the work they do. It’s important to give back 

something that you have earned in your life to people 

who need it,” he says. 


Channeling Heartbreak to Help Others 

Chase Family Supports Nurse Education at the Harry R. Horvitz Center for Palliative Medicine 

Two high school sweethearts laid together on their backyard deck 

one summer evening, surrounded by wooded acres. It was a night 

George Chase will never forget. His wife of more than 40 years 

peacefully surrendered to cancer in his arms. 

Angels of Care 

A devoted wife and mother, astute business woman 

and generous grandmother of four, Carol Ann Chase 

lived her 62 years to the fullest, embracing each day 

until pancreatic cancer took her life in 2006. 

Years after a successful battle with ovarian cancer, 

Cleveland Clinic physicians discovered a new cancer 

growth that had developed in her pancreas. After 

a diagnosis by Peter Rose, M.D., Section Head, 

Cleveland Clinic Gynecologic Oncology, Mrs. Chase 

was admitted to the Harry R. Horvitz Center for 

Palliative Medicine. 

Here she had access to the holistic treatment 

of body, mind and spirit that defi nes palliative 

medicine, a medical approach tailored for patients 

with life-threatening illness. At the Horvitz 

Center, the focus shifts to controlling symptoms 

and complications of disease when a cure is elusive. 

Caregivers managed complications and maintained 

quality of life during her remaining days. The family 

soon described the individuals who cared for 

Mrs. Chase as “angels of care.” 

Mr. Chase says, “Carol’s dignity and humility 

was constantly maintained.” Daughter Cheryl 

Chase-Charmichael agrees. “No one ever 

dehumanized Mom.”

Team Carol 

Coined “Team Carol,” family members rotated visits 

during Mrs. Chase’s two-week stay at the Harry R. 

Horvitz Center. Doctors and nurses embraced the 

presence of this loving family, referring to them by 

name, allowing them to bring snacks for Mrs. Chase, 

all while making certain her comfort was a priority. 

“Team Carol” continued to energize Mrs. Chase 

during her fi nal days at home. 

The Palliative Care team arranged for Mrs. Chase’s 

medical equipment needs, allowing her to spend the 

last days surrounded by family, in the comfort of her 

sunroom. She asked family that no one cry for her as 

she accepted her illness. 

Renewed Connection 

The disease renewed the Chase family’s connections, 

and together they channeled their heartbreak to 

helping others. 

“It’s sometimes referred to as the ‘gift of cancer,’ 

because it brings families together in unexpected 

ways,” Ms. Chase-Charmichael says. 

Mr. Chase, his daughter Cheryl, and two sons, George 

and Michael, committed $25,000 to Cleveland Clinic’s 

Palliative Care unit in gratitude for the efforts the 

“angels of care” extended to their wife and mother. 

With their gift, Mr. Chase and his family created the 

Carol Ann Chase Palliative Medicine Fund, which will 

fund palliative care education for nurses. Given as a 

tribute to Mrs. Chase, it honors all she did as a wife 

and mother.

Nursing Defi nes a Life 

Former Nursing Director Lois Hann Supports Hillcrest Hospital 

When a severely injured patient came through the emergency room doors, Lois Hann, 

known for her diligence and caring, was the nurse doctors called. 

In a Pennsylvania hospital, she once cared for a young postal worker, hit by a car and 

so badly injured that doctors could not set his bones. Mrs. Hann packed his arms and 

legs in pillows; she bathed him and gave him medicine each day for two months. He 

asked to see her as soon as he was discharged to thank her. 

“It was a great joy to see that young man smiling, coming out of that hospital in a 

wheelchair,” Mrs. Hann says. “When you see someone get better, you say to yourself, 

‘Wow, I had a hand in that.’” 

Thankful for Career Opportunities 

Experiences such as this and the opportunity 

to advance made nursing rewarding, 

Mrs. Hann says. Nursing made it 

possible for her to live independently in 

the 1950s, after she was widowed at age 

26 with a three-year-old son. Her 30-year 

career began with her post as a school 

nurse and concluded at Hillcrest hospital, 

a Cleveland Clinic hospital, where she was 

Director of Nursing. 

“Nursing saved my life when I was left 

alone at a young age. My son and my career 

were my whole life, and I feel that 

nursing has been very good to me,” Mrs. 

Hann says. 

She enjoyed the challenges as her role 

broadened in various nursing positions in 

different hospitals. 

“Nursing isn’t just changing bandages and 

emptying bed pans. There is so much 

more to it, especially as I got into administration 

and had to keep continuing my education. 

Things kept changing and the 

nursing fi eld broadened. I enjoyed it all 

and I think nursing is truly the greatest 

profession,” she says. 

In appreciation for her career opportunities, 

Mrs. Hann recently made a planned 

gift of a charitable remainder unitrust to 

benefi t Hillcrest hospital. 

“I wanted to give back. I told myself years 

ago I would support Hillcrest hospital 

when I was able. It feels really good to 

give to a place that has given me so 

much,” she says. 

Mrs. Lois Hann Long-time Connection 

Mrs. Hann’s connection to Hillcrest hospital 

is longstanding. From her role as Director 

of Nursing in the early 1970s, she remembers Hillcrest as a small, bustling place, 

where she knew all the physician heads personally. 

As a smaller hospital, the facility experienced overcrowding, particularly in the intensive 

care unit. In response, Mrs. Hann created a step-down unit for intensive care 

patients who were doing better but not quite well enough for regular care. 

Besides spearheading innovations in patient care, Mrs. Hann held high standards for 

nurses she managed, including crisp white uniforms and careful adherence to policies 

ensuring excellent care. She had come up through the ranks and believed it was 

important to mentor younger nurses. 

After retiring, Mrs. Hann continued as a volunteer at Hillcrest hospital for 10 years, 

scheduling and preparing patients for treatment. 


A Gospel of Health Links Aids Diabetes Education through Area Churches 

Make the Link! Diabetes Awareness Sunday took 

place January 14, 2007 to reach communities 

where diabetes is prevalent. 

One recent Sunday morning, guest speakers visited a dozen Cleveland-area churches and 

offered more than 2,000 people an unexpected message: a gospel of good health. 

Standing at pulpits in places of worship throughout the community, presenters from 

the Links Inc., a not-for-profi t women’s organization with a mission to enhance life 

in African-American communities, spoke to congregants about prevention, warning 

signs and healthcare services available for people with diabetes. 

The event, called Make the Link! Diabetes Awareness Sunday, took place January 

14, 2007 to reach communities in Cleveland and East Cleveland with large 

populations of African-Americans and prevalent diabetes. According to 

the American Diabetes Association, approximately 2.7 million, or more than 

11 percent, of all African-Americans 20 years or older have the condition – and 

one-third do not know it. 

Grant Allows for Community Education 

To raise awareness, the Links Foundation, Inc., gave a generous $10,000 grant to 

the Lennon Diabetes Center of Huron Hospital, a Cleveland Clinic hospital, to fund 

educational literature creation and volunteer speaker training by health professionals 

at Huron hospital, where patients with diabetes constitute about 40 percent of all 

admissions. Two Cleveland-based Links chapters participated. 

Dispelling Myths 

Myths about diabetes persist, and the seriousness of the condition tends to be 

minimized, says Deborah Plummer, Ph.D., President of the Western Reserve 

Chapter of Links and Executive Director, Offi ce of Diversity, Cleveland Clinic. She 

spoke at several churches. 

“People were surprised to learn that a change in eating habits or exercise could 

have such a profound effect. For that reason, education is a vital tool in preventing 

diabetes,” Dr. Plummer says. 

Many people do not realize that diabetes is associated with high blood pressure, 

cholesterol, heart disease and stroke, she adds. 

“People will say, ‘Oh, I just have a touch of sugar.’ But no one has a touch of sugar. 

That’s what I told them at the churches, that it’s like being a little pregnant.” 

She says she was overwhelmed by the interest and response of the churchgoers 

with whom she spoke. 

“People were surprised to learn that a change in eating habits or exercise could have such a profound effect.

Brentwood Foundation Supports 

Osteopathic Medicine 

South Pointe Hospital Benefits from Charitable Foundation’s Mission 

Terri Kovach, Director of Brentwood Foundation, 

believes that advancing the practice of osteopathic 

medicine with its holistic approach to healthcare 

can help people in communities stay healthier. 

“We seek opportunities to carry out our mission 

of promoting good care by preventing illness and 

promoting wellness through osteopathic medicine,” 

Ms. Kovach says.

Training Tomorrow’s D.O.s 

One way the Brentwood Foundation fosters the 

practice of osteopathic medicine is through support 

of South Pointe Hospital, a Cleveland Clinic hospital, 

which trains more than 60 D.O.s annually. 

Recently, Brentwood Foundation designated 

$828,000 to benefit the hospital’s Center of 

Excellence in the Theodore F. Classen Medical 

Education Center, named after the founder of 

the foundation, Theodore Classen, D.O. His son, 

Roger Classen, D.O., currently serves as the 

Brentwood Foundation’s president. 

Staff members at the Education Center focus on 

enhancing the hospital’s medical education program 

through clinical and basic research, faculty development 

and recruitment, and expansion of Brentwood 

Foundation’s assets to support medical education. 

Longtime Partnership 

Since its founding in 1994, Brentwood Foundation 

has allocated $14 million to benefit South Pointe’s 

osteopathic medical education program. 

The foundation also supports a mobile unit of South 

Pointe Hospital medical teams, who travel to the

In 2006 alone, the Brentwood Foundation approved 

grants totaling nearly $1,125,000 to support:

Fred M. DeGrandis Named CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic Regional Hospitals 

Fred M. DeGrandis was recently named CEO and 

President of Cleveland Clinic’s regional hospitals. 

He came to Cleveland Clinic four years ago, serving 

as CEO of the Western Region, including Fairview, 

Lutheran and Lakewood hospitals. 

“It is with tremendous enthusiasm that I take on this 

new role to further integrate the Cleveland Clinic 

regional hospitals,” Mr. DeGrandis says. 

When Euclid Hospital opened its doors, the 

headline of the January 25, 1953, edition of the 

Cleveland Plain Dealer Pictorial Magazine read: 

“My, How Hospitals have Changed!” Built in 1952 

as Euclid-Glenville Hospital to meet increasing 

eastern suburb demand, the lakeside hospital was 

colorful and featured nontraditional interiors. Built 

without long white hallways, Euclid-Glenville 

was designed to look and feel more like home. 

Recently, to meet growing community demands, 

The Lincoln Electric Company made a contribution 

to help expand and renovate the Emergency Department 

at Euclid Hospital. They and many generous 

supporters helped increase Euclid Hospital’s capacity 

from 24,000 to 32,500 patient visits a year with a 

total $4.8 million expansion. The Emergency Department 

doubled in size with the expansion to 12,500 

square feet with 22 new, private patient care areas.

Specializing in the manufacture of arc welding and 

cutting equipment, Lincoln Electric built its world 

headquarters and manufacturing operations in 

Cleveland the same year Euclid Hospital opened. 

The Lincoln Electric Foundation soon followed, 

becoming a cornerstone of corporate philanthropy. 

Lincoln Electric management has served on 

Euclid Hospital’s board and actively serves with 

the hospital’s community advisory council, and 

many of the company’s employees and their families 

receive healthcare at Euclid Hospital.


Joyful Giving Sets 

a Worthy Example 

Uhrmans Pledge $1 Million to Heart and Vascular Institute 

Some kids open a lemonade stand, or they run 

a newspaper route. When they were young, 

the Uhrman’s children, Seth, Tracie and Mindi, 

instead hosted back yard carnivals featuring ring 

toss games and balloon target challenges – and 

donated their proceeds to cancer research. 

The children had only to look to their parents, Hal 

and Ronna Uhrman, as philanthropy role models, 

particularly in support of healthcare. 

Helping Heart Patients 

The Uhrmans, who reside in Hunting Valley, Ohio, 

as well as Boca Raton, Fla., say it’s important to 

help hospitals. 

To assist expansion of the Cleveland Clinic Heart 

and Vascular Institute in the Sydell and Arnold Miller 

Family Pavilion, Mr. and Mrs. Uhrman gave a generous 

$1 million gift. The completed facility will increase the 

capacity to treat patients at the main campus by 

nearly 50 percent. 

Mr. Uhrman says, “The problems of cancer and 

heart disease, in particular, are close to our hearts, 

and we both wanted to do something for Cleveland 

Clinic with impact today.” 

Mr. Uhrman is CEO of State Industrial Products, a 

manufacturer of cleaning and sanitation products. 

Mrs. Uhrman’s family started the business in 1911. 

Today, the Company employs more than 1,100 people 

nationwide. Their son, Seth, is the fi fth generation 

to be employed by the company. 

Linked Through Friendship 

The Uhrman’s connection to Cleveland Clinic began 

with a close friend, Ronald J. Ross, M.D., FACR, 

Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Euclid, Hillcrest, 

Huron and South Pointe Hospitals, a member of 

the Executive and Development Committees of the 

Board of Trustees of Cleveland Clinic and an Executive 

Vice Chair of the Today’s Innovations, Tomorrow’s 

Healthcare campaign. 

Over the years, Dr. Ross discussed attributes of 

Cleveland Clinic and the positive impact Cleveland 

Clinic has made in other people’s lives. 

“Dr. Ross told us how Cleveland Clinic physicians 

successfully performed heart surgery on his 3-monthold 

grandson, who is now a healthy and very active 

3 1/2 year old. He really inspired us,” says Mrs. 

Uhrman, who was the boy’s fi rst teacher when he 

was 2 years old.

The Uhrmans’ passion for Cleveland Clinic is closely 

tied to a commitment to the community.

gift at Palm Springs event 

A pink desert sky rimmed by mocha mountains 

inspired a relaxed air for innovations in Healthcare, an 

exclusive opportunity for the Palm Springs, Calif., 

community to become acquainted with Cleveland 

Clinic, on February 20, 2007. Tom and Sharon 

Coughlin, new members of the Taussig Cancer Center 

Leadership Board, graciously hosted an evening 

reception at the Reserve Club in Palm Springs, Calif. 

Nearly 100 local residents and Midwest snowbirds 

attended an evening of casual conversation and 

special presentations. 

Frank Rudy surprised the group when he presented a 

$1 million gift to Taussig Cancer Center Chairman 

Derek Raghavan, M.D., Ph.D., for pioneering translational 

cancer research. Dr. Raghavan expressed his 

thanks to Frank and Margie Rudy for their family’s 

ongoing support and admirable philanthropic example. 

Impressed by what they heard at the event, Mr. and 

Mrs. Rudy later increased their gift to $1.5 million.

From engaging in discussion of the latest treatments to 

considering the impact of leadership philanthropy, 

such as that of Colleen and John Lance, guests were

event at the Palm Beach County Convention 

Center in West Palm Beach, Fla., on March 15, 2007. 

Delos M. Cosgrove, M.D., CEO and President, shared 

exciting news of Colleen and John Lance’s gift of 

$500,000 to Cleveland Clinic in Florida, bringing their 

total giving to $1 million. Mr. and Mrs. Lance expressed 

their gratitude for a lifetime of expert care. 

The event’s educational seminars focused on cancer, 

digestive diseases, heart disease, neurological 

disorders, orthopaedics and urology. These interactive 

sessions with nearly 20 Cleveland Clinic specialists 

explored the causes of disease, prevention, and new 

therapies and treatment options.

Margaret Krupa’s $6 Million Gift to 

Florida Announced 

On March 14, 2007, more than 200 guests of 

Campaign Honorary Chair Sydell Miller gathered at the 

Breakers Hotel & Resort in Palm Beach, Fla., to learn 

about the campaign for Cleveland Clinic and its impact 

on healthcare in South Florida. 

Margaret Krupa modestly accepted a standing ovation 

when Cleveland Clinic in Florida CEO Bernardo 

Fernandez, Jr., M.D., announced her recent gift in 

excess of $6 million to Cleveland Clinic in Florida, 

bringing her family foundation’s total support to more 

than $16 million. 

Delos M. Cosgrove, M.D., CEO and President, also 

shared highlights from 2006, which from patient 

volume to research funding, was a banner year for 

the entire Cleveland Clinic. (see pages 16-19). He 

highlighted growth opportunities from Abu Dhabi to 

Seattle and South Florida, including the purchase of 

the Weston Hospital. And, many joined in his excitement 

about the new Health and Wellness Center that 

opened in West Palm Beach in February.

Relations and Development 

Carol L. Moss was recently appointed Chairman, 

Institutional Relations and Development, by Cleveland 

Clinic CEO and President Delos M. Cosgrove, M.D. 

Ms. Moss, who joined Cleveland Clinic in 2002, 

comes uniquely qualified for this position, having 

served prior as Acting Chairman, Institutional 

Development; Vice Chairman, Institutional 

Development; and Executive Director, Campaign 

for Cleveland Clinic. 

In her new role, Ms. Moss will oversee all of Cleveland 

Clinic’s philanthropic initiatives and capital campaigns, 

a key component of the health system’s physical 

expansion and continued medical advancement. 

Dr. Cosgrove says, “Philanthropy and development 

are the engines making it possible for us to further 

patient care, research and education. Carol Moss, 

with her depth of experience and talent, will 

strongly position Cleveland Clinic for continued 

growth and development.” 

Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic, Ms. Moss was 

Assistant Vice President for University Development at 

The Ohio State University. She also held development 

positions at Case Western Reserve University, 

University of Pittsburgh and Slippery Rock University.

a $1.25 billion campaign to further patient
