They may not be aware ofwhat is offered here before they send their children to fouryear
colleges.
• HCC board wants to build a stronger relationship with the public school board.
• Rouse SCholars is a strong program and helpful in getting students to attend HCC.
• HCC needs to keep abreast and stay involved in the latest welfare reform issues. We are
currently working with the department of social services (DSS) through the continuing
education department and HCC has drafted "Jobs First" program ofDSS to train
welfare recipients.
• Technology contains the jobs of the future. Community colleges should play an
important role - day care centers are important in keeping students in school.
• B. Kittleman asked what was happening with the information they had received several
years ago about developmental math and reading courses: there has been a drop in the
number ofstudents requiring developmental reading; math rates have remained constant
(the reason appears to be that students didn't take the courses in high school that would
give them the background to pass the entrance exam); HCC has a high success rate for
getting students through.
