Highlights from the last twelve months
and what to expect in the year ahead

Welcome to our Annual Review
and thank you
Welcome to CILIP’s first Annual Review, which includes highlights from the last
twelve months and what you can expect in the year ahead.
First of all I would like to thank you for your continuing support. Without your
membership and without many of you giving your time and energy to get
involved, we couldn’t have achieved any of this.
It’s been an incredibly busy twelve months. In 2010 a big consultation exercise
with members and non-members about the future of the profession and CILIP
called Defining Our Professional Future led us to create a new organisation
structure and new Vision and Mission to make sure we are focused on members’
priorities. Since 2010 we have continued carrying out research and changing
what we do and how we do it; to make sure that CILIP is the best professional
body it can be.
We know that professional recognition, skills development and Continuous
Professional Development are at the heart of what we offer. That is why we have
revised the Professional Knowledge and Skills Base; a map of the skills required
to work in this sector and a valuable self-assessment tool. Over the next twelve
months you will see this tool develop into a useful, interactive app.
Over the last year we have increased our advocacy activities and grown our
media profile on your behalf. We are improving our communications, refreshing
our website, reviewing how we can most effectively work with regional branches
and special interest groups. We are working to introduce a Virtual Learning
Environment, focusing on the policy priority areas that matter most to members,
we have introduced online renewal and will soon introduce online joining.
A lot has changed and there are many more innovations and improvements to
come. I hope you enjoy our Annual Review.
HIGHLIGHTS from the past year
It’s been an incredibly busy year for CILIP. Sadly we
can’t fit everything in, but here are some highlights
from the last year…
CILIP took a lead role
supporting National
Libraries Day. Over
400 events across the
UK and overseas took
place celebrating all
types of libraries, staff,
users and supporters.
The new-look Libraries All Party Parliamentary Group was launched. It is a
useful way for CILIP to engage with MPs and Lords about a variety of library and
information issues and provides opportunities for discussions and debates. The
group has over 65 members and growing.
CILIP reaffirmed its commitment to Information Literacy.
A new Information Literacy special interest group was created
and CILIP supported the Alexandria Proclamation – which
states that Information Literacy and lifelong learning are basic
human rights.
CILIP CEO
Annie Mauger gave
evidence to the Westminster
government’s Culture, Media
and Sport Inquiry into library
closures. In his evidence
Libraries Minister Ed Vaizey
committed to meeting with
Annie about the role of
library staff.
Community Services and
Diversity groups merged
to form the Community,
Diversity and Equality
special interest group.
Colleges of Further and
Higher Education and
University, College and
Research groups merged
to form the Academic and
Research Libraries Group.
Social media expert Phil
Bradley was elected
President. He later agreed
to serve for an extra year
to see through a review of
CILIP governance.
For the first time ever the CILIP Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Children’s
Book Awards went to the same book, A Monster Calls written by Patrick
Ness and illustrated by Jim Kay. Over 90,000 children in over 4,400 reading
groups shadowed the awards in library-based reading groups and posted
over 14,500 reviews.
CILIP Cymru Wales and
CILIP in Scotland hosted
two hugely successful
conferences focusing on
leadership, learning and
digital participation.
CILIP launched
a new campaign
encouraging
everybody to Shout
About School Libraries.
The campaign will run
well into 2013. Having
already met with key decisionmakers
including the Department
for Education and Ofsted, we are
working hard to advocate the
positive impact a good school
and school librarian can have
on a child’s life chances. Visit
www.schoollibraries.org for
more information and to
get involved.
CILIP advocated for faster
copyright reform and published
guidelines for members about the
implications of the Digital
Economy Act.
CILIP Mentor
of the Year award
was launched. The award
celebrates the great work done by some of the
amazing un-sung heroes of the library and
information profession. It will toast those who
give their time and knowledge to help others
develop and grow.
Over 100 new professionals, students and
graduate trainees came to CILIP’s New
Professionals Day to find out more about
starting out and progressing in the library
and information profession.
Some things we couldn’t fit in: Music and song writing initiative
from Skipton won the 21st CILIP Libraries Change Lives Award.
CILIP surveyed public library authorities, the results were widely
quoted in the press and Parliament. Annie Mauger addressed
the Westminster Education Forum about key role librarians
play improving children’s life chances. Former President Biddy
Fisher received an OBE. ACLIP was recognised by the Scottish
Credit and Qualifications Framework. CILIP staff went ‘back to
the floor’ and each spent a day shadowing a member at work.
For the first time CILIP’s Big Day and AGM took place outside
London – in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. CILIP Cymru Wales held
a special Love Your Library event with the Women’s Institute
at the Welsh Assembly. Hundreds of events took place across
the country organised by CILIP, CILIP in Wales, CILIP in Ireland,
CILIP in Scotland, regional branches and special interest groups.
FINANCES
The major organisational restructure in 2011 not only refocused CILIP on
what members told us they wanted, it also streamlined activities and cut our
cost base dramatically. In a tough economic climate, income was down on
2010 by £780,000 but we made savings of £865,000 by closing loss-making
enterprises, reducing staff costs and generally becoming a more efficient
operation. This was demonstrated by our end of year operational results
which showed a surplus of nearly £110,000 against a deficit of almost
£500,000 in 2010.
Total income for central operations
in 2011 was £4,162,000, made up of:
Total expenditure on central
operations in 2011 was
£4,693,000. The pie chart
shows our continuing
emphasis on strengthening
advocacy for the professions
One of CILIP’s
key business plan
objectives is to
become a more
sustainable
organisation and
we continue
towards this in
