Plaisir De Merle
Plaisir de Merle was originally granted
to the Marais family of French Huguenot
descent in 1693. Situated on the slopes
of the Simonsberg Mountain, between
Paarl and Franschhoek, Plaisir de Merle
is a rare gem. This 974 hectare estate in
Simondium, Paarl, has earned international
acclaim for its white and red wines. About
400 hectares are planted with a variety of
noble grape cultivars such as Chardonnay,
Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz
and Malbec.

Vibrant red colour with spice and cherries on
the nose. Lots of red berry fruit on the palate
with a creamy oak finish and soft tannins that
ensure drinkability. Although very drinkable,
this wine will benefit from further ageing
for another three to five years. This wine
is adaptable enough to stand up to spicy
Mexican, Cajun, Indian or Italian fare.
Rietvallei
Rietvallei Wine Estate, a family-owned
estate in the Klaas Voogds ward, eight
kilometres east of Robertson, features on
the Nederburg Auction for the first time.
The farm was bought in 1864 by Alewyn
Burger for his son, Jacobus Francois. Koos
Burger then farmed the estate and was
70 years old when he planted a Muscadel
vineyard, the oldest of its kind in South
Africa. Today, the fifth and sixth generations
of the Burger family, Johnny and his son
Kobus, manage the estate.

This wine is full-bodied, rich, yet gentle.
A floral bouquet comes through on the
nose, with typical raisiny sweetness and an
intense flavour that lingers on the palate
and follows through on the aftertaste while
the acidity complements and balances the
sweetness. Additional bottle maturation gives
excellent results. Enjoy as an apéritif or as a
winter warmer in front of the fireplace on a
chilly evening. Serve at room temperature
(18 degrees Celsius).

This is a full-bodied wine with a deep,
almost black colour. Lots of red and black
fruit flavours infused with cherry, cassis and
hints of coffee on the nose. These flavours
follow through on the palate together with
blackcurrant and dark chocolate, ending with
a noticeable toastiness, a touch of vanilla and
soft juicy tannins. Pair with roast beef, leg of
lamb or any other red meats, and pasta.
