1. Purpose and Context for the School
The Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine was established in 2006 with the
Cooperative Agreement in Veterinary Medicine between the University of Nebraska –
Lincoln and the College of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa State University. The program
provides Nebraska resident students the opportunity to obtain a high quality and
affordable education in veterinary medicine that leads to the Doctor of Veterinary
Medicine degree. The program also focuses on building relationships between the
students and veterinary community in Nebraska and encourages students to locate and
work in Nebraska once they have completed their DVM degrees. To accomplish these
objectives it is crucial that we effectively communicate the purpose and mission of the
program to gain the support of the citizens of the state, the veterinary community, state
government and the NU academic community. It is our belief that the title of “School”
effectively communicates a purpose and mission within our society and this is
particularly true within the professional community of Veterinary Medicine. It
communicates a sense of validity, respect and authority--elements that are vital to the
success of the program.
This proposal is to establish the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences
which would be comprised of the existing Department of Veterinary and Biomedical
Sciences, the Veterinary Diagnostic Center, the Great Plains Veterinary Education Center
(GPVEC) and the Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine. The departments of
